At last report (1042 hrs 1Sept2008), the storm had been being downgraded to Cat. 2 at landfall, having never come close to achieving Cat. 5.

it's not an issue of party, really. but clearly between the two, blanco proved incompetent and deserved to see the end of her political career for trying to pass the buck.

I think they've really learned many lessons from Katrina. So far, it appears that they know what they're doing.

This is why Jindal was elected. He campaigned as a reformer who would fix Louisana's infrastructure so that it could better handle natural disasters. Let's hope for eveyone's sake that he's the real deal.

i am sorry but i am not racist but i have noticed that New Olreans have more african americans then white americans. i am sure that this is obvious to many and i don't mean to point out stupid obvious facts. but why stay in new orleans? if it's such a terrible place for weather? why not leave and never return? does that not make more sense?

New Orleans is one of the most important cities in America. It is one of the only ports capable of taking in some of the biggest ships in its deepwater channels. The problem isnt the location, it is the poor engineering of the levee system.

There used to be large levees that were about 100 yards wide and wetlands from new orleans to the gulf, but business interests forced the levees into a thin concrete wall held together by girders to push back some of the largest pressure mother nature has.

Oh please, Florida gets more hurricanes than anybody and nobody's saying they should move. California gets earthquakes on a regular, not to mention the volcanoes, tornados, mud slides, snow storms and other natural disasters that can strike Hawaii, the midwest, the north, etc. and nobody bitches about people who live there. And what the hell does more black people than white people living in NOLA have to do w/ anything, unless that's the reason you're singling out New Orleans in the first place.
