  • Damn. Seriously. I was just gonna spam all these videos with comments to win shit, and I find myself sitting through most of the review because of all the sexy tones and awesome playing. AD30 vs. TH30.. Now thats the question...

  • andy you are the man!.....but my wife doesnt like you because you make me buy things she thinks I dont need......well in with the new and out with old! HA HA

  • Comment removed

  • David Bowie- Black Country Rock :-) Congratulations Andy. Once again an excelent product review. And great musical taste.

  • that opening riff.......wouldn't happen to be Gunman by THem Crooked vultures would it?

  • @The7Evanator It is definitely, 100 percent not Gunman

  • @The7Evanator no, it's "soapmakers" by the fabulous band Clutch! check it out!

  • Fuck yeah, this is the first review i have ever seen in which someone plays a CLUTCH song! this fuckin' rocks!

  • Is it an open or a closed cab?

    Thanks!

  • hey man, I bought an AD30 head, and I am satisfied by the sound. But it's just not loud enough to play in my stoner band. I am using a 2x12 cabinet by Marshall right now.

Would it make a big difference if I would use a 4x12 cab?

  • @manuel293 - The AD30 is plenty loud...trust us. Get more speakers.

    -PGS

  • @manuel293 More speakers is 1 option, if your marshall is a 1936 150watt? it has 2 Celestion G12 75's which are real quiet speaker at 97db's (decibel) those cabs are quiet! a Celestion Vintage 30 is around 100db's (very loud) you put 2 of those in 'n' it'll be louder than GOD!!! when looking for speakers check the spec you need the Spkrs with a higer Decibel/sensitivity to create more volume,3-4 db's don't seem alot, trust me it's huge! Eminence Wizards are 101db Ear Bleeding

  • @ilovemywah Exactly correct. 3 decibles is perceptively the equivalent of doubling your amp's power. The higher sensitivity the speaker...the more volume output. Eminence speakers for me, all day long.

Nice to see someone else knows how to look beyond just the wattage output of an amp...

  • @manuel293 Wow, dude I hope you wear eye plugs!! LOL!!!

  • @manuel293 not loud enough??? I got that one too with the 212-COB box and it makes my ears bleed when i crank up the master volume. i dont wanna be around when ur rehearsing with ur band ;)

  • @manuel293 I also use a 2x12 Marshall with my ad30, and have never turned the volume past 1 o'clock! This things a beast!

  • @manuel293 Try getting the Orange 2x12 closed back cabinet. I have an Orange AD30HTC and 2x12 cab and it's VERY loud. My rhythm guitarist uses a 100 watt DSL and 4x12 cab. On stage he needs to crank his master volume to almost 7 to match mine at 4. The Orange cabs have the Vintage 30 speakers which really bring this amp alive.

  • Had my ad30 htc for over two years now, I'll never look back at my ac30 handwired ever again.. The ad30 breaks up pretty nicely with a low amount of push on channel one, and can remain as clean and full as you want. At times, it doesn't have that 'shimmer,' and I always wished it had an onboard effects loop and reverb - however, there are external solutions to all of these things. Plugging in and turning on, it's been a dream-come-true

  • @onemoreweekendbandct I saw Jimmy Eat World using Orange on their "Futures" tour & it sounded great! Being in a band hugely influenced by JEW (Loud melodic pop rock), my interest in orange amps peaked when I heard them playing through them. They sound great for that genre.

  • Hey, do you guys think this amp head is good for a pop/rockish kind of tone? In vein of Jimmy Eat World, Say Anything etc. I want to buy this amp but literally NO stores have this head so I can try it out, not even the combo version. Let me know what you think and help a guy out!

    -Connor

  • Andy is monstrous on guitar :) .

In best possible way :)) , be it technique or sound.

  • Mick Ronson!!

  • I play zeppelin and hendrix and I'm getting into black keys and stuff like that, is this good for me?

  • Hi, PGS!

