I just saw the movie, and it was cool to see him play a character that's so completely different from what everyone is used to seeing. The movie is definitely not a comedy, by any means.

There are some crazy characters. Like, seriously disturbed characters. But not funny characters.

He plays a man that is so insane and angry, but still vulnerable at the same time. That's not anything like what he usually plays, so it was an interesting change of pace.

I'm not keen on bubblegum cinema (Seth Rogan films, Ben Stiller films etc) being compared to classic seventies cinema. It validates the soul-less "home improvement" quality mainstream plapp churned out by today's studios. For Seth to compare his film to Taxi Driver is like Miley saying she'll destroy Radiohead. On a positive note, love Scene Stealers. You fill the void left by Siskel and Ebert. I'd really love to see you discuss film topics (like the great Cinefiles - also a must see).

An interesting point you bring up, but--having seen "Observe and Report"--I can tell you it is anything but "mainstream plapp." His character does have the same issues as a Rupert Pupkin or Travis Bickle. Now, does it have the depth of those characters or movies? Absolutely not. It's just an excuse for strange/shocking jokes. I'm happy that at least they were thinking about something different when they made this film. It could have been "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" after all.
