Saw this performance, and later, saw the repeat at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City later in the year. At the arrowhead stadium performance, John spent 2 minutes bitching about the insects in America in the late summer. He also pointed out the sport-bottles on his mic-stand were peach brandy and white wine. Wish I could go back again. I can never get enough.
One of my personal favorite Entwistle songs, and I f***ing love the 8-string bass.
The '89 tour might not have been a universal favorite, but it had some great versions of some excellent songs, and a lot of humorous stage banter as well. :)
Wow, that's great! I find it funny how usually, when a song is not sung by the lead singer of the band, the live version is (like most of the songs Roger Taylor and Brian May sang in Queen). For The Who, it was the other way 'round haha.
This is a great song and got a lot of airplay for years after it's release. It's a shame it has fallen into obscurity through time and being overshadowed by the Who's many bigger hits. I specifically searched for it but truth be told most people had no idea what the title of the song was when it was getting airplay. Thanks for posting, I saw them on this tour and this brings back great memories.
@TheTzdope yeah, this is when i first saw them live. too young to even see them on the 1st farewell tour in 82. or any tour with Moon. I refuse to see another legendary rock group or artist past the age of 40. Unless it's Jeff beck. all he has to do is play guitar and he always is on the top of his game no matter how old he gets.
I saw the Oakland show from this tour. At the preceding show Pete had windmilled his whammy bar straight through the palm of his hand. That earns him the "Highest of Fives." All day on the radio the big question was - Will Pete Windmill Tonight?! He did.
Later at this show Pete had his whammy bar Lodged Through The Middle Of His Hand! Only aN eXTREMELY Talented Microsurgeon being Nearby by happenstance Saved Pete's Windmiller to go on and fight another day.
@Fradonotgiveafunk He Played Acoustic for The First 40-45 Min(TOMMY). And Would Throw On RED/WHite Clapton Strat During (E.g.) My Wife And /or Won't Get Fooled Again.
On his doctor's directive, Pete had to give up the electric guitar on this tour. Also Entwistle was forced to turn down his bass, which was compensated for by employing an army of musicians on stage.
Pete didn't "give up" the electric guitar. He still played plenty of electric on this tour. And I don't think his hearing was why he started playing so much acoustic guitar. When he did play electric, he had his amp running through a direct box, so there were no speakers on his side of the stage, and hence, there should have been a problem relating to his hearing. I think it had more to do with divesting himself of the image he created during the 70's and early 80's.
defitnetly their worst tour...This was not The Who..it was a polished big band...people who think it was a good tour never understood what the who is all about...
The 1989 Tour was still the best of the four Who shows I have seen with Quadrophenia 1997 in close second. Then in 2002 and 2006. I was at what was then known as Sullivan Stadium (later Foxboro Stadium) in Foxboro, MA for The Who on July 14, 1989. The Who played for three hours with no opening act and opened with half of Tommy, some Who's Next, a lot of older singles and some later material plus some solo tunes from Pete. I agree that Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle stole the show IMHO!
I saw the big guy perform at a club in Toronto in May'ish 1989 with the guys from Prism, a huge Canadian band at the time. They played Prism songs but also every John Entwistle song of The Who. It was great but still missing Pete, Roger and of course, Keith. Still, the big guy could put out .... large! I miss him deeply.
In fact, Pete Townshend revealed on Rockline in July of 1989 to Bob Coburn after a caller asked Pete if he would work with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd again and his response was yes and also his first choice for lead guitarist on the 1989 Who Tour was Gilmour but Gilmour was in the midst of a European Tour with Pink Floyd for the Delicate Sound of Thunder album. I got to see The Who in 1989 at the old Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, MA and was the first concert I ever went to. They did this tune.
You might mean Jody Linscott on percussion, she's collaborated with Simon Phillips on many projects. However it was Simon who really propelled this tour into orbit with his power and versatility.
I was at this gig! This was my first WHO concert..AMAZING! The show opened with 'A FRIEND IS A FRIEND' from Pete's 'IRON MAN' album and a cool animated bit with it. At the end of the gig, Pete pierced his hand with his red FENDER STRAT...They rushed him to the hospital...Roger carried on for two more tunes!
Saw them on this tour in Oakland on August 29th and although it was good I felt somewhat disappointed. Pete played acoustic too much and they overdid it with the horn section. I know Pete's hearing problem was the reason he didn't play much lead on this tour and I like his acoustic playing but I didn't want to see him play acoustic for the majority of the show. Roger and John were in top form but Pete and the horn section were a bummer, just my opinion.

Whoa! For a second, I thought how similar Entwistle's voice sounded to Daltrey's - then I realized Daltrey must be singing unison.
