  • This song reminds me of my exboyfriend who was a hockey player and they wanted to train him for the big leagues, he said no and told me he always regretted it. At the age of 22 he took his own life. RIP Grant!

  • reminds me of a friend of mine in illinois. not the hockey part, but the accident part. every time i hear it, it takes me back to the day i was negotiating the cloverleaf on i-74 in urbana. saw his truck upside down in the middle in about a foot of snow. they traced his footprints to his dad's shop.but it wasn't til about 6 hours later that they found his old lady under the truck. she had been ejected through the sunroof.

  • I saw him in Montreal 2008 (Bell Centre) opened for John Melloncamp...Cochrane was better than Melloncamp...Tom played ALL his RedRider songs, and this solo songs as well...Cochrane was better than I excepted to see live :)

  • This is actually a sad song if you know the story behind it :( n all I wish for is my dad to support me as I play hockey but instead he tells me everything I did wrong meanwhile he's not the best at hockey.. I wish he would see how I feel about it because hes doing the same thing that his dad did to him and he didnt like it either...

  • @hockeyforlife1313 Your comment is "right on" I was the same with my son until I got a lot of professional help. Now I live it with him, rather than through him. Your dad is a good guy, but he needs help. You are wise beyond your years dude; Good luck. :)

  • This song man everytime it makes me think about how I play hockey and I live my life and Luc bourdon this song tells the tale of his life start to finish man he was great an inspiration to us all rest in peace my boy Luc bourdon once a Canuck always a Canuck

  • George Pelawa from Bemidji state ? had another scholarship for football and was a pretty damn good baseball player too . His nickname was " the shark" and no there were power forwards already in the nhl before he was ever drafted , Cam Neely and Gary Roberts to name just two .

  • My 3 yr. old son "can-opened" me back in Feb. on our backyard rink..........he laughed for about an hour. Hurt my back. If he gets to the big leagues I'll have a story to tell.......one can dream a little.

  • nuthin like some good old canadian rock!!!

  • <3333

  • this songs reminds me of the same thing man, my dad used to say i was the next big thing in hockey, lol ofcourse i never came close, but just membering his smile and how proud of me he would get, lol makes me miss being a kid with the whole world ahead of you, lol

  • @joemista66 beautiful

  • My dad always used to say this song reminded of my bro in Baseball and "Mama let him play" for me in Hockey. He died in 2007. I love you dad. <3 This song brings a tear to my eye every time.

  • Love the song, the album. I have been a big fan of his since the Neruda (my personal favorite) album. Unfortunately, you don't hear much of his music on the radio in the states. I'll pop some of his music in and all I hear is "who's that?". Sad. He's an awesome musician and writer. Wish he'd make it down to Spokane sometime. Would love to see him live!

  • An amazing inspirational song from a FATHER to a SON!

  • I love it

  • next to the old "swing march" from hockey night in canada this is the best hockey song. tom conners "good old hockey game" is kind of hokey-pardon the pun, and the new hnic theme isn't siuted to the game.

  • @znogypogy I agree with you except for the Stompin Tom part

  • thank you thank you thank you!!!!! i <3 this song

  • "Sometimes at night I can hear the ass crack, it sounds like thunder and rips through my back. "

Tom, it may have been an idea to watch your pronunciation of 'ice' on that one.

  • Who saw Tom Cochrane at the World Juniors game yesterday??

  • @jamesbondaygee not me?

  • Go Canada, good luck to all the rest!

  • R.I.P Bob Probert

    we miss you

    forever a bruin

  • @Cheesiethecheese He was a red wing and a b-hawk

  • sends chills down my spine.

  • man i love this song..

  • this song got to me and like it makes me think every game i play i get better and better and maybe someday i will make it to the big leagues wouldnt that be an amazing dream

  • Dedicated this to my aunt and uncle when my cousin got drafted. PYSYK POWER!!!

  • I saw him open in concert for John Melloncamp (Feb. 08) @ the Bell Centre, Mtl.

He played ALL his most popular songs (did an encore even!!). Great band to see live. Too bad Melloncamp sucked that night!! (didn't play: Hurts So Good).

  • @10stanie I also saw him open in concert in Feb '08 in London, ON. And I agree that Mellencamp could've been better, I was disappointed that he didn't play cherry bomb.

  • actually it was about a specific player. cochrane met a man on tour who talked about how his son was going to play in the nhl, but eventually tom realized the man was speaking in the past tense. the man's son got killed by a semi. very sad.

p.s. doesn't anybody read the liner notes?

  • been ages since i seen the video for this song

  • Cochrane, 1-0 vs. Tyson!!!

  • omg i am so sorry

  • Gretzky's dad must kindda feel like this...just reversed.

