  • this is so nice!

  • I'm not saying that I think this song is based on Vladimir Nabokov's novel, "Lolita" because I wouldn't even attempt to understand the genius of Stephin's mind. But to me, this song really evokes the story of their relationship perfectly. Even the reference of butterflies.

  • Thank you for this, it's just taken three parts of my life and rammed them together (in an amazing miracle-esq way) <3

  • Thankls for making the video, it was beautiful ( :

  • which album is this from?

  • @Tba126 "69 love songs", their best one.

  • Great video well played, reflects the song perfectly.

  • Listening to the song and half way through an advert comes on about Adam Lambert... FUUUUU

  • so beautiful and bittersweet..

  • I cant listen to all their songs but for the most part their pretty decent, if i say so myself..lol

  • @HardcoreJesus100 I must start by saying that this is possibly the first comment I am making on Youtube... Why? What is the point of your comment? Honestly. What kind of response were you looking for? Did you think something fun and exciting was going to happen after you wrote a completely unimportant and pointless sentence? You contradict yourself and in the end your statement is meaningless. Please let me know. I see posts like this often but never to such an aggressively boring extent. WHY???

  • @russellsuereth it would seem my words have touched you in a way no other man has. Calm down, big guy. How about you not worry yourself with my comments. I didnt see anything stating what my comment had to consist of so if you would, please go fuck yourself, bro...

  • Not for all North Carolina.

  • hipster???? please.... magnetic fields dont belong to any fashion trend. they are original

  • superb!

  • The butterfly metaphor is absolutely brilliant. I also love the banjo riff of the Eb. This song is just.. Beautiful.

  • Like this comment if you want this to replace one of the top comments, which are totally unworthy!

  • one of Rachel Corries favorite songs..activist who killed in Gaza-Palestine by israel forces...march 16 2003...23 years old...

  • why does that have ten thumbs up...

  • uhm, is The Shield some stupid TV show?

  • @Landerovitch2 You're half right. It WAS a tv show, but it was definitely NOT stupid.

  • yeah...same here...the shield brought me here...a search than began a few years ago!!!

  • thanks you Tom Milson

  • The two top comments on this song are incredibly unworthy.

  • @doomslang

Agreed the words' best song ever' should be in the top comment..

  • what can i say about this brilliant song... I cant handle it..

  • Unboyfriendable! That's great.

  • Why would someone say something like "This is too hipster to handle" It is what it is. I am certainly not a hipster and I think this song is beautiful. You are obviously narrow minded and have no appreciation for good music.

  • 44 people would have stayed for all the tea in China.

  • everyone just shut up and listen.

  • this vidoe make me laff

  • this song always succeed to give me a permanent goosebumps

  • S. Merrit almost makes me swoon. Brilliant tune smith and writer.

  • no self-respecting hipster refers to themselves as ”hipster” same as hippies so anything else u people wanna say?

  • @nate00000069 i know, because most people labelled hipsters are very ashamed of it. strange.

  • This song makes me thirsty & I want ice tea

  • Not that it really matters, but listening to a song just beause they think its a part of a movement, or whatever you want to call it seems incredibly dumb. If youre listening to this, odds are because you enjoy it.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Stheno & Euryale are worth checking if you like this

  • :,(

  • So what happens after the cat lands?

  • SLOW MOTION CAT DROPPING ACTION! sweet.

  • Unboyfriendable is my new favorite word.

  • I'm guessing no one else was brought here by David Egger's intro to Infinite Jest

  • I met this girl, she originally is from lithuania, studies in the states and was here in Austria for exchange. We fell in love. She showed me this song. Two days before she left we got engaged. Yesterday I spend 6 hours at the airport with her, we had a picknick on the floor, with mine and cheese. Today I sit here and listen to this song and I cry. Wow.

  • @TrinkMilch hahahahahahahahahahaha good one

  • @TrinkMilch Österreich, oida?

  • ..Does anyone else cry? I cry when I listen.

  • "love junkie" by tom grotewohl... these guys might be the next magnetic fields. too early to know for sure. search it!

  • Damn this song..

  • What instrument is that? some kind of guitar, a sitar?

