  • An amazing performance by an amazing woman!

  • i don't know what to say...beautiful

  • I'm a bit gutted she didn't belt it out right at the end, but she did a beautiful interpretation of the song. I never tire of listening to Ruthie's voice.

  • Fantastic!

  • She's all kinds of amazing.

  • This was when this DOMESTIC STARLET HAS-BEEN still had a career.

  • this is who im auditioning for in our school play!! hahah love this song<33333

  • there are 3 musical theatre actresses that will always blow me away

    1. Patti LuPone

    2. Lea Salonga

    3. Ruthie Hensahll

each are so different but never fail to amaze!

  • i need to combine her innocence and Jodie's (girl who won the andrew loid-webbers tv show) passion.. no pressure there then >.<

  • i cant hear her

  • @Animeprincess711 you're missing out :L lol

  • I Was in this play!~!!!! i was nancy 2!!! i didn't do nearly as good....... i was also annie in Annie. 'when im stuck with a day thats gray, and loney! i just stick up my chin and grin and say........the sun'll come out tommorrow.......' hahahahahaha =) <3

  • Ruthie is the best. I worked FoH during the 90s Palladium run, and not only was she the best, she was utterly adorable in person too :) MISS YA, RUTHIE!

  • I love Ruthie for Ruthie and I love Judy for Judy .. Yes it's natural to compare but I give credit where it's due and both ladies have their own style and stage presence .. It would be a boring world if everyone sounded the same .. I admire every singer as themselves ...

  • I was lucky enough to meet Ruthie on a train earlier this year! She is lovely!!

  • what key is this in?

  • myyyyyyyyy woooord! her acting skills are INCREDIBLE!! I want those! haha

  • she was amazing....but why do the last 2 to last notes in head voice..... kinda spoilt it. :(

  • @unidan82 Sorry, but the last note was in chest.

  • @jjaus

Sorry, I meant the 2 high notes.

  • @unidan82 Yes. Considering it was only a C and D, she should have had the puff to belt it, but I wonder how much she had already sung that day.

  • Yes truly an amazing voice but she comes in 3rd for women I love to hear sing this song. The ultimate version can be found on the OBC and Original London Cast Albums. That sing is the late, great Georgia Brown. The second person that can belt out this song is the late, great Judy Garland. Not shabby company at all for Ms. Henshall.

  • Out of all the renditions i've seen of this song, this is the best. She's a wonderful actress and singer.

  • She is such an incredible performer. I adore her so much. What a smoldering, wonderful performance.

  • A great version, better than Shani Wallace and that is saying something. I'd put this as second only to Judy Garland's version. A great video and a great voice.

  • To Windgrace:

Ruthie has had a career a lot bigger and more varied than any of the artists you have mentioned. She was also ( a few years ago ) voted theatre goers favourite musical actress beating Elaine Paige. Therefore she is and, will still be considered a great in musical theatre. Don't compare, just enjoy.

  • It's such a shame that I don't think she will ever be considered one of Broadway/West Ends greats along with such lofty names as Elaine Paige, Patti LuPone or even Bernadette Peters considering the fact that Ruthie is immensely talented. Not only is she gorgeous but her voice is stunning and her ability to express emotion in both her voice and face is astounding.

  • I wish she hadn't sped it up, but other than that, it's fabulous.

  • Royal Festival Hall

    RUTHIE HENSHALL

    Sounds of Hollywood

    Sunday 31 October 2010

  • Ruthie, Kerry, and any woman who has played this role have had to be able to do so much, and I admire them all. They all have played signature roles it seems.

  • She should be playing it in london. so much better than jodie or kerry.

  • @callumgriffiths1

She did play it in London, in it's last run. She plays it different to Kerry yes, but to say better... im not sure, she plays a more mature Nancy and more softer, i think the character was adapted for the new run. Kerry is magnifique, as it the divine miss Henshall!

  • finally! she didn't sing through her teeth! haha, annoys the hell outta me when she does that. a great performance.

  • Please please watch my video of me singing this ! "Sorcha Fenlon" into the search box and there you'll find it ! I really would appreciate honest comments and of course constructive criticism is always welcome ! Thank You :)

  • amazing

  • the way she sings this, looks like shes really thinking or singing to someone she knows, great acting :)

  • Ruthie has an amazing voice, she is a legend in my opinion :) Her emotion is this song is so powerful, I think many people would love to have a voice like hers.