I've decided to buy an Orange amp, but can't decide what is better - AD30 or Rockerverb 50. For me clean tone is more important than the dirty one, i play smth like Radiohead, Led Zep, Mars Volta. Please, help me!

    Best wishes,

    Tim

  • @fantofradiomuse That depends, if you want to use your clean channel in conjunction with reverb then obviously the Rockerverb is right down your alley. However, if you don't want to spend $2000 on an amp head the AD-30 should be fine, but keep in mind, the tune at 1:52 is about as clean as this amp can get, but he does have the volume pretty much cranked so if you brought that down it should get cleaner.

Either way, it's a fantastic amp, better than people give Orange credit for.

  • @fantofradiomuse Jimmy Page has now added the single-channel version of the AD30 to his arsenal, and used it during their 2007 shows. He can also be seen with it in It Might Get Loud. Omar Rodriguez Lopez has very recently switched to a Rockerverb combo, but before that used AD140 full stacks. The AD30 and AD140 share the exact same preamp, with the AD140 having a beefier power amp.

  • That's a pretty badass riff at 0:50 - 1:50

  • What is your opinion on el84 powered amps?

  • Finally, a valve amp with no latency between channels and finally a video with someone using the footswitch while playing. THANK YOU!

  • What is the first song you play?

P.S. Thanks for all your demos!

  • @elpiuvros soapmakers by clutch

  • @46lar ooooh yeah, it does get monstrous through an orange 4x12. in a very positive way ;-)

  • I have this amp. I use it through a Marshall Haze 1x12 cab, and it sounds pretty crazy. I've tried it through some 4x12s as well and it gets just monstrous.

  • "The Orange AD30 Head is probably the loudest 30-watt tube head you'll ever hear"

Andy, there IS one other that eats this thing alive, volume wise. the Orange Rocker 30. HOLY SHIZ that thing is loud.

  • +1 for soapmakers by clutch!

  • Hi, I have an AD30htc and a 1x12 closed back (Orange Cab)

Did you use the 2x12 open back cab or the closed one in this video? I love the overdrive sounds on my amp, but the clean sounds are quite 'boxy' to my taste?!

Would you suggest the open back cab to give a bit more 'air' to the sound? Or should I just sell the amp and get a Fender supersonic 22?!!

  • What mic are you using to mic the cab? and how do you have it positioned?

  • @trigrhapy13 - We made a video about our recording process awhile back. Search for "Scoop Recording" in our videos and all your questions will be answered. Thanks!

    -PGS Video Crew

  • to answer the questions about it's headroom, i've found that swapping out the preamp tubes controlling channel 1 (or whatever channel you're using for cleans) for a lower gain tube, like a 12AY7 gives a huge increase in headroom. that being said, it's more than loud enough for band situations. just don't expect fender cleans, you're gonna have a little hair on them, and you're gonna have to pick softer. that's life.

  • Sold it because of lack of versatility. But I sometimes miss it- it has a great sound! Just not versatile enough

  • @pacingBlue i dunno about that man, ive played anything from death cab for cutie and radiohead, right through to classic rock stuff, and also heavier stuff like mastodon and QOTSA. i also regularly play smooth jazz and blues through this amplifier and have never had versatility issues.

  • I'm picking up a ad30 htc tomorrow and can't wait, thanks for always uploading awesome demos guys! Hope it goes well with my les Paul 09 traditional!

  • what pick ups are on that les paul? i like need to know hah

  • @Forgeth3Bulletz - Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker set. Thanks!

    -PGS

  • you guys have some cool strats

  • Excellent Clutch selection. Can you do a demo sometime with something more like Tim Sult's fat, bass-y sound? Like "Burning Beard" or "Elephant Riders?"

    Keep rocking!