Last seconds in a game called life

    nuts

  • Only us Canuckleheads hear this and understand he's singing about Hockey. :)

  • @NerdyCanadian i know he is singing about hockey and im 13 i have know that since i was at least 12 i think 11

  • He asked me if we were going to play "Boy Inside The Man" that night and said that his son had been a big fan. I asked him if his son would be there, not realizing the man had been using the past tense. That was when he told me his son had died in a car accident that past summer... I felt for that guy, his story hit me hard.' Eventually he wrote Big Leagues after hearing this but yeah...not Pelawa.

  • go canada! there is so much canadian talent out there if u no where to look- tom green is canadian, so is mike myers

  • @kurdtss Thanks for uploading the Tom Cochrane vids. I ahve been waiting for ages for some of his work. How this guy has been overlooked by the USA is beyond me. Adams can't hold a candle to this guys songs, themes and voice!!!

  • Tom Cochran was inspired to write this song based on one player however it wasen't that one speciffic player but NHL draft picks in general. That's why when he played this song live at Luc Bourdon's tribute it fit so well

  • This song was written after Tom talked to his dad in an airport. It is about a kid who was going to the big league, he wrote this and it's a true story. I'm friends with Tom's niece.

  • @MEYERKELLY It is a true story indeed. Well said :)

  • strange looking guy. but awesome song

  • this is the song we play 4 our son, hes autistic and he loves this song!!!

  • so much love

  • RIP Lucas Puchala, Alex Robichaud and Mason Shore.

  • Big League is definitely in my list of top 10 rock songs of all time...

  • RIP Clifford Duchesne, you were like a brother to me. We all miss you so much. I hope my nephew, your name sake, is half the guy u were. Love you bro!

  • @curtisisboss1 Last year, right? I was there!

  • R.I.P Matt Viger #4 never will be forgotten

  • love thism song

  • this is a great song love it :-)

  • The Vancouver 2010 Closing celebrations were good but..... I think Tom Cochrane was missing!

  • Mee too! I've seen them this close in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the Red River Ex It was AwesomE! the blond one fell off the stage from twirling so much!...LMFAO

  • Seen Them play this Live! (:

  • that is exactly what this song is about i went to a concert my self and before he played this song he told us why he wrote it. Tom you are the best....and you music is great

  • This song is even more heart breakin since i knew the story based on this thing.. Bless that young man!

  • George Pelawa. 14th pick by Calgary Flames. Signed on to play at North Dakota from Bemidji Minnesota

  • @mcleod6699

George was my cousin and it is nice to see that many people still talk about/remember him.

  • best song i always listen to it before hockey

  • I play for the Peewee B Cornwall Colts and be4 i went to my Alexandreia Tornament, i heard this song. Those 3 games i played i think were my best games in my life!

GREAT SONG!! TOM UR THE BEST!!!

  • B rep????if ure b rep ill play u this year #18 for morrisburg captain:)(Y)

  • luc man i miss ur smile at the rink

  • It was actualley written after a hockey player that had been drafted into the NHL and was still playing university level hockey got into a car accident and passed away on his way to a red rider concert, so Tom corchane wrote this song in tribute with him.

  • Can't be Luc... "Bourdon died at the age of 21 near his hometown of Shippagan, New Brunswick, when his motorcycle collided with a tractor trailer."

Does not compute with song lyrics. 18 yrs old and driving with his girlfriend.

  • he bought a motorcycle and like a week later he was driving it on the highway and apperently the wind took him over and he got hit by a logger, R.I.P buddy we all miss you

  • Comment removed

  • R.I.P Luc Bourdon

    we miss you

    forever a canuck

  • @mx799 if Bourdon were still alive there is no doubt in my mind he'd be a key part to the 2011 cup run. Right now it's 3 games to 1 on San Jose in round 3

  • Every time i here this song..i get a tingle in my spine....i have always loved this song...i have heard probably 1000 times over the years between whistles when i was playing hockey..

  • dude this is how it is in minor hockey, drafted, go south, or ohl, whl. but sounds like you didn't make 'AA'

  • R.I.P Luc Bourdon

    we miss you

    forever a canuck

  • yeah it is really is sad what happened r.i.p. Luc Bourdon

  • what happened to him?

  • he hit a truck and died

  • WO! I was at GM Place and these guys played this song in memory of Luke Bourdon.

  • this song is sad :*(

    but i love it <3

  • this is Canadas second national anthem...pure Canadiana, love it

  • agreed, but the funny thing is its about an american player

  • George Pelawa, a 6' 3'' 235 lb, right winger, would've been the first power forward in the NHL, drafted by Calgary 16th overall, full ride to North Dakota (hence the "scholarship to a big US team" from the song) died in a car accident labor weekend '86

  • @sirstarsalot that is actually not about him, its about someother player. it is based on a true story just not about Pelawa

  • @sirstarsalot Thank you very much for the story. I knew since the first day i heard this song i had to be a true story.

