@Mr1997kawasaki Irish fighting for Mexico???? No, didn't happen. Not at the Alamo. All Mexican troops were from Mexican Army batallions and some militia. All Mexican Natonals. There WERE several Irish fihting with Aamo defnders.I will have tocheck but I tink Ireland and England are the claimed countries of origin that suppied the most defenders.
@itelluwhat1 The Alamo defenders had some Kentucky rifles, which were very accurate and had a range of about 200 yards. The Mexican Army had British Muskets, the Brown Bess, which fired about 3 to 5 balls at once; it's range was only about 75 yards.
mexico wins this battle but not the war and around 5 years after the alamo battle mexico gets its ass handed to it on a plate by the US in the mexican-american war

Facts: The Battle of the Alamo was at night, not during the day, the Mexican army raided at approximately 5:30 am, the battle lasted no more than 40 min. They spared the lives of women, children and slaves, people of color at that time to be on Mexican soil were free citizens. Unlike the Alamo defenders who liked even slavery. During the battle only took 3 people from what was Texas, all other Americans were supporters of slavery, those are your herores ...
@YOWAZUP84 Actually, yeah! They had grenades in the 700's, but they aren't the grenades you are used to. The "hand grenade" you are used to developed in the 1500's.
it truly is one of the most spectacular battle sequences in all cinema, right up there with the final charge from the Errol Flynn CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, and the deploying of the roman legions against Kirk Douglas' SPARTACUS and his slave army! if only they made more movies like this, the classic way, with THIS sort of cinematography, actors, music, and authenticity of action scenes.
who gives a crap about historical inaccuracy this movie is absolutely awesome! I love how crockett goes out with a boom at the end... just a careless "f**k em all" toss of the torch and BOOM!!!! LOL Classic John Wayne <3
@EPSGplayer actually, that kinda was taken from history, but completely loosely depicted in the film. in reality, when the mexicans stormed into the chapel, a gunner tried to set the powder magazine on fire with a torch. but the mexicans shot him and it wasn't crockett.
Davy Crocket was not killed during the fight in the Alamo. Him and a few other Texans survived but were later killed, Santa Anna ordered his men to kill every single person that survived and then he burned all their bodies.
Every indication says that Crockett was killed immediately during the battle of the Alamo.
What you are referring to is the few scraglers that were in the out lining barracks found after the battle. Santa Anna's own chef, as well as Mrs. Dickinson reported that Crockett was within feet of the Alamo chapel, Mrs. Dickinson saying that his body was "mutilated". The chef said " I seen the great Crockett himself, lying with a soldier on atop of him"
@GaussTruth yes, but the room where he was in was adjacent to the chapel, and it is a proven fact that the prisoners were led out of the room IN FRONT OF THE CHAPEL (exactly where crockett's body was found) and mutilated with swords. crockett was one of them. there were several mexican eyewitnesses to this.
Americans have had to squelch tyranny from time to time, Texas is no different. The victors get to write the history. What has messyco done since? Becoming beholden to the drug cartels is hardly a sign of progress.
Kepler.. the first thing these "Americans" did when they received land in Texas was...yes, they swore the Mexican Nation and became Mexican Citizens, when these people declared Texas Independence they where Mexicans, even in your country when you attack your army you are a traitor, you can`t deny this... and remember one thing, slavery is not just an argument as you think Santa Anna is, YOUR COUNTRY WAS BUILT OVER SLAVERY, and all the world know that, tell me the origin of american Civil war...
@bodeguero007 If they were Mexican citizens how come they received trials without a jury and had almost no representation in the government? Santa Anna was the president but acted like a dictator. They didn't like being under Mexican rule after they saw what it was. Yes the U.S. was built on slavery but it was a topic when the Bill of Rights was made. The slaves weren't the main reason for the Civil War. Southerners didn't want to be part of the Union because Lincoln was an antiexpansionist.