  • Just a question: does this amp keep a clean tone even at high volume? I know it is not a black face but can I have a clean tone in a live band situation? I see Andy keeping the volume quite high in the first strato demo

    Thanks

Great video by the way loves Andy playing

  • @thebluesmanohbabe had my AD30 for two years now, the clean is just about crystal even up to 20% gain and full volume (which is excessively loud). and as far as a slight overdrive that's musical as well, nothing i've seen or heard compares

  • Very flexible amp for sure, a few hundred more than the Asian made TH30 but that's what ya pay for. Great video. No pedals too.

  • Cool demo, but you skipped the part when you show us the awesome british vintage just slightly crunchy sounds you can make with this amp!

  • how do this and the ac30 compare volume wise?

  • @TheIsaacEaton I'm not sure. i think this is louder overall. This amp is way way better than the AC30 trust me, it has a fuller sound even at low volumes, and sounds incredible with the stock cabs, a greenback 4x12, as well as an alnico 2x12. this amp is just incredible, ive gigged it heavily for 18 months and never had any issues.

  • @aektzis91 yeah i just get worried when people say its loud enough, because my band is so much louder than the avarage local band, so I need something that can keep up. Right now I have a fender cyber twin, which I believe is 120 watts, but its a hybrid, so going to something all tube will be amazing for me. and 30 watts in tube power is more then 200 in SS power. Just wondering about the volume comparison, thanks man.

  • @TheIsaacEaton its definately more than loud enough, especially when you place an overdrive or fuzz in front of the amp, this thing screams its that good!

  • @TheIsaacEaton Don't worry. I have an AD30 running through a 2x12 Orange closed back cab and it is LOUD! I jam with all kinds of bands, and the AD30 has never left wanting more power. I bet this amp is much louder than the Fender Cyber Twin.

  • what's the riff at 3:44 which starts with an c power chord? Is it a famous song or a improved lick?

  • who does the background music for your vids? it rules!! love the drum sounds

  • @dsally23 - Andy's assistant Jamie does the background accompaniment. It's discussed in our Scoop video about our recording and production process. Thanks for watching!

    -PGS Crew

  • Really dig that you're showing the EQ settings now. Want to try some of these on my AD30. They sound killer.

    Great review, as usual!

  • Comment removed

  • What do you recomend for metal and when I ask this I mean in a small package like this

  • NO SPEAK NO SLAVE!

  • That is one nice sounding amp to be sure. Has a lot in common with an AC30, including a 320v B+. And with that it can not possibly be an amplifier that is classified as "Class A."

I wish companies like Orange would get regulated into stating accurate specifications. They just confuse customers and make Andy look ignorant.

  • @kemala1923 It is interesting comparing the marketing copy of amplifier companies to the rules and specifications of electronics, isn't it? Does anyone know how big the transformer would have to be to run 4 EL84's (or any power tubes for that matter) in true class A? Most amps with more than one power tube (single ended) do not run within class A specs. Most guitarist don't know and shouldn't worry about whether their amplifier's power section is class A or not!

  • @andrewt248 Yeah. Most guitarists believe that Class A means tube and Class B means solid state. I don't know how that assumption began.

  • @andrewt248 One funny thing about the output transformer in class A push-pull: It would be smaller for the same output power than for class AB (push-pull.) It has to do with cancellation of common direct current in the primary of the transformer for class A. In AB you don't get this and thus have to use a larger transformer with air gaps in order to deal with the effects of the direct current.

  • @kemala1923 So if the ad30 isn't a class A amp, the rocker30 isn't either!

  • @remotecontrol1324 The AD30 is using 4xEL84 while the Rocker 30 uses 2xEL34 for the final stage. I'd be guessing without seeing the voltages listed on the schematic. So here goes. EL34 = 11W in class A, max, each. I'd guess it is still Class AB but puts out quite a bit of power before the tubes cut off (turn off one at a time - but the amp is not yet going into saturation, then clipping distortion.)

  • Real nice tone on these and a great job by Andy

  • I love how Andy keeps reaching for the nonexistent whammy bar on the strat :)

  • @Ilovemyfender2 If you have a closer look, he's flipping the pickup switch or rolling the volume knob when he does that...Andy is perfect, stop looking for cracks...lol

  • Yes! Black country rock. One of my favorite bowie songs.

