music isn't obligatory a melody, music is a chain of messages that you must understand, it still art and art must be appreciated such its produced ! this is indie rock and that's a reason to be respected, and finally this music isn't for everyon, it's for real listeners and artists, not everybody can understand it, i like this band and i like indie music because of its originality not as top ten at Mtv station, live long independant rock that's the real music feel free as bird, peace for you all
I doubt it. Music is highly subjective and is generally appreciated in proportion to the emotional response evoked in the listener. Alec doesn't sing flawlessly (or even on key much of the time) but he does sing like few other people are capable of. It is precisely because of the idiosyncratic vocal hooks uttered by Alec that I think CYHSY is one of the better bands to emerge from the States in recent years.
So anyway, I look forward to you posting your video in which you "sing better."

yeah i know Alec Ounsworth through my mom's work... he's a really nice guy... he showed up Thursday night at the Cold War Kids concert in Philly and even played a tamborine for one of their songs, "Saint John". He's such a nice guy...
in regards to his voice, i don't think it's "bad" at all.. In my opinion, the uniqueness and somewhat oddity of his voice add to the crazy good music behind it...
His voice does sound somewhat better on studio versions, but I like his voice the way it is. His slur sounds drunk when he sings a bit slower, and I love it that way.

Obviously you're not an indie fan....they're not supposed to sound "normal" like you're probably used to songs sounding like. No, Alec's voice isn't what we perceive as "good", but then again, neither is Bob Dylan, and he is one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Well put typeais, this band is an example of the apathy that has befallen "indie" music. Since when does this brand of tune refer to whiny posers afraid of amps and content to repeat the same shit over and over? ok so i gotta be honest. his vocals...are horrible. but its obviously on purpose. and i dont know despite that... i love them anyway. plus their lyrics are really good.
Anyone who wishes to do something in a different manner than others runs the risk of being misunderstood; clearly CYHSY divides listeners along the lines of those who are interested/impressed by his vocal style and those who are annoyed/unimpressed.
I first saw CYHSY on Late Night With Conan O'Brian doing "House On Ice." They immediately stuck me as unique. Bought the CD, love it. They've got a new one out now which I haven't bought...YET. Alec Owlnsworth (spelled wrong) is picking right where David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Johnathan Richman (Modern Lovers) left off!
first time i heard this band i thought they were pretty cool, reminded me of Television a little bit. Now they just annoy me like most of the cardigan wearing whiners out there.
his voice is amazing...and the reason it may sound like he is trying to make it squeek or sound worse when it is live is because that is how his voice really sounds without all the touching up the studio does...his voice is awesome and the band would be no where near as good without it...kind of like the how the smashing pumpkins wouldn't have their sound without corgan's weird voice
I know what you mean about the voice thing. I've seen these dudes five times and each time the show is drastically different. The problem is that Alec (Ounsworth) seems to like experimenting with his voice a lot on stage, which is cool, but it can make for some unpleasant vocals. I'd say two of the shows I saw were out of this world, and the others were mediocre for the most part. I love this band, but their live show seems to vary quite a bit for sure.

CYHSY is a terrific band, they have a unique sound, and if you think there is some cookie cutter method to making music like this you have a lot to learn about music in general.
Personally I think there style is very much akin to old modest mouse but still very very good, nothing wrong with folk influence... still they are alittle cookie cutterish. but very artsy
good band, good day, good vocals, good instrumentals, bad audience, but i bet they got a fair bit of money, so now they can make more records, which means more great CLYHSY music!!!

hahahaha hardly anyone likes them, doesnt matter to me at all. hey but you're right, having a pitchy voice doesnt make you artsy, but when it sounds good with everything else playing, i would say it is. they're unique, and douches like you wouldnt even understand it. and if you dont like them it's cool,just dont go posting shit about them though. you're obviously gonna get some bad responses.

Since when does this brand of tune refer to whiny posers afraid of amps and content to repeat the same shit over and over? I first saw CYHSY on Late Night With Conan O'Brian doing "House On Ice." They immediately stuck me as unique. Bought the CD, love it. They've got a new one out now which I haven't bought...YET. Alec Owlnsworth (spelled wrong) is picking right where David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Johnathan Richman (Modern Lovers) left off!

his voice is amazing...and the reason it may sound like he is trying to make it squeek or sound worse when it is live is because that is how his voice really sounds without all the touching up the studio does...his voice is awesome and the band would be no where near as good without it...kind of like the how the smashing pumpkins wouldn't have their sound without corgan's weird voice

I know what you mean about the voice thing. I've seen these dudes five times and each time the show is drastically different. The problem is that Alec (Ounsworth) seems to like experimenting with his voice a lot on stage, which is cool, but it can make for some unpleasant vocals. I'd say two of the shows I saw were out of this world, and the others were mediocre for the most part. I love this band, but their live show seems to vary quite a bit for sure.