  • JAZMINE SULLIVAN...NUFF SED

  • thats because SuBO looks like a bag of a spanners yet sings like a a bag of average talent. This bird got a voice but ironically her OK looks (as in not looking like shes been literally battered by old Bill, dunked in the Thames then hurled on stage) is stopping her from getting that 'where the fuck did that come from' factor. shame...shes alright...I'm not sure why i'm even commenting mind as my fav singers are MJ and Paul Rodgers, dont rate any women singers really...

  • I am soo bored of watching Ruthie videos on youtube and immediately seeing some sort of debate about Susan Boyle. Literally, everyone just shhh. Eugh

  • omg i saw oliver last night with kerry ellis in it !! she is absolutely amazing i loved her in wicked and wwry but she is incredible in oliver !!

  • Ruth has a beautiful voice and a great actress :)

  • I've never seen Oliver live. Well, that's a lie. I've actually seen Oliver live, but not like this. Cause it was a school production and my sister was in it. She wasn't Nancy, but she was a little orphan =]

  • @RosesNightengales You have got to go and see it in London!! The current revival is amazing and Kerry Ellis is supposed to be super as Nancy!! Go on & see it!!

  • This song always makes me so sad. Makes me think she's basically brainwashed. She knows what a horrible man Bill is but is choosing to stick by him (even after he's beaten her) just because she has nothing else going for her.

  • @AnImmovableObject

Sadly its a fact of life that many women (and some men) face every day of their lives.

  • i love her

  • Ruthie is so great!

  • she is a gift...

few even come close to her.

    I love her too.

  • I love Ruthie!

  • although many famous people have performed this song over the last few years, she sounds the best with her accent and expression in her voice!! :P

    Amazing Ruth x

  • Anyone ever felt like this, really?

  • @TheChemicalHeart I certainly hope not, because if they feel just like Nancy, then they're probably being beaten, and will be killed by their worthless boyfriends in the future!

  • henshall has a lovely voice, but be sure to listen to judy garland's version...you feel heart pangs and drama of the situation through the inflections of her delivery.

  • I've listened to Garland's version and agree that she also did a tremendous job with the song. Ruthie just blows me away (with the right tune -- where she gets to open up those golden pipes) but I certainly don't take umbrage when someone's preferences are for a GREAT singer like Garland. In fact, I often find find myself debating with all the Susan Boyle trolls, thinking that if you're gonna tell me anyone did a tune better than this woman, you better be menioning names like Judy or Lupone.

  • I love this woman!!!x x

  • When you get this high in the stratosphere of artist, comparisons become subjective. There is world-class and there is not. To my ear, Ruthie MIGHT be the best female singer I have ever heard; Patti Lupone MIGHT be the greatest overall performer I have ever experienced. both so damned different (Ruthie the more classic singer; Patti a quasi Rocker/Broadway/Back seat blaster. Meanwhile SueBo (an adequate to good singer) is selling a million CDs. A shame more don't realize what true greatness is.

  • @zalman595 I agree with everything you have just said!

  • Thanks for your reply. I tend to comment a lot on videos (being an opinionated sort and a music-lover) and I often get a lot of negative feedback questioning my intelligence (the "idiot" gambit) and the legitimacy of the circumstances surrounding my birth ;) I find myself commenting on Ruthie so often because it galls me that she is not a household name who is more widely exposed to people who need to hear more of the real thing.

  • @zalman595 Excellent comment. Your DNA will survive as the trash is being removed.

  • @zalman595 i agree with the whole "you can't really judge" thing, but seriously? patti is the classically trained vocalist. ruthie is the one who rock belts.

  • @broadwaybrent367 I called Patti a quasi-rocker based on some early recordings on here where she belts the living Hell out of a song while many of us were thinking "what the hell is she saying?" Remember, Lupone (justifiably) took a lot of criticism earlier in her career for her slovenly pronunciation. Then again Lupone has that pure power voice where you think she is going to ignite on the stage sometimes. Ruthie, on the other hand, has that gorgeous clarity and elocution

  • she is the best, beauty, power, talent, she is what a singer should be, she sets the bar few can match, very few, not many... one maybe 2... and that is being nice.

  • i cant wait for kerry ellis to sing this song

  • @operastar1994 no me either!!

  • Ruthie is just a killer when she does songs like this, where her power and emotion just slowly sneak up on you -- building slowly, opening up in the middle of the tune and leading a strong instrumental ensemble in to a powerful, climactic finale. Her renditons of "I dreamed a dream" and "Maybe this time" are similar in that way. What a singer.

  • I Love Ruthie ! She's got such an amazing voice :D <3

Kerry Ellis is apparently going to be Nancy as of March 29th 2010 ! I think she'll be amazing ! :)

  • omg! she is! now i've got to go see oliver again :D lol

  • shes hot...lol

  • wow this almost sounds like opera lol

  • kerry ellis would be an excellent nancy...

