  • My favourite song by the Who

  • John's over the top bass playing and Pete's "less is more" guitar chops were a perfect match!

  • Happy birthday to The Ox, John Entwistle.

  • I miss John

  • Saw this performance, and later, saw the repeat at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City later in the year. At the arrowhead stadium performance, John spent 2 minutes bitching about the insects in America in the late summer. He also pointed out the sport-bottles on his mic-stand were peach brandy and white wine. Wish I could go back again. I can never get enough.

  • One of my personal favorite Entwistle songs, and I f***ing love the 8-string bass.

The '89 tour might not have been a universal favorite, but it had some great versions of some excellent songs, and a lot of humorous stage banter as well. :)

  • HUGE disappointment. I was certain he was writing another song about his ice-queen wife. Or was he anyways...

  • The guy with the electric guitar is a bit of a knob, isn't he?

  • John died doing what he loved: coke and whores.

  • @adamtzsch oh my god. well put. thats john.

  • Wow, that's great! I find it funny how usually, when a song is not sung by the lead singer of the band, the live version is (like most of the songs Roger Taylor and Brian May sang in Queen). For The Who, it was the other way 'round haha.

  • Roger sings the vocals on the original Who Are You version. Daltrey's voice had more gusto too.

  • Roger sings the vocals on the original Who Are You version.

  • This is a great song and got a lot of airplay for years after it's release. It's a shame it has fallen into obscurity through time and being overshadowed by the Who's many bigger hits. I specifically searched for it but truth be told most people had no idea what the title of the song was when it was getting airplay. Thanks for posting, I saw them on this tour and this brings back great memories.

  • Thanks for sharing! I am privileged to have seen The Ox perform live with The Who in '96 at the United Center in Chicago!

  • prostitute hahah

john was a very funny guy, miss him

  • appy birthday Ox. Gone but not forgotten

  • Whoa! For a second, I thought how similar Entwistle's voice sounded to Daltrey's - then I realized Daltrey must be singing unison.

  • i hated this tour!!

  • @TheTzdope yeah, this is when i first saw them live. too young to even see them on the 1st farewell tour in 82. or any tour with Moon. I refuse to see another legendary rock group or artist past the age of 40. Unless it's Jeff beck. all he has to do is play guitar and he always is on the top of his game no matter how old he gets.

  • I saw the Oakland show from this tour. At the preceding show Pete had windmilled his whammy bar straight through the palm of his hand. That earns him the "Highest of Fives." All day on the radio the big question was - Will Pete Windmill Tonight?! He did.

  • I surprised this doesn't have more hits, this song is great.

  • Eight-String Warwick Buzzard!

  • One of the best groups ever, and a great song.

  • Dartley took it easy and sang it while sitting ,lol

  • This does not even sound like The Who, this tour was LAME

  • @kpax45 Even a "lame" Who tour is better than anybody else.

  • @kpax45 i hear you brother!!

  • This makes me want an 8-string Buzzard

  • Wow. I was at this show. Simon Philips - one of the best rock and roll drumming displays I have ever seen live.

  • @Twotontessie

    Moon poops all over him

  • @SH3L70N - Moon inspired me to play drums and I love him. That has nothing to do with how awesome Simon Philips played on this tour.

  • Later at this show Pete had his whammy bar Lodged Through The Middle Of His Hand! Only aN eXTREMELY Talented Microsurgeon being Nearby by happenstance Saved Pete's Windmiller to go on and fight another day.

  • @Longetty But...he's playing an acoustic?

  • @Fradonotgiveafunk He Played Acoustic for The First 40-45 Min(TOMMY). And Would Throw On RED/WHite Clapton Strat During (E.g.) My Wife And /or Won't Get Fooled Again.

  • awesome song by a awesome band.

  • On his doctor's directive, Pete had to give up the electric guitar on this tour. Also Entwistle was forced to turn down his bass, which was compensated for by employing an army of musicians on stage.

  • Pete didn't "give up" the electric guitar. He still played plenty of electric on this tour. And I don't think his hearing was why he started playing so much acoustic guitar. When he did play electric, he had his amp running through a direct box, so there were no speakers on his side of the stage, and hence, there should have been a problem relating to his hearing. I think it had more to do with divesting himself of the image he created during the 70's and early 80's.

