So sad that Drake's words at the end of this video about making sure that the deal with Bushmaster would be best for everyone, "especially the American public", have been effectively spit on by Bushmaster's recent conduct. I truly hope they will eventually make THIS rifle, and live up to ours and Magpul's expectations.
I like this gun alot. Even if the army doesn't use it due to their liking of the fn scar hopefully the cops and feds will find a use for it. It would make a great swat rifle. I hope bushmaster comes out with a rifle in the 6.8 spc.
@alpha9mm Its not just the U.S. Army that doesn't use the Bushmaster, its the rest of the branches. BTW, only USSOCOM have been using the FNH SCAR, but only the heavy variant because USSOCOM officials didn't see the weapon to be "better" than the M4. The individual branch SOCOM commands may or may not buy the light version.
could someone explain to me what is the perpus of the agustable gas system? I am not 100% on that. Is it so that it can work well in could or whats goin on?
Milspecmonkey is correct but, I want to add that in inclement conditions (sand) or with fouling of the gas piston system (unlikely) the "more gas" setting gives more of a push to the bolt carrier. The FN-FAL, M-240, and M249 MG's had similar adjustable systems.
Im assuming they will offer numerous barrels all with this gas system. If you happen to use the 7.62x39mm (AK-47 round) in a third-world country the ammo you pick up off the battlefield may be inconsistent as far as powder charge goes. So having the ability to easily adjust your gas system might be very useful in those situations. Wouldnt it really piss Haji off if you can pick up his crappy ammo, use it in your own weapon AND get better performance out of it.
I love the design. Field strip look remarkably simple. Adjustability looks great, operates smoother because the charging handle is on the fore-end and you can use the bolt catch for faster reloading and It has various calibers so no mather which round the military decides to use it's a few cheap parts. Interchangable parts between varients is nice and here's the best part.. Made in America. What's not to like about this weapon?
vary interesting, i like the over-all layout of the controlls and the look of the weapon, but what does the gas-shut off do? would that make the weapon manualy-operated like cocking the bolt for each shot perhaps for a mission wear silenced weapons are needed and the racking of the action could be a problem? please explain.
I like the placement of the charging handle, much more stock options. One of the best features is the interchangeability of barrels, stocks, and calibers.
What I'm hating is the fixed stock appears to have no LOP adjustment. I'm in the Aussie army and we are looking at a new rifle (we currently use the Steyr A2). Either this or the SCAR are my picks in 6.8 and 7.62
Mate im in the midst of tranfering to airforce (ADGIE) and i think i can say that we both no that we aint going to get any new weapon anytime soon and from what i heard it was going to either be the m4 (but something was said about that we couldnt get the production rights) or the canadian version of the m16 well thats what i heard but yea proberly be 20 years before it comes i remember when i was at kapooka my secco said he wished we had of kept the SLR he said its better than the steyr lol
the bolt catch idea was taken from the xm8, not that im saying this gun is a copy, i just think its taking the best things of all the different rifles and put them all into 1. hope it will shoot 6.5 i know i rather use this in war then the 5.56 m5 or scar
The 7.62 is a much harder caliber to control in full auto, though, especially the NATO version of the round. That's the reason why the AK-47 have a lower hit rate than the M-16. It's a good caliber for a DMR. The 5.56 is really destructive, though, too. It can still kill whatever it hits.
im a big fan of magpul and the masada, but these improvements on our fighting rifle, like the 100 or so in the past ten years alone, draws attention to how little the ak variants have had to adapt in the past 60 years
Great looking weapon, Although the apparent choice to go with an non-removable pistol grip is... strange considering that Magpul is selling so many MIAD grips. Not being able to swap out your battle grip for a Hogue precision shooting grip is a small and unnecessary handicap, IMO.
The only thing I did not like about the Masada was the charging handle. The forward one is a nice improvement. This weapon should be sent to our troops in 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel or 6.5 MPC.
They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel. It's a 556 gun, and the AR family has an excellent trigger selection available. The idea of this gun was to blend the best of the G36, G3, M16, SCAR etc... into one modular rifle. They hit the mark and I hope this becomes standard issue.
Neat looking gun! So they moved the charging handle forward to avoid impeding the optic mounts along the receiver. Interesting. But I wonder, wouldn't the charging handle NOW impede attachments placed along the foregrip area like (entry light, laser pointer, etc.)?
I can all but promise you you'll have to buy them separately.
If I had to guess, the standard model would probably come with the railed handguards and the fixed stock, though I'm sure you'll be able to choose what you want when you're ordering.
The weapon is being released in may 2nd quarter 2008, april-june, and will be released in 5.56x45mm (M16 round), 7.62x39mm (AK round), 6.8x43mm SPC (In production, will not be with the initial release), and the Grendel round. Since its being produced with bushmaster they'll probably make a bushmaster .450 as well. MASADA IS HERE!!!!
do they make conversion kits for the XCR to turn into either 5.45 or 6.5? if not, and it still takes too long to order that, ima just say "fuck this" and roll with the masada in 6.5.
Probably not too well. Don't get me wrong, I favor this weapon over the SCAR, but the two weapons were not built for the same purpose. The ACR is focused on the civilian market, while the SCAR was built by request of SOCOM and is focused on the military market.
The ACR will probably never see any deployment but should be a far better civilian weapon. The way things are going the SCAR may not hit the civilian market for a couple years, it's already been delayed quite a bit.
Please put this weapon out ASAP, I would like to have one before the economy takes an absolute shit and things get really bad. While my dollars are worth something, id like to spend them on guns, bullets, and beans...so to speak :)
I'm continually surprised by the skill of Magpul. This gun looks amazing. Wish I had $1500 lying around so I could get one lol. Did anyone else notice his switchblade?
Sounds right. I was just telling someone the other day that a 6.5 Grendel barrel, a 5.56 lower and 7.62x39 bolt should be about it. Oh, and the barrel parts and 6.5 mag of course. I hope Magpul will consider making PMAGs for 6.5 soon.
But does the gas operation have the same problem as the M-16/M-4?
Or is it like the HK416 uses a proprietary gas system replacing the direct impingement gas system used by the standard M16/M4. The HK system uses a short-stroke piston driving an operating rod to force the bolt carrier to retract. This design prevents propellant gases from entering the weapon's interior, a traditional short-coming with direct gas impingement systems
1. Don't think so considering that you have to lock in the forward assist
2. Pretty sure you set it to have the charging handle on only one side and swap sides or have both.
3. Yes they still have a folding stock design.
4. Yes there is a battery storage compartment in the folding stock and I assume the same for the other stocks (probably larger compartments for the fixed ones)
5. Price has been said to be right around $1400US. I wouldn't expect that to change much, maybe as high as $1600 though
to the comment below me there dosent seem to be too many parts, ak47 is so reliable because all its parts are lose not just simple but lose parts sacrifice alotta accuracy, seems to be a nice lil package tho
I don't think they understand that a bazillion features and parts are NOT a good thing. You want the absolute bare minimum of mechanical parts. Look at Glock or the AK. Bare minimum of parts, reliable as hell. No matter the weapon design, if you make it overcomplicated it will not be practical. Remember that caseless rifle H&K made?
Hmm, having field stripped an AK, I can see that the ACR is much simpler in that respect. It's even easier than an AR for that matter. And clearly more ergonomic than the AK series. The gas piston operation should give it comparable reliability.
@TheColdTruth The ACR is bare min on the inside, the actual part of the gun that is mechanical, it is tool-less in its assembly, the only "extra parts" are the tactical accessories. A mark of a good weapon system is that mechanically it is bare bones and simple, but that you can have the variety of tactical modifications to use the system in a variety of roles and load-outs.
@TheColdTruth Dude this weapon has a 1 piece bolt how does it have a lot of parts? so inside there's basically the trigger group on the lower and the 1 piece bolt + barrel and gas piston. That's bare minimum.
the features on the weapon are all very useful
You need a charging handle and the bolt catch is a feature that the AK lacks it's simple doesn't add any parts to the weapon and doesn't really compromise reliability.
Im seeing alot of potential with weapon system, looking foward to see what other rounds the are going to chamber this in. I will definitely give this weapon a try!!!! I never liked the ar gas tube design in the first place but thats jus my 2 cents.
The problem is that for the military to change a standard-issue weapon,it involves thousands of guns and millions of dollars. Naturally, they torture test prospective guns to see if it is worth the expense. The last time the U.S military looked at getting rid of the M-16 is when they tested a caseless ammo machine gun that was developed by the Germans. The gun was not adopted because the gun would fire without pulling the trigger if it got too hot. The problem was fixed, but it was too late.
FN SCAR is based upon the Super FNC while the ACR is based upon the AR18.
ACR offers tool-less QD barrel change and the operating group can be removed without complete disassembly of the rifle. The ACR also offer three types of stocks and handguards vs the SCARs one choice. The ACR uses stock AR15 barrels and AR15 fire control parts in a user removable ALU trigger pack.
Nicely designed!

