Ichigo used Mugetsu, loses his powers, then a little over a year later Rukia stabs him with a sword made of pure spirit energy restoring all his powers completely, Zangetsu is back and he has a new Shikai and his new getsugatensho(the normal one while in his Shikai) literally cut an entire building in half, and that was just his normal, he hasn't even gone Bankai or used his Hollow mask in the Anime yet(Episode 361)

@MrTalonian Zanpaktou and Shinigami do cooperate in battle, remember from the soul society arc where Zangetsu gave ichigo all his power to defeat Kenpachi. Shinigami are always speaking and fighting with their zanpaktou, we just cant see it. (With the exception of Kenpachi, he doesn't who, or what, his zanpaktou is, the only reason he is a captain is because he has overwhelming power even though he is only in Shikai all the time like Ichigo)

So he can regenerate from anything even if there was nothing left of him, because he exists and doesn't exist at the same time.
