Unusual phenomenon - listen to someone slagging off Milton Keynes and then just ask them where they come from. Shuts them up straight away. Stange but true....
I remember this. There was a great futuristic buzz about the place, so it's sad to see that places like Bletchley Leisure Centre, the Agora and the Point got dated so quickly. MK in 80s was like Dubai is today. Makes you wonder what people will make of Dubai in 30 years time ...
I can relate to every one of thise pictures in this video. Born in Bletchley, I saw all this happening around me. The 70`s and 80`s was a great time there, but as times moved on, so did I. Moved from MK in 1995 and moved from UK in 2005. Come back now and again, great memories ,Thanks Lee for all of these.
Hey, Great video. Sorry for the plug, but i run a website called HiddenMK so if your interested in Milton Keynes and its history why not drop by, we are always looking for people to write articles as well.
i remember mk in the 70s all the open space now its ruined with high rise buildings. can remember when it was said nothing over tree hight would be built, didnt think they meant red wood hight
Incredible! In the 1970s Beanhill, Netherfield, Fishermead, Stinkers Bridge, et al look so clean, hopeful and modern. And what do they look like now? Bletchley Leisure Centre looked good too - the red slide! I remember that. I still like Milton Keynes but it has gone downhill alot, I suppose the usual British scum class don't help.
Fantastic! Love MK, my Grampa farmed the land before it was built on, and hated it as it got bought up and developed. I love it, its a great place to live and work, got alot going for it in so many ways. Cannot believe they took down the pyramid at Bletchley recently! Some great childhood memories. And great grown up memories too! Brilliant place.
don't particularly care too much for Lee Scrivens, but thought this was very nicely put together.. Got me quite sentimental about keynes in a funny sorta way. 20th century frontier town. I was one of those kids in the red balloon adverts, lived in the area mostly ever since, though I've been lucky enough to be in Olney and Newport Pagnel, hence not "really" MK.. ha ha.. Must say today MK is starting to flourish. All those twiglets are now trees. REALLY loved the music you chose too. Well thought
Wow. Talk about memory lane. My father was one of the architects working for MKDC - we moved there in the very early 70's. I went to Simpson, and then was at Stantonbury when it first opened. I left MK in the 1990 moving to the USA where I have resided since. I get back to MK every year to see all my family. This makes me miss it just a little more as I remember all those sights. Awesome ( I think )
I moved to MK in Jan 77. this brings back so many happy memories of what a contradiction of urban excitement and idyll it was. I'm now 41, still live in the area and I'm proud to call MK my home. I hope my kids look back when they're my age and love it just as much as I do
Excellent! But also sad to see all those estates - Beanhill, Netherfield, Fullershit looking so new and exciting. We all know what craphole they are now.
I think it would be nice to see a greater selection of photos from the late '80s/early '90s developments (Emerson Valley, Crownhill, Woughton on the Green, etc.).
If you visit the reference section at MK Library there is plenty of material of this time published by MKDC. A really good snapshot of MK in the later 80s/early 90s is Milton Keynes : Image and Reality (by Terrence Bendixon)
Our meeting place has smashed up by youths, a drug dealer lives down every street and if you don't know anyone or don't live here you're getting raped.
Nice to see how things used to be....Mk is still ahead of its time, shame about the areas which have fallen to disrepair, the ocuncil need to remember what MK was all about, giving the youth of today and tomorrow a opportunity unlike anywhere else!

It was mid 70's as so many Londoners were moving to Milton Keynes I left it and moved to London. I'm still swimming against the tide in life!

Its just a shame we never got that monorail! Would have been much better than our rubbish bus system.

Such a nice futuristic idea. Shame Milton Keynes turned out to be a culturally void chav camp.

The book is about MK in the 1970s. Hence, why no 80s or 90s.