so thats a gas piston, and typical bushmaster layout, I think this out does the hk416, it should be contracted as the SCAR it's even better
iknowmy3table 3 years ago 2
But does the gas operation have the same problem as the M-16/M-4?
Or is it like the HK416 uses a proprietary gas system replacing the direct impingement gas system used by the standard M16/M4. The HK system uses a short-stroke piston driving an operating rod to force the bolt carrier to retract. This design prevents propellant gases from entering the weapon's interior, a traditional short-coming with direct gas impingement systems
Which is best? HK416 vs. XM8 vs. ACR????
TheMengDynasty 3 years ago
It uses a short-stroke gas piston, the only problems it would have related to the AR-15 / M16 would be related to the star chamber.
416 = good improvement.
XM8 = good in theory, but not ubiquitous.
ACR = good replacement / improvements.

I have yet to find anything Magpul I have not liked, but I have a few questions about the weapon since it changed from the Masada:
1. Is the charging handle non-reciprical?

Drake said civvie sales 2nd quarter 2008.
These are going to do exceptionally well across the board IMHO. The only addition I'd like to see is CHF barrels if these are not standard already.
MagPul know their stuff - impressive as always.

Is there a set release date for civilian sales?

It looks more like the FN SCAR. IMO

What I meant was it looked like the SCAR Externally to clear things up. :)
Either way I'd still go for the ACR.