  • AMAZING SOUND!! does this amp have a specific orange cab to go with it? great demo, as always

    ~Andy

  • Damn, I love Orange. Can never decide which one is better, 'cos they're all genius. I really need to decide between a Dual Terror, or the Rockerverb. So hard when you love both things, lol. And Andy is yet again the guitar demon! Top playing as always. Please do some Melvins next time!!! :)

  • Now that ... was a great sounding amp.

  • Can you guy do a demo of a Peavey 6505?

  • What exactly does it mean for a tube to be running in "class A?"

  • i really wish andy would put up a video that examines his playing style more closely, mainly with his right hand technique.

  • @tommy1gtr

Yeah, that'd be fantastic. Probably a good idea for the next episode of The Scoop. That fingerstyle episode is the closest you can probably get to it for now.

  • Andy, you have the most wonderful job on earth.

  • now THAT is a great sounding amp

  • You guys have gotta demo the JCM 800 reissue 2203x for me through the 1960AX cab ;)

  • no speak no slave.

  • This is my amp already. It pooped out on me almost a year ago and blows fuses. Taken it to a bunch of shops and they never could repair it. It has two fuses and was blowing both back and forth... turns out the only thing no one has checked are the power tubes. I bought 4 yesterday and they're being shipped. It's ridiculous how long it took to figure out a simple problem. Ridiculous some amp shops these days...

  • I was really hoping you were going to play "Black Country Rock".

    RIP Mick Ronson.

  • i watched this video and was like, wow this sounds pretty sick. and then i saw the price tag and damn near shit myself.

  • Hum, I'm liking orange better now :)

  • too bad the 12ax7's in my fender blues deluxe's preamp don't sound like this...

  • Now that's a mean 30 watts. Nice price tag too.

  • thumbs up if you think andy should get a raise

  • Soapmakers!

  • CLUTCH!

  • i am strongly considering getting an orange amp. they make some incredibly attractive and great-sounding stuff.

  • Was it just me or did Andy seem a bit off with that Les Paul?

Or did he just have a couple minute slips because he's only human.... nah, the immortal Andy must've been fouled by the Les Paul...

  • i love the jb and the 59 combo

  • Clutch FTW

  • iewl...

    fender...

  • could someone please explain to me the sonic difference between pre-amp and power tube drive?

  • @takeittothemall Totally different tubes being used. The 12AX7's (think that's what it uses) and the EL84's sound really different and are operating at very different levels. I'm not sure I can describe the exact sound differences, but it is pretty big. Try it out with any tube amp with master volume at a store sometime.

  • pre amp gain is a little dirtier, and has more breakup, and of the two ( im not saying either of them do) this one sounds more like a solid state amp. its achieved by turning up the gain knob. its usually better for heavy metal, Power amp distortion is smoother, and has sag to it. its achieved by turning up the master volume. Its generally better for rock, but whatever works for you.

  • You are absolutely sick!

How the hell you pick with your hands like that?

Or that you hold your pick tightly...

Anyway, keep it coming, you rock!

  • @scomri there is a video when andy explains his picking technique. No pick used! I think it's the first edition of "The Scoop"

  • @scomri he fingerpicks

  • 2:26-3:06

    This!

  • Love the Clutch Riff -- Soap Makers!

  • shame that this great amp has been anally fucked by lame pop punk/scene kid bands like you me at six and all the bands that sound exactly the same as them

  • BLACK COUNTRY ROCK BY DAVID BOWIE. YOU GOD :D

  • I hope they were recording in a different room, 'cause Andy will be close to being completely deaf by now.

  • @bloodySunday77 - Yep. We isolate the amps in a separate room now for Andy's health and sanity.

