It's not called tradition...it's tradition in Germany,Austria,Hungary etc. The shooter gets a branch, german called "Schützenbruch". The dead animal lays always on the right side of its body, on the body lays another Bruch with the broken tip in direction to the head it's a female animal and with the grown tip it's a male animal. And in the mouth of the animal is a Bruch, it symbolises the last meal.

That is a big part of German hunting-tradition.