  • she really would :D x

  • Ruthie=best singer EVER. :D

  • Ahh i didjt notice the teeth thing but now people mention it its all i notice - thanks guys!

  • Yes, is so boring hear about the teeth thing ALL the time. Is Her Style, her trademark. Period. A Ruthie fan from Lima - Perù

  • Don't know why people always moan about the teeth thing. She still soudns amazing! She's great singing this song <3

  • I love Ruthie! She's the best Nancy, Fantine, and Marguerite there will ever be! :)

and she's gorgeous as well :)

  • I wish she played Nancy through the whole thing! She's sooo good. <3 Ruthie.

  • the clenching of her teeth distracts me!

but otherwise i luv u ruthie henshall!

  • far out she is amazing. I'm Nancy in a production now, I would love to be able to do it half as well as she has

  • Love you ruthie

  • Who cares if she clenches when she sings. Listen to her sing. Everything she sings is incredible and she is just gorgeous.

  • Nancy's song is one of the best in OLIVER. As Long as he needs me and Where is Love? are abolute perfections.

  • i absolutely adore her

  • can some one tell me where i can find the karaoke version of this version of this song please need it fast !!!!

    thankyou

  • That was one of the better versions I've heard of that song. Very strong and expressive, sharp notes, too. Just wonderful.

  • Sweet, strong version. Great job... thanks for posting!

  • i love this movie!

  • She is such an inspiration. I think she is amazing.

  • Ruthie is a great performer and and even better singer!!!

  • she is so freakin beautiful!!! Wooo

  • does anybody know what happened to sonia swaby's rendition of that song ???

  • i dont know but sonia swaby was the best Nancy singer i've ever heard!!!

    maybe i'll find the mp3!

  • yes...Shani IS nancy, just as Ruthie IS fantine, different people have different interpretations on characters. And clenched teeth is a style of singing (something to do with control) my aunt was trained in thearetical performance and she sings the same.

  • I think it might be to do with opening up the muscles of the face, whilst controlling the vowel sound. I don't know though.

  • When she sings this song, It gives me chills! She's so talented!

  • I love Shani Wallis so much better sorry guys but u no she is still good!

  • Hmmm.... Shani Wallis is STILL better than this one. Ruthie is soooo close but Shani is better. Sorry guys! :D

  • I can't find a version with Shani Wallis....do you have a link?

  • yeah: search Oliver! (1968) pt.10/15 and once you clicked on it, go to 3:32, if you scroll down, I posted a comment which will take you directly to 3:32. Hope that helped!

  • Thanks!!

  • i wish that she would open her mouth more when she sings! it would sound so much nicer!!!

  • Ruthie would be a truly amazing Nancy!!!

She's also really good as Fantine in Les Miz :D

    I love you, Ruthieee

  • Although I'm satisfied having goose bumps listening to and watching this performance, maybe a little primer on heading and chesting notes would be illuminating. I don't notice her doing anything.

  • ur chest voice is used for lower notes (and more powerful notes), and ur head voice is used for higher notes - it generally sounds sweeter and softer. if u use ur chest voice for really high notes, it sounds kind of shouty. when u use ur head voice, its when the note resonates more in ur head (there are empty spaces in there somewhere)

there is more to it, but i am a singer (an amateur ^-^), so i only know how if feels (its really hard to explain)

  • Thank you for your explanation - kind of you to make the effort.

  • no problem :D

  • she would do great as elisabeth! I love her voice!! And she looks great.

  • I really like her as Nancy, she has the perfect voice for the part.

I don't think that the Nancy Dickens wrote in the novel would work in the musical. I don't think a 16/17 year old would have the power and emotion for a song like that.

  • You can't know that, some 16/17 year old people are more grown up. It is always possible.

  • She was awesome as Fantine in Marguerite and the 10th ann. of Les Miz concert...!! I admire her so much :D

  • She was Marguerite, in Marguerite, and Fantine in Les Mis :)

  • You mean chest the two highest notes. Its not hard to head voice anything!

  • She is one of the only people who can head voice the two highest notes in "As Long as He Needs Me" and still deliver one of the most powerful performances of the song I've ever heard. She's a perfect Nancy.

  • Knock it with the whole teeth thing lol She still sounds amazing! Ruthie is great here!

  • what a voice !!! She sings so well!!

  • *heart melting....*

who can resist this voracious-gorgeous lady!?!?!

