she has a interesting technique for coloratura singing not employed very often. i've heard it referred to as 'coup de glotte' but i don't know much about it. she can be thrilling at times, i think. i like her.
well she is not dreadful (most of the times) but the trick she does with her cords that is not based on tonality and above all it resembles a gargle. Coloraturas singing like ducks or chicken have been criticized ever since the appearance of the coloratura singing, Deutekom is one of a kind "gargling coloratura" and it simply brings me laughter - this is not singing
she gets the job done. it may be a valid technique historically used by rossini singers to sing all those ridiculously fast notes. maybe bartoli is a modern example to some extent?
You are refering to the rossinian "scaled vocalisms" which resemble lengthened trills in some way and appear mostly in arias di Bravura. Most virtuoso singers (Callas, Sutherland, Horne etc) performed this kind of fioritura precisely and with beauty of line. Bartoli sings them beautifuly also and not with this trick. The actual physiology of this particular "gargly" vocal production Im not sure it lies within "coup de glotte" but I am sure it sounds ridiculous ;)
All right, so I'll comment about Christina Deutekom. She is totally amazing; she is the best 'Queen of The Night' from the opera of mozart, look for the 'queen of the night' aria sung by Deutekom and you'll see what I'm talking about. I love her technique, these youtube videos showing her voice are a treasure. Thank you very much for this video, I had not listened to this music until now. It's so good to listen to Deutekom's voice. I love her gluking style, it's AMAZING, AMAZING. THE QUEEN

J'adore cette version de 1970. Elle a la maîtrise d'une voix splendide. La meilleure Armida qui soit. Elle apartient au royaume des dieux.