  • Simon Phillips on Fire!...simply the best!

  • @adrummer469

Moon shits on Simon by miles and miles

  • Simon Phillips kicks Zak Starky's ass on playing the drums! It's too bad they didn't recruit him again for the Super Bowl Gig!

  • @MrBigwanker

    you on crack

  • their worst tour! Townshend on only accoustic! Those clown backup singers!

bolton and phillips rounding out the band!

  • defitnetly their worst tour...This was not The Who..it was a polished big band...people who think it was a good tour never understood what the who is all about...

  • @TheTzdope

This is the tour where Pete speared his hand on the whammy bar while windmilling. And as you can see, acoustics don't have one. ;)

  • The 1989 Tour was still the best of the four Who shows I have seen with Quadrophenia 1997 in close second. Then in 2002 and 2006. I was at what was then known as Sullivan Stadium (later Foxboro Stadium) in Foxboro, MA for The Who on July 14, 1989. The Who played for three hours with no opening act and opened with half of Tommy, some Who's Next, a lot of older singles and some later material plus some solo tunes from Pete. I agree that Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle stole the show IMHO!

  • I saw the big guy perform at a club in Toronto in May'ish 1989 with the guys from Prism, a huge Canadian band at the time. They played Prism songs but also every John Entwistle song of The Who. It was great but still missing Pete, Roger and of course, Keith. Still, the big guy could put out .... large! I miss him deeply.

  • moneys lyin on the floor she looks at me shakes her head n sighs out of time out the door red shining in my eyes..

  • been there, done that.

  • 8-string basses rule!

  • The Who, the band of my life

  • 2:27 who is he? some good tone eh?

not simon petes bro i know...is it?

  • Its Steve "Boltz" Bolton

  • why do i not think that was gatorade john was sipping on out of that bottle

  • One was red wine and the other was white.

  • I love and want that bass...

  • We al do...

  • this isnt really the who unless pete townshends playing lead.

  • who is the guy on guitar

  • Steve Bolton

  • In fact, Pete Townshend revealed on Rockline in July of 1989 to Bob Coburn after a caller asked Pete if he would work with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd again and his response was yes and also his first choice for lead guitarist on the 1989 Who Tour was Gilmour but Gilmour was in the midst of a European Tour with Pink Floyd for the Delicate Sound of Thunder album. I got to see The Who in 1989 at the old Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, MA and was the first concert I ever went to. They did this tune.

  • John was a pretty good solo artist as well, this is a great song

  • did steve bolton wear the same outfit for every show on this tour?

  • Who's the SweetHeart on the drums?

  • Simon Phillips

  • You might mean Jody Linscott on percussion, she's collaborated with Simon Phillips on many projects. However it was Simon who really propelled this tour into orbit with his power and versatility.

  • Great song, great John Entwistle

  • I was at this gig! This was my first WHO concert..AMAZING! The show opened with 'A FRIEND IS A FRIEND' from Pete's 'IRON MAN' album and a cool animated bit with it. At the end of the gig, Pete pierced his hand with his red FENDER STRAT...They rushed him to the hospital...Roger carried on for two more tunes!

    LONG LIVE ROCK!!

  • Saw them on this tour in Oakland on August 29th and although it was good I felt somewhat disappointed. Pete played acoustic too much and they overdid it with the horn section. I know Pete's hearing problem was the reason he didn't play much lead on this tour and I like his acoustic playing but I didn't want to see him play acoustic for the majority of the show. Roger and John were in top form but Pete and the horn section were a bummer, just my opinion.

  • sweet

  • john was mesmerizing with the sound on this songs bass lines plus he wrote some great songs this being one

  • The best, rip john

  • This tour was incredible.Everyone was on top of their game and there were no pretenses of being a power trio (by say hiding a keyboard player on the side of the stage). In Phila, Pete introduced each back up musician and said, "I'd like you to think of all of us as 'The Who'"

  • I should've seen it.

  • as much as i love petes acoustical style i wouldve liked a pete townshend solo much better...

  • shit hes playing an 8 string buzzard ive never seen of video of trick of the light... great song... the ox sounding good...