  • @sirstarsalot Its based on a true story, but Tom Cochrane has said that its not about George Pelawa. He said its based on an unfortunately truth, but is about a different player.

  • no. it's not. it's about a canadian boy who got a scholorship with an american team. o.O

  • this song is so sad...

  • i love this song i listen to ever time before a game im on a 23 game point strike try it it works.

  • Does anyone know where I can get this song? It's not on I-Tunes. Tahnks

  • Heard this on WRDU in Raleigh NC. They always mixed great songs like this with crap like zep and skyn. Give some southern DJ's credit.

  • go oilers!

  • we never forget u...rip luc ...you were one of the best.........still the best for us!!

  • My dad told me about a story of his buddy that he went to school with. All he did was play hockey and had a scholarship and every thing well one night when he was out with his friends and gf they got into a major accident and he was crippled. He didn't get to play for the team. He then Turned to his stereo and turned on this song. He told me that this song was written for his buddy and was played at his graduation. When ever my dad hears this song he still gets chills down his back.

  • Even though the song is about hockey, it was featured in the baseball movie "The Final Season" which was released in 2007. It is a fantastic song that really inspires me. For some reason I had never heard it until I saw the movie. It would be great to show the clip from the movie where the song is played. Tom has a great song here!!!

  • number 28 LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUC BOURDON

  • I saw this song on the hockey awards show in 2006! awesome song, profound line of do right to others like you do to yourself cause you never know when you gonna check out! Hockey rocks!

  • R.I.P. Luc Bourdon forever a canuck.:)

  • This is about George Pelawa, a 18 yr old MN hockey player and the 1986 first round draft choice of Calgary. He received a scholarship to play at North Dakota, which is the college the song refers to. A semi-truck veered over into the wrong lane of a two-lane highway, and a head-on collision occurred. No alcohol was involved, and a sleepy trucker was involved. Tom Cochrane met George's father shortly after his son's death, and the story stuck in his mind, and the song was written around 1988

  • he said the story "hit him like a tonne of bricks" in a radio interview.

  • Once again, I am suprised by how many people know this story. When they are in your family you know it, but so many people still remember it...

  • its about his friends son who died in a car accident and he played hockey anytime he could and had a scholership to michigan and was going to be in the nhl

  • what is this song really bout?

  • look above 1st post

  • I'm an American and don't know as much about hockey as you people do. Could you please fill me in about the guy who this song is about? So sorry about the loss.

  • that was so sad to watch the song almost mimics bourdon's life exactly

  • rip bourdon, im aflames fan but hell i respect u man RIP

  • Thank you very much. I'm from Vancouver and forever a Canucks fan. I appreciate what you said.

  • it sure was a perfect song for the bourdon tribute RIP

  • yea it was

  • im a vancouver canucks fan, who lives in vancouver... and on opening day they played this song for the Luc Bourdon memorial, it was the perfect song for that moment

  • I'm 47 years old and I still to this day get watery eyes when I hear this song. Losing one's son or daughter is the worst pain known to man. I pray I or any of you won't ever know what it really feels like. My dad does---it's the only time I ever saw him cry. How does the saying go about the grace of God? Thank you Tom for a great, powerful, meaningful song.

  • He didn't Die you dum , i went to one of his concerts this summer very inspiring ,Life is a highway, big league Both life changing songs

  • THIS ONE IS FOR CASS....LOVE GREG

  • just see efgberts comment 4 mths ago--it tells you what this song is all about---thats that

  • I was watching something on VH1 where he was on as a "one hit wonder"... I'm like ok.. and yes this song is obviously is about hockey.. one line that should definetely clue you in is , "ice meets metal". I love this song. Very Canadian!

  • I always loved this song and I love the video just as much.

  • It is not about baseball, it is obviously about hockey, the greatest fucking sport ever.

"My boy's gonna play in the big league, my boy's gonna knock em' dead" refers to the physical aspect of hockey because it is a mans sport.

He'd be up at five, take shots till eight...after school and back on ice, that was his life..."

Anyone who loves hockey knows that these lyrics speak volumes. I get goosebumps when i listen to this song.

  • Tom Cochrane: The Canadian Springsteen.

  • dont know how people think this is about baseball it is HOCKEY the best sport in the world. also listen to the lyrics defenitly about hockey

  • I love this song, sad though it may be......

    And yes, HOCKEY RULES!!!!