  • @pirhana37 sounds like a Banjo

  • @XxknowsabexX Yeah it does. I've never heard this band before so I wasn't sure what kind of instruments they used... a banjo seems obvious now. Thanks.

  • What a lovely voice...

  • they used to appear in the adventures of pete and pete

  • Every time i watch this, once I get to 1:55 I can always feel the anguish, pain, and anger in his voice. It is almost like for that split second, I feel the anger he feels. Stephen definitely has a gift of relaying emotions through music, and he can make them very realistic.

  • *Annoying spammer mode on*

I play in a group inspired by the Magnetic Fields, check it out on my channel!

Oh, well, if you don't want to,just mark this as spam.

    I hate spammers.

I'm gonna mark myself as a spammer.

  • @Tunnelzzzzz nice to see someone actually has some humour!

  • @crubba :D

  • I'm not entirely sure but I think this song is about the narrator falling for a lesbian 'both of us know that's not possible' 'you tell me that you're unboyfriendable'

  • @Tabroxfcc not sure that stephen merrit would fall for any woman

  • @lakejautman oh, is he gay? that's awesome, I had no idea

  • first heard this on the shield brilliant song

  • This is too hipster to handle.

  • @expectoyerface says the guy with lady gaga, lil wayne, and glee in his favorited videos!

  • @expectoyerface I don't think that word means what you think it does, son.

  • @expectoyerface No self-respecting hipster would've used Lucida Handwriting on the title card. Had it been Helvetica Ultra Light, or maybe Gill Sans, you'd be bang on.

  • @expectoyerface You gotta admit, it's still a good song

  • @expectoyerface +1 to you.

  • @expectoyerface, hipster? i think the only genre this song fits under is "fucking beautiful"

  • @TheDannyB94 You live in denial, man. This is so fuckin hipster and that's ok, I don't see problem.

  • @Toughguysdontdance12 What makes it hipster... I've heard this all over the internet now, and I honestly don't understand it at all... Is it the fact that it's taking things from the last 50's and so on, or something?

  • The chorus is what I'd love to sing to the guy whose got a grip of my heart right now.

  • This one goes with me to heaven...

  • hëy_Í_fÉEl_sÓ_lòÑËlý_tõdaÿ

  • @BabyyayRosiaaj769 maybe its cuz you type like that -__-

  • You are a splendid butterfly. It is your wings that make you beautiful.

  • The Shield brought me here. Even though, it was a long time ago, I still remember it.

  • @chim55 ... yeah me too (the shield)

  • Great montage, suits the song beautifully.

  • nice song..

  • cupid and psycho.

  • Good, but I much prefer Tom Milsom's Game Boy version :P

  • 38 idiots missed the like button.

  • I will forever consider this little song to be one of the best love songs ever written. I bet when I'm old, I'll hear this song again, and fondly recall all the moments this song has captured so succinctly. Hey, I bet Stephin Merritt wrote a song about THAT, too. What a guy.

  • Instant favourite!

  • ……. Magnificent … Instant facebook re-post ~ (•8-D

  • pewp

  • pay in pain

  • Be honest, love stirs up more emotion than EVEN death. Love can and has filled my head so completely there was no room for any other thoughts. And I have said all those little words to no avail. Haven't you? Best song ever of broken relationship. The best expression in song of what we have all felt at one time. Brilliant.

  • robman8855 The guy singing is LD Beghtol , info from wikipedia , 69 love songs

  • @sheepgate1

  • 1:28... cat drop?

  • who is singing?

  • if I sang this to a girl this well, she better start taking off my clothes as soon I'm done, otherwise I wouldn't want anything to do with her

  • I wish I were a boy, so I could write songs like this for my girlfriend. ♥

  • @bluesheep14

It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, both can write songs about heartbreak.

  • @bluesheep14 Why would you want to write a breakup song for your girlfriend?

  • Comment removed

  • re: the two comments below... absolutely. this song is completely inseparable from heartbreak.

  • aww... i'm sorry myra. i had the same scenario. my ex bf sent me few of magnetic fields songs to tell me how he was feeling. the lyrics felt as if my bf wrote it, i know that what magnetic fields is talking about is what he was feeling. we stopped talking as well. he says it's just too difficult for him to listen to my voice. i think maybe it is for the best.