    -PGS Crew

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos but thats just the thing, there is no sanity in rock lol. at one point in my small room i had a dimed 1959 slp and it was LOUD

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos If your going to do that, whats the point of a loud amp?

  • @mattman20132 - Loud tube amps sound good, son. Power tubes only work their magic when you turn up the volume. That's the point. Thanks!

    -PGS

  • man the amp must had been really loud at 4:04.

I tryed this one on a shop and I thought that channel 1 was allways clean because I couldn't turn the gain up past minimun whithout the enormous volume bost.

What a great amp it is.

  • more clutch....always a good thing!

  • A true vintage sound! And i love the old video effect in the beginning, which video editor do you use for that?

  • Gaaaaah I wish these had a Loop.

  • Cool amp, but i'm glad i'm picked up a Rocker 30 last week, El34's just give a better sound in my opinion.

  • Love it. Now what about that Gibson dealership...? Need a LP, an SG, or a 335 to go with your "OJ"

  • Cutch rocks, and he has been a die hard Orange user for years.

  • i've been waiting for pgs to demo this amp. love it

  • loved the clean tone, but that kind of overdrive just isn't my thing

  • crowes!

  • god I wish they had reverb. It makes the sound so much fuller to my ear with at least a tiny bit of reverb. regardless, Orange still has a really awesome tone. very chunky muffy gain when it's cranked up.

  • He seem to be searching for the tremolo arm when he is playing with the strat

  • still a lot of details with the gain cranked up!

  • BLACK COUNTRY ROCK!

  • regarding " classic Orange tones ". i've heard that phrase several times lately. can anyone out there enlighten a young man as to which classic acts used Orange on their backline ?? tks

  • @mongoose979 I know Jimmy Page has used and still uses one, and Pete Townshend used one, though his backline is almost all Fender now.

  • @mongoose979 jimmy page, joe perry and bon jovi have orange in their backline. also sabbath, for a period, used nothig but orange. go watch the paranoid video clip, behind them is a few orange stacks

  • Man, thank you so much for this demo. Finally a REAL HIGH QUALITY demo of this amp.

  • I'm using this amp for 3 years now, with an orange 4x12 cab. Not versatile at all, this baby only has a few tones, but it's very respectfull of what you put into it. Every guitar sounds different, and mean! It's very loud for 30W, I had to put an attenuator to be able to crank it at home, and I also had to add an effect loop, which was a huge lack. I love it for its unique sound, but I wish the EQ could be a bit more effective. Anyway, try it before you buy, it's not for everyone's taste.

  • here am i sitting in a tin can

  • Andy, please! Make a scoop episode showing your technique and how you hold your fingers please!!! Go a little bit more in depth please :)

  • What Les Paul is Andy using?

  • ANDY RAN OUT OF LICKS! haha. he used the one at 2:30 in the Lovepedal Eternity demo.

  • @tylerdwells kinda sad you would keep track of that.

  • @danukenator123 ive been watching the eternity video a lot lately cause i just bought one!

  • @tylerdwells my comment was trollish, sorry I'm just tired and acting childish

  • @danukenator123 Its the internet. say what you want.... douche bag. haha.

  • Hey andy what pickups does your les paul have?

  • @PATTON400 I would have to second that! That was a fat ass tone! What were they?

  • @PATTON400 Seymour Duncan JB & '59 (Hot Rodded HB set) ever since we did the video about a year ago. Any demos before then was a Duncan Alnico II Pro set.

    Thanks!

    -PGS

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos So you record videos up to a year before you upload them?

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos The Hot Rod set has a Jazz, not a 59. I wish they made a set w/a JB and 59 though.

  • @smoss469 - Oops, our bad. You're correct, JB and Jazz. Thanks!

    -PGS

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos I still vote for a JB/59 set at the same price point as the JB/Jazz set!

  • hot damn, love me some clutch

  • nothing to jerk off about but its nice

  • The Soapmakers! Great tone!

  • Cool, but come on guys. 720p or 1080p!

  • 9th view

  • nice!
