Gene Krupa was hot and one of the best looking band leaders out there. He had a lot of hits but this is one of my favorites - it's a little faster for the soundie than the 78
I am so very GLAD my Mom and Dad introduced me to the GK Orchestra by playing and then giving me the original 33 1/3, 10" record album they had with Let Me Off Uptown on it!!!!
janklompstra, Thank you for the Great video! You and it are Awesome!!!!
Blimey ! They managed to squeeze Anita into an evening dress ! Bet that took some doing, She prefered Slacks ! . . . . Roys still the Boy, though ! Excellent !
I agree with bearcub, I was born too late. This is just great. I was on here looking for June Christy stuff and stumbled across this. wow. what a treat.
WHOA!! Anita and Roy knock it down and out. Two all time masters of phrasing, chops and taste ! Let's not forget the author of this tune..the great Earl Bostic.
@freeport54 - in 1979 I was stationed in Army Artillary School Ft Sill, the soldier walking towards me his shirt label says BOSTIC so I says , you any KIN to Earl Bostic well the Boy Plum goes nuts because nobody outside his family knew who he was ... that is i was speaking to Earl Bostic's Great Nephew... we struck up a good friendship because My Father grew up on Jazz & so did I listening to his old 78's
@rentatrip1 Bostic is surely one of my idols. I don't think he had children. He was a complete musician and a master of the horn. The kid may have had some great stories of his uncle.
Lovely Anita. Have you seen than she is not wearing jacket and tie? She refused to use dress whe she sang with Krupa and Kenton... so this is a very rare short. Thanks for sharing.
he served in WWII and when I was really young would listen to nothing but all the good stuff from this era, especially this song, on the way to LA where he'd work.
to RememberSoCal: so let me understand this.....you are 16 now.......and the man that adopted you is now 86. If that is the case you better listen to all his stories about the past.....the great depression, ww2 etc......these old folks won't be around forever and its great to hear about their historical memories.
as told to terry gross by miss o'day, this is the riff that built krupa's house in yonkers. that by which i deem a voice to be choice is the no-other-factor as demonstrated by dinah, billie, shirley, lena, peggy and anita- oh, anita
to joeasmythe: it does seem like people were happier back then. They were not slaves to keeping up with their neighbors. Not that many people even owned cars.......they were damn happy just to be alive after the great depression and ww2. People now just want too much. My late father did not own a car till he was 30 years old......a house till he was 50......a color TV till he was 70
Hey Bolinman. I agree that racsism abounded in the era but explain Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie? I mean they seemed to rise above it despite any run ins they may have had? I think it was more about marketing and their agents than anything else, rather than saying "racism held one guy back",etc. Also in Eldridges case it could also be that he remained a "section" player mostly while guys like Armstrong and Gillespie stepped out front with their own bands, etc.
Roy Eldridge, one of the greatest jazz trumpeters, dancing and swinging to legendary Gene Krupa's band with famous vocal Anita O'Day. Their stars were really rising at this time. Very nice swing show!
Roy Eldridge was the greatest trumpet player of the era and everybody on the circuit knew it. They all loved respected him, and there was no greater honor than to have share a stage with Roy. I'm sorry that he never got the public credit he deserved, but there's no doubt any musician worth his instrument respected and admired that man.
I was told time and time again....pound for pound...Roy Eldridge was the greatest trumpet playr in the world.....as well as Harry James. sad part was Roy could not get any credit cause he was black....back in the 40s this was an issue...sorry to say.
Systemic racism prevented Roy from getting nearly the attention he should have. (For instance, if Gene had been "black" and Roy "white," imo as of '44 Roy would have been leading a successful big band and Gene wouldn't.) But Roy got a lot of attention. E.g., he won the '42 Down Beat readers' poll. He was very early re appearing in an integrated band in a Hollywood movie and re playing in an integrated network radio house band, he was featured by Artie Shaw in his big and small bands, etc.
Prior to this, Roy Eldridge played in Teddy Hill's band until he was beatean at Mintons by Dizzy Gillespie his influence. At first Roy hated Dizzy but they became friends. Same thing happened with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. I love Roy Eldridge. Everyone at my school who plays trumpet tries to sound like Roy.
Nice to finally see a video of Let Me Off Uptown by Gene & Co.; I have a 78 disc of this hit in my record collection. Is the video from a movie, or is this one of those early Soundies films?
Yes, this does appear to be one of the famous Soundies films. Soundie machines had a very short life in bars and restaurants. I heard that they were popular for only about 7 or 8 years.....Doug....Los Angeles.
Roy Eldridge did the best version of this song.Like it alot. The saxophne section should be standing in the beginning because they were playing the melody
Love the chemistry between Anita and Roy...too bad Roy misunderstood her dancing, which hurt their relationship, causing her to leave the Krupa band for Stan Kenton's...because for me, this period of the Gene Krupa band is my favourite of ALL the bands of this time.
I recently spoke the the Guy who was Krupa's Band Boy at the time of this recording. The Band Boy would travel around with the band, and help pack up the instruments after the performance. He could recall the night the band made this recording, and gave me some surprising info about what happened following the recording. Great Stuff !!!!
No kidding? I happened to meet the great Bass Player, Percy Heath at one of his last gigs and even drove him to the hotel after the gig...GREAT stories of a MASTER Bass Player...What did Krupa's "band boy" have to say about Gene K. and Anita O'Day? Funny anecdotes, I hope....! Let me know....AJM
Thank you so much for posting this video. I love the song, and it was so much fun to see it as well as hear it. (Anita said in her autobiography - which is very interesting reading, BTW - that the trumpeter, Roy Eldridge, used to resent her and complain that she always "upstaged" him!)
