“That is the amazing thing for me. Ayrton watched all of that, saw it all first-hand, holding my crash helmet and possibly watching me die from a crash. He watched all the needles and syringes and the tracheotomy. Then he went back to his garage, put his helmet back on, visor down, and with just 10 minutes left, did the fastest lap of Jerez ever of that track.”
That is taking the car by the scruff of the neck and kicking it's ass. I've seen Vettel hit laps that were as kinetic and laserlike, but he never has to deal with manual stick shifts and gets a help from electronics. Just incredible. RIP Senna.
I dont even watch F1 anymore - watch a few races a year just "for old times sake" - but not much - why would you - when you used to watch this every week? - spellbinding, pulverizing Senna magnificence!
aryton seemed to rely on his downshifts to assist is braking moreso than Alain Probst (?) did. Alain used his but, in my opinion, not as much as Senna did. But then again, I am sure aerodynamics play a large part in the reasons as well.
Is this video flipped? as in a mirror? He passed those two guys on the LEFT side of them when they showed this clip on Top Gear for Senna's tribute...I just notcied that.
@DeAdiSSu3 If it was flipped the "Honda" on the steering wheel would be backwards and so would the "Nacional" on his helmet. Can't flip a video but keep the text the right way.
I have seen one video of part 1 of the Top Gear thing that was flipped however.
Just listen from 35 to 40 seconds in, through the 2 corners and how ridiculously fast he is on the throttle, on and off constantly, pushing to get a faster exit. no one else could drive that lap like that, he is the best driver of all time, without doubt !!
Yes, today's drivers get manual sequential gearboxes and piddly V8's.
But since you don't know, I'll tell you:
Television coverage began to integrate onboard cameras with magnetic and liquid image stabilization in late 1995/early 1996. It looks smooth these days, but it isn't. Even the newer tracks have a their fair share of uneven surfacing and off-camber corner entries and exits. You just don't see it because of the fancy onboard cameras used to make things more "viewer friendly".
.....thnx for telling me but who gives a shit about image stabilization?,,,,the guy is keeping a screaming 3.5l V12 on track single handed changing gears faster than a seq gearbox....look how smooth it looks the same lap from Prost's onboard...it's not image stabilization its not viewing angle, it's just the way he is fighting,
all you need to see is him come off the last corner, punch the gas, oversteer then correct, and not lose accelleration all in about a tenth of a second... fucking spectacular!
I stopped watching F1 the day he died. But i do miss the sounds of those screaming engines. Oh, and for those who may think that today's drivers are better... think again... Ayrton was driving a manual shift, not XBOX-like buttons like today's F1 cars. ;)
Turn 15 (second to last) is just plain scary! Flat out with no run off at all. The last race in '97 had a chicane in place. Not too many tracks have the fast corners like Jerez does. Too bad,
Senna had very distinctive throttle control, you can hear him aggressively opening the throttle during the downshift (heel-toe), and then jabbing at it very early through the corner. This lap is just awesome.
Find the video of Berger in the second car doing his quali at Herez and you can see the difference between these 2 drivers. Senna is faster because he is smoother. He makes it look effortless.
yes, the crash happened in that corner, without gravel or tyre walls to soften the accident, this is why afterwards there was a chicane in use there for car racing, not motor bikes though.
Prost had just done a quick lap in quali, I think pole, Senna responded with this lap and got pole back.
At 0:35 in the vid there are two cars going extremely slowly, actually the 2nd car was on the racing line and tacked in behind the other at the last moment.
Watching Senna fly past without lifting and aborting the lap was distressing to put it this way.

Schumacher may be the most sucessful F1 driver ever.Prost may have been the biggest gentleman to ever grace F1 and the all round complete driver (IMHO) however in the end only one person could do a lap like that. Senna will forever,in my view, remain as the most commited and "pleasurable" driver to watch..