  • FUCK every sport besides hockey no offence i am a sports fanatic i love playing sports you name it i played it but if hockey were never invented then i do not knw what the hell i would do i have been skateing since i was 4 and i am dedicated to the sport i don't care what anybody says hockey is canadas sport!

  • This song enspires me...

  • I tried to post a few minutes ago but it doesn't look like it went through.

Tom Cochrane is very badly underated in the US. I only seem to hear him on Canadian stations. Thanks for posting this.

  • HOCKEY RULES

  • Best song you ever wrote and performed Tom. Love the the passion you put this.

  • "my boys gunna play in the big league""my boys gunna knock'em dead" i picture it as a baseball song. when i first heard this song in a movie it was about baseball.

  • I think although it is a hockey song it can relate to pretty much any sport

  • That's why i hug my sons tight each day like there's no tomorrow! even though they get mad or embarrassed. Hold on to the memories and hold them close to your heart especially when your son has a favorite past time activity like HOCKEY..love it just like your son does!

  • Don't ever view time spent with your kids as time wasted.

  • Wonderful! One of my favorites!

  • efgbert---thanks for the background on this song.

  • Google George Pelawa, and you'll find plenty of hockey discussion about him to this day.

• the good sports players alway end up dieing at an early age. and it's like a cures so i guess that all the big league players are luckey that they didn't pass away. P.S. i happend to my brother he always loved hockey, playing AAA and going to move up but then he got hit by a drumck driver :'(

  • best hockey song....but also sad

  • It's about hockey.

  • you all realize that the "boy" dies right?

  • yeah he died. :( sucks

  • my boys gunna nock them dead

  • Great song, easy to identify with the sentiment!

  • I think this song is so moving and touching. It almost makes you feel proud but yet hopeful and sad. It's a good motivation song for little hockey players all around the world and for their parents as well....juss love it!

  • i want my boy toplay in the big leagues

  • gretsky earned his ice time more than any other nhl player,, dont ever compare him with crosby ...

  • I love this song!!!!! It means alot to anyone who has ever played.

  • I'm from Australia and i have never played ice hocky. This song still means a lot to me...it's a great song, very sad story, but great song...

  • This song has so much feeling in it! It really expresses a lot of insperation in the guy!

  • i would love this song alot more then i do now if it wasn't so sad because the kid did every thing he could to get to the big leagues and then when he does get to them he ends up dieing from a truck driving in the rong lang. :'( :(

  • i love this song. i whould love it more if it was about crosby, not gretkey

  • have you ever actually listened to the song?your stupid its not about gretskey at all!!!its about tom's friend who had a son that was going to play in the big league and he never got the chance because he got killed in a car accident!

  • R.I.P. George Pelawa.

  • Well, when my boy Clay was born, I just loved this song, whether it meant big league sports or music, I wanted my boy to do either, like any dad!

  • lol, hockey? i know it doesnt make sense, big leagues - baseball .... idk wat he thinks. Its a term used for mlb ovbbiously+

  • use your eyes boy!

  • have u ever heard of a 1 on 1 baseball fight?

  • anyone who ever laced up skates knows how it feels...this one gets you right in the heart. we also used to do our pre-game skate to Victory Day-another great Tom Cochran song.

  • hockey fricking sucks

  • everytime i hear this it takes me back to the feeling of being on the ice..its unreal

  • HOCKEY ROCKS!!

  • when i first heard it i thought it was about baseball

cause to me big leagues sounds like a baseball term

    OH WELL I LEARND

  • so much better live

  • George Pelawa, Bemidji, MN

  • thats a good song

  • sometimes i can hear the ice crack, ice meets metal, cant you drive me down to the big leagues...hm it is obviously about hockey

  • you never can tell when you can check out

  • you're really fuckin dumb for wrinting that....

  • its about baseball

  • hmmmm... baseball, eh?

    guess again.

  • hockey

  • Baseball? Maybe in your mind. It's a pretty well-known fact that this song was written about a young hockey player who lost his life. Have a good one. Next time you post something, know what you're talking about.

  • I don't know the details surronding this song, but I think it's great that 20 years later, people are commenting on it. I really appreciate the energy TC abd RR put into this video. You can see they are not just playing notes, they are kickin' ass!! Love it. Thanks for posting kurdtss.

  • The story I've heard of the radio goes like this. A good prairie kid dies in car accident. The father runs into Tom and tells him the story, saying that he was a huge fan of his. So in his honour, Tom wrote this song.

  • This song also reminds me about a tragic atv accident that involved my young cousin. He would of played in the NHL because he was in the same rank as Crosby in bantam. His younger brother is now playing his 2nd season in the Q league. God Bless # 95.