@drnogood59 The only people who had NO ONE representation were black and indians in three centuries in the US, they were not considered citizens( sometimes not even human). I really do not understand how a person can defend a policy that decided to do this: A black= someone to exploit....A mexican= someone to dispossess....An indian= someone to exterminate, exploit, and dispossess..... And finally I agree with you....Lincoln was an antiexpansionist, of southern slavery governments like in Texas

@GotNoBrained - If you're going to do a movie about history, then you damn well better get the facts straight- especially the part about Fannin. Texans also take their history very seriously.
Slavery was so successfully introduced in Texas for these inmigrants, that they defend it in the American Civil War 30 years later, right? Historic facts not always are what governments tell us in books. Santa Anna was a dictator sick of glory, and these new Texans were fighting for their freedom (to have slaves working this land, as they did).....All these facts are in the Bill of Rights or "Constitution" of Mexico from 1821, and in Texan from 1936. Isn´t really easy to understand this war?
• Before 1810, Spain let some inmigrants from USA to stablish in Texas as inmigrants, the land properties were huge, but this inmigrants wanted to bring slaves from Africa ( like all USA Southern States, where they came from). Slavery was forbidden when Mexico got independent in 1821, and Texas was part of Mexico. So this inmigrants understood that if they wanted to bring back slavery, being part of Mexico would be impossible. When Texas became independent in 1836 slavery started.
No Santa Anna made himself a dictator backed by the military and the American immigrants did not sign up for that and were not about kiss the feet of a tyrant. Many other the places in Mexico revolted at the same time, not just Texas, against Santa Anna. Those included, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Yucatán, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. You are only trying to use the slavery argument, bad as slavery was, to justify your dictator.
Santa Anna didn't even come close to Napoleon. "The little corporal" could kick his Arse in battle. They were held off by civilians for ages. Even with superior artillery, cavalry, and rank upon rank of infantry, they could not be bested. Well, not for a long time.
Were were sure as shit giving back the 1/5th of your national citizens who live in the USA illegally..better open a few more pinata factories to accommodate them.
@GringoHunter No problem send them back plz! ohhh and by the way we will kick out the over 1 million of ur citizens living in my country because they cant retire and live a decent life in ur country on there S.S. checks and that way we will free a ton of medical low cost or some times free services intendead for Mexicans and been suck by ur fellow americans...so i guess we will send them back inside a pinata hu??
Actually, the final assault on the Alamo happened at the break of day.
According to the Mexican irregulars, on that morning, they were awakened at 4:30 AM in the morning to start the procedure to form, and at 5:30 AM thereabouts, given the command to advance, The plan was for the initial assault to take place in the early morning twilight, with the major thrust, at the break of day.
This was ( according to accounts ) exactly what happened.
they did have grenades back then, but they weren't the "pull the pin" style we have today, really they were mini cannonballs....Napoleonic ones were anyway
One thing about the battle of the Alamo, it was figured that for every one defender that was killed, 15 to 20 Mexican soldiers paid with their life. The defenders bled Santa Anna's Army, that is probably why he lost at San Jacinto.
@confederatecharlie Hahaha You made me laugh... This is an american version of how the Alamo war was from gringo's point of view... The real history, says that David Crocket and the americans with him, were slaughtered cruely and easly by Mexican steel! Trust me, it was horrible... Like if you put a bunch of rats ina blender...
@sinnerommie Yeah it says that in YOUR guy'ses history but we are the ones that really slaughtered you. If we lost you guys would still have your land..
@oblivionfan150 It was because, the american or texans troops captured Santa Anna while he was sleeping... dummass... well, and during that battle, Santa Anna lost a leg tho, and was captured by the texas, then the coward-ladybug-homo-fag of Santanna, was afraid of dead, so he exchanged his life for all Texas territory, then the yankees came after a few years and got advantage of the war he had with france, and stole Califronia, Nuevo Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado... well d' half of Mexico
@oblivionfan150 And also, his was begun because the Texans refused to free their slaves they had. In Mexico, slavism was Ilegal, we all were free! true land of freedom, while in the US, americans slaved Negritos and Irish :( ... The Mexican cause was pure, Texans cause was pure greed!