  • Ruthie Henshall is actually amazing! <3 <3 <3

  • yeah it bugs me that she she sings thru her teeth....I want the sound, let the sounds out!!! she did this the whole song in "send in the clowns" on another clip from youtube, and it really bugged me. This performance was better tho.

  • god i love ruthie. she is so amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • I bet my grandson wishes he'd been 10 years older when he played 'Oliver' at the Palladium opposite Ruthie. He was only 12.Ah well, the right place, the wrong time.Lovely artist,I think he had a 'crush' on her. Thanks for posting.

  • wasn't she fatine in le mis?

  • Yeah she was. She also portrayed her in the Les Mis 10th Anniversary concert.

  • @michellethehawtie Yes. She was Fantine. Awesome, isn't she?

  • @michellethehawtie @michellethehawtie Yes. She was Fantine. Awesome, isn't she? On my simple opinion, she owns the most incredible voice of all

  • it really bothers me how most producers make british actors that come to New York mask their accent, I like it better with it.

  • Beautiful redition! Although it is hard to beat Shani Wallis'

heart-rending version from the movie.Kudos to the great Lionel Bart for such incredible songs! Nancy was already a somewhat sympathetic character. Bart did Dickens one better and made her loveable as well. When Bill Sykes hits her, and later murders her, you want to kill him also!

  • no matter what people say broadway is the hardest type of singing there is

these people sing, dance, act , belt everyday of the week and yet they dont get nearlly as much puplicity as the people who sing once and put it on a cd

really these people should be recongnized WAYWAYWAY more than rebular singers

  • so true. well said.

  • Yes. But it is all supply and demand. This is a fast food world. Fast food profit is much bigger and faster than the French chef.

  • Really, opera is the hardest type of singing there is, but Broadway isn't easy.

  • no opera singers again dont sing 2-3 hours a night for 8 shows a week plus they dont dance when they sing but opera is still hard

  • yeah she sings through her teeth alot but she is amazing

  • I need to sing this for my standard grade vocals :| Terrified of the high E !!

    (: x

  • aw i love this musical and she's so pretty ^^:D

  • wow! stunning. :) shes so beautiful aswell, you know she really suits dangly earings hahahahaha

  • she has a lovely long neck!

    i agree

  • We've just finished our performance of Oliver, which were 5 shows in 4 days. But in the last performance, our Nancy broke down crying after she finished singing this song. I nearly did too, it's just such an emotional song. Ruthie sings it amazingly. (is that even a word?)

  • It just looks so effortless when she sings, it's quite amazing

  • low e and high a

  • anyone know what key this is in?

    thanks

  • its actually in C, but I don't remember what the key change at the end is

  • Ruthie is so good. she looks so different than when she was doing chicago

  • i'm auditioning for this part in two days and i'm using this video for inspiration about every aspect of it!! wish me luck (i need it)!! ^_^"

  • Good luck! I'm currently Mr. Sowerberry in Oliver with one more week to go. Our Nancy is fantastic.

  • Very nice. The drunken undertaker, eh?

  • Check out Jessie Buckleys versions ist brill

  • when i heard this song in the movie when i was little it was kind of a slap in the face for my romantic side. this song speaks of loving someone who is downright cruel and tyrannical to her. And all through the song i wanted to shout, "NO! love doesn't have to be this way for you! he may need you but YOU don't need HIM!"...i'll still get teary eyed when i hear this song, cuz it's just so dag gone sad and beautiful! :*(

  • i like patti lupone's version better, but this is beautiful!

  • Just exquisite. The best version I have ever heard of this great song, including the great original by Georgia Brown. And Henshall shows such restraint. She can be the British Patti LuPone, full of excess but this is perfect.

  • wow

  • she is such an amazing singer!!

  • effortless. OMG!

  • what nationality is she? is she american?

  • No she's English... she's from bromley and she trained at Laine theatre arts in surrey!

  • i thought she was. but then i heard her put on an american accent and it was so convincing! :)

  • absolutely flawless.

  • i would love to see her play this role!

  • ruthie has ag great voice and a lovly person she kept me going wiht my dancing and acting

  • Ruthie is also the best Fantine ever- 10th anniversary, baby. She rocks. and she absolutely amazes and inspires me.

  • this woman is fabulous

  • yea i definatly had to sing this song. I was not as good as her tho, but hey i tried.

  • vocally and technically she is outstanding.....she is the best in the business at the moment and a nice lady also

  • Brilliant-- just breath-taking!!

    Wow!

  • amazing!

  • just WOW!

  • lovely mezzo voice!

  • Ruthie is amazing in EVERYTHING Marguerite is amazing (: xx

  • Jodie is now been chossen by you the public to play nancy in the west end i can not wait to go and see it