  • I feel that this song is so beautiful, but at the same time it's really bleak. When Stephen sings "And I could make you pay and pay," or "I could make you rue the day" the only thing that runs through my mind is that no, no he actually can't.

It sounds like the singer is so heartbroken or hurt that he says things just to say them, and the truest line he speaks is "it doesn't matter what I do."

  • @mamawobo Actually the person who sings this, I believe, is LD Beghtol, who is a great singer whom I have made the acquaintance. Plays with the Moth Wranglers and a few other bands now :)

  • @mamawobo

By "make you pay" and "Make you rue the day" he means he could lash out and do mean things to her, making her hate him, or he could serenade her with sweet music. It doesn't matter though, because neither end of the spectrum will bring her back to him.

  • @theslyder Well Said

  • @theslyder him, not her. HIM. this song is written for a man, by a man. which makes it more beautiful.

  • @nauticalnun

How does that make it MORE beautiful? It holds the same significance and beauty whether it's written for a man or a woman. The gender of either party doesn't affect its meaning. It could be seen from the view point of a man for a woman, woman for a man, man for man, or woman for woman, and it would still be a great message.

  • @theslyder well of course, in a general sense, and merritt has written songs for women, and by women, equally beautiful. what i mean about this particular song, is that you cannot deny it's infused with the recognizable speech/feelings/emotional idendity of this particular homosexual guy that's saying those words.

  • @mamawobo A song with a similar sort of sentiment is Pink Glove by Pulp. Jarvis Cocker has a brilliant talent for making the sleazy and decadent sound desperate and heartfelt. if you haven't heard it you should check it out.

  • @mamawobo I think you're totally missing the point by over-analyzing this song instead of feeling it. It has deep resonance bcs this is part of the human condition in an intense relationship; having the power to hurt someone deeply bcs they still care for you, yet being unable to keep them bcs the relationship is no longer what it was . "it doesn't matter what I do" relates to the knowledge he has that he is powerless to get her back.

  • @mamawobo I think he has it in him to do exactly what he says he can...

  • @mamawobo Stephen doesn't sing this

  • @mamawobo We always have the ability to torment and guilt trip our ex lovers, especially if they really care for us. That is the beauty of this song - nobility, acceptance and love. Love for the person who breaks us, and the strength in spirit and heart to absorb the loss and carry on. I don't find this song bleak at all, it is a such a benevolent reflection of the sorrow that walks hand in hand with the joy of love.

  • @TheCoSeek Well put

  • @mamawobo: You are wrong, it is very simpel to make someone rue the day or pay and pay. I left a man who is stalking me now for 18 month. I´m paying with my fear, every day and there are many days I rue :-(

  • but I could never make you stay..

  • long live the shield

  • This song is fucking beautiful. It doesn't need to be tainted with memories of heartbreak, please.

  • @PistachioPistachio haha, have you listened to the lyrics? the song itself is tainted with heartbreak. welcome to planet earth my dear pistachio.

  • @PistachioPistachio That's what it is about. Total and utter heartbreak...

  • Completely forgot the name of this group until a friend just mentioned them. I used to play this song on repeat for hours and hours. Now I probably will again. :D

  • that was too beautiful for all my little words. i'm fucking speachless

  • I played this for My (ex?) girlfriend on my acoustic guitar last night over the phone since last night I been thinking Ill never find someone like her if I lose her. She's the girl of my dreams and thanks to her mom i feel I may be losing her

I'm 19 shes 17 going on 18 in February I'm fighting for her like no man has ever fought for a girl before but sometimes it feels like there's a force in the world that tries to test each of us individually and I may need help

  • @MassiveBlur23 3 years from now you'll change your mind. i've been where you are man. i know.

  • I swear this song is about me, though I am sure it's not, I am sure all my ex's feel like this. I am unboyfriendable.

  • great song but the quality could be a wee bit better!

  • One of the best. Beautiful tune

  • apo ta kalytera tragoudia.lalala

  • What the hell!? How could anyone dislike this song!?

And tobber, if you don't like what she says, then get over it. Don't comment back being rude to her, there's no need for that, just accept what she says and move on.
