I'm almost ashamed to say I am only familiar with Mr. Stoppard because of the movie version of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, but I own a copy of the play script and still read from it. It is absolutely amazing, I will have to look into his other work.
it is not just in the theatre. consider novels, say Emma, where at the end of the experience all the information has been passed on, but because it has been so craftily deployed, the audience/reader is more or less compelled to re-read the whole thing in the light of subsequent knowledge, (thus getting twice the pleasure.) that is why, in my opinion, one needs to see, say "Shakespeare in Love",over and over again.
I love his plays. he is so brilliant and informed and so contemporary when dealing with such a traditional form the theathre is. such an witty guy :) fantastic sense of humor.

Every-time I read Stoppard, I feel like an idiot. He's way to clever.

@gabiso68 I agree wholeheartedly! However, slight correction: It IS a great play.

at first i was not amazed by Stoppard's response, which seemed sort of bland, when I'd have liked him wittier or cleverer.
but then the bit at the end was spot on... theorizing a bit of fiction, with no reality or truth at all... Oh, Stoppard, you rascal.
