No, we can't just times the denominators without doing the same with the numerator too. If you imagine a half plus a quarter:

1/2 + 1/4

Now if we times the denominators, 2x4 we'd get an answer of 1/8 and since we're adding a quarter to a half, that answer is too small.

If you imagine that one half is the same as two quarters, we can write the expression like this:

2/4 + 1/4 and if we add that together, we get 3/4.

i think we can..thats how i do it..i hope that works for these kind of differnt sums