Ayrton's flying lap is so intense that everytime I watch at it I go with my head taking each curve as if I was there, lol. It's like entering into another dimension, like being in a tunnel in which you don't know if the light at the end is the sunshine or a train that goes directly to you. What is amazing is that in 65 out of 161 times, it was the sunshine, not the train. No way: seeing his job on Qualy obligates to a rest to bring my adrenaline back! Obrigado Ayrton, I miss you so much buddy...
HeHe, nope1 Impossible to imagine such a brilliant downshifting!!!. His downshifting is so close to perfection that not even an automatic gearbox would do it better!!!. Anyway if you forget about listen the video but just watch at it, it would be the same: the way Ayrton control the sliding of the car is really unbelievable... no other driver could do it that way, not even other "sliding" kings as Mansell or Rosberg. Simply impossible to believe (if not for the video!!!). GREAT AYRTON!!!
Amazingly Jeepy, the other "lap of the day" there in Jerez 90 was Prost lap, with just a totally different style as always: a smooth and clean line, "easy" I'd say. I really love to see those guys that day in Jerez, with their 180º opposite way of driving and still being almost as fast (I guess Ayrton got the pole by about 2/10 or something similar). It's a pity nowadays cars don't allow us see how different driving styles can be: bot current drivers seem to be almost all the same, lol......

For being the new Prost He should have his counterpart (Senna). I want to be honest: even with Hamilton being a good talent, a counterpart of Alain or Ayrton's calibre didn't appeared yet... And believe me, that's a big difference... very big in fact...
You talk about the young people who never saw Senna, I started watching F1 in 2005! I never even really got to see Schumacher! My hopes are riding with Lewis Hamilton.
Magic in action, how he overtakes the car's ! Yes Newyankee a typic Senna back slip out at 1.20 ! And a great spec of the honda, lot of power and what a sound motor, a monster! the HONDA golden age !
What the young viewers don't seem to understand here is that Senna is manually doing everything in the cockpit, and at lightning speed, all a blur and very precise, no mistakes, the all time master at work.
One good way anyone can see how Senna was superior is to compare another video, search Berger onboard jerez90. In the same session, same car/track, Berger being no slouch, there's a big difference between them. This video clearly demonstrates that Senna was a supernatural driver, on a seperate level, gifted to his toenails. He is amongst few supernaturals like Clark, Gilles Villeneuve, Moss.
Totally amazing lap this one, the makes the car go faster than it should and how he passed those back markers, it was like they wern't even there. Also the manual gear changing, makes the ingredients to a freak of nature.
Unreal, you can see that Senna was almost not of this earth, the absolute master of them all at work. And, after seeing this video, people dare tell me that Schumacher is the best.........My ass.
Prost and Piquet disliked this..

Simply the best, along with Gilles Villeneuve, we will not see another like him, once in a lifetime.

unfortunetly no, you are right .
Rest in peace master.

What the young viewers don't seem to understand here is that Senna is manually doing everything in the cockpit, and at lightning speed, all a blur and very precise, no mistakes, the all time master at work.
lazerpod66 3 years ago
I'd say....those who started watching F1 after the year 2000.
There's a reason Senna is an absolute F1 legend!

Even Schumacher when he manually shifted was not even close to Senna, I feel sorry for the young people who never saw Senna in action, a pitty.

This was the 50th pole of his career in just over 100 races, most of which were entered in inferior equipment.

1.20 watch the back slip out!

Damn Ayron, this is bonkers. Leave some skill for the rest of us.

Pause at 0:33 and think of what you would do... then restart the video and watch: pure adrenaline work by the great Arton Senna.

OMG, THE BEST FORMULA 1 DRIVER OF ALL TIME, RIGHT THERE!!!
Ayrton Senna showing what he was made of, absolutely fantastic lap, at the limit!
Formula 1 should go back to the stick shift, to make the drivers work harder or simply just for the beauty of it.
Ayrton Senna Forever!!!
