You people are an insult to Japan. Japan is one of the most competitive countries in the world. They're enthusiasm to succeed is what makes them so rich and influential. Communism and socialism take away that enthusiasm to succeed by taking away the so-called "dog-eat-dog" rule. Actually, the reason why Japan developed so rapidly was because they raised tariffs around their infant industries, which is NOT in accordance with free-market ideology. Also, I saw a show about how early on, their workers were absolute equals with their bosses. So for instance the workers at Honda worked hand in hand with their bosses, who provided guidance. This socialist tendency allowed them to develop a superior product. Recently, they've adopted a Western capitalist approach though.
Japan has such little resources, I can't imagine how high tariffs would help them develop. They import to export, and their economy is heavily dependent upon free trade. Of course, the Japanese aren't exactly competitive when it comes to getting hired, but we all know their large corporations are highly competitive.
Hold on a minute, when did I say they put tariffs on resource imports? Japan exploits Third World resources just as much as every other First World nation, if not more due to as you said- lack of their own resources. You misunderstood what I said. They erected trade barriers to importing manufactured goods so that their manufacturing industries could develop without being undercut by floods of foreign cheap goods. You see? This is how SK also developed. Free market does not develop industries.
Not only did Japan need resources, but it also needed manufactured goods to build their factories and processed goods to build their infrastructure. Importing ready-made goods to build their industries is a lot cheaper than importing resources and then processing them. Not only that, but they needed foreign goods (not just commodities or raw materials) in order to build the factories in order to process raw materials.
Unless you're suggesting the factories and infrastructure was already there.
The manufactured goods that they needed were, as you said, cheaper to import than to make themselves. Therefore, tariffs were not placed on the parts needed in the production line that they would be importing, only on the finished product that they would be exporting. That's how infant industries have always been developed.
It doesn't take away from being competitive... if you work harder than your brother you can get a higher spot in the company in Communism, or you'll be on the list as "one of those guys who could be manager". If you're in the party, eventually you can basically head the entire commune.

Actually, the reason why Japan developed so rapidly was because they raised tariffs around their infant industries, which is NOT in accordance with free-market ideology. Also, I saw a show about how early on, their workers were absolute equals with their bosses. So for instance the workers at Honda worked hand in hand with their bosses, who provided guidance. This socialist tendency allowed them to develop a superior product. Recently, they've adopted a Western capitalist approach though.

Japan has such little resources, I can't imagine how high tariffs would help them develop. They import to export, and their economy is heavily dependent upon free trade. Of course, the Japanese aren't exactly competitive when it comes to getting hired, but we all know their large corporations are highly competitive.

Hold on a minute, when did I say they put tariffs on resource imports? Japan exploits Third World resources just as much as every other First World nation, if not more due to as you said- lack of their own resources. You misunderstood what I said. They erected trade barriers to importing manufactured goods so that their manufacturing industries could develop without being undercut by floods of foreign cheap goods. You see? This is how SK also developed. Free market does not develop industries.

Not only did Japan need resources, but it also needed manufactured goods to build their factories and processed goods to build their infrastructure. Importing ready-made goods to build their industries is a lot cheaper than importing resources and then processing them. Not only that, but they needed foreign goods (not just commodities or raw materials) in order to build the factories in order to process raw materials.
Unless you're suggesting the factories and infrastructure was already there.

The manufactured goods that they needed were, as you said, cheaper to import than to make themselves. Therefore, tariffs were not placed on the parts needed in the production line that they would be importing, only on the finished product that they would be exporting. That's how infant industries have always been developed.