@sinnerommie All that Billy Bob Thorton movie was based on the Fake De la Pena Diary which unfortunately was donated to the State Of Texas. It has the line "Crimes against Humanity" all through it which wasn't used until the 30's. Experts have now determined its a FAKE! Suzanna Dickenson, Capt. Dickenson's wife, was an eye witness of Crockett and men who fought to the death. The Mayor of San Antonio at that time was an eye witness who said the same thing. "Fought to the Death!"
Loved this film ever since I was a kid...Awesome battle scenes, great music. sadly, it flopped as a movie and won only a one Oscar (sound)...would have won more if Chill Wills (supporting actor nominee) hadn't blown his own horn so much, basically naming himself as the best actor of the year etc etc. prior to the oscars. Needless to say that put voters off (and undoubtedly pissed John Wayne off too!) Some trimming here and there esp. with preachy dialogue & it would've been an all time great!
Assault began at 0530hrs, ended about 0700hrs. Fought under the Mexican "1824" flag. This battle originally had nothing to do with "The fight for Texas liberty". Remember, Stephen F Austin told Houston he was a Mexican Citizen and was not fighting for a texas Republic. Neither were the defenders of The Alamo, but for the 1824 mexican constitutional rights for the common man. Santa Anna was trying to ursurp those rights. The declaration for a Republic of Texas came 4 days b4 The Alamo fell.
just to make sure.. did he break his sword because he did not want to surrender it to santa anna? because wasnt it traditional back then for the losing commander to give his sword to the winning side?
@TheDonVito17 Traditionally the looser offers his sword to the winner, if however he breaks his sword during battle. He is saying,"screw you, No surrender". Throwing the broken sword waqs spite, it was saying," here is my sword you bastards, now come and take me."
@powerdriller10 And I'm sure that the lines didn't fall as easily as you see at 1:00 Makes it look more like a comedy reel than an attempt at accuracy.
Remember The Alamo! 175 Years Ago Today!!!! And God Bless all who died and John Wayne for making this most Excellent and accurate movie about our Texas History! Pete
@SuperRAINONE Yes please REMEMBER it and never forget! that we killed you and we won the battle! and please calling this movie accurate!!! ha ha ha what else do you belive is accurate GI JOE VS COBRA and saving the good and heroic U.S.A.!...HA HA u guys are sooo brainedwash
@GringoHunter Hey Gringo Hunter, Mexicans fought alongside Gringos at the Alamo to gain their independence from Mexico and Dictator Santa Anna...... Get it?........Your right, you killed us real bad at the Alamo but we had our day at San Jacinto! ! While your in the joint, get some books on Texas and Mexican history and read them, por favor!
And last but not least we didn't steal Texas, we bought it from Mexico!
@SuperRAINONE Those we only a few Mexican traitors that joined the Pirates, the Americans were welcome immigrants from the U.S. they were given land and they could work it and live of the land, but they had a problem they did no like that we in Mexico were against slavery, so they revolted..thats the fact! And im not in Jail im in my office in Mexico and i live in Mexico, and get this true ur big fucking head while your in that Starbucks ...I am NOT anti AMERICAN
@GringoHunter actually that big freakin' jerkhead idiotic santa anna had to come on the scene and start telling the texans how to live their lives. he lusted after power. one of his quotes was, "Were I made God, I would wish to be something more." his cruelty was so strong, a good percentage of the alamo defenders were mexican rebels against santa anna.
7:09 YouTube video: The Battle of The Alamo on March 6, 1836; from The Alamo (USA 1960), Directed by John Wayne, Soundtrack by Dimitri Tiomkin: Charge of Santa Anna, Death of Davy Crockett, Final Assault.
March 6, 2011: 175th Anniversary of the Fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
of course grenades were around at the at period- and well before...
why do you think some infantry regiments were called Grenadiers even back in the 1770's......The British Grenadier Guards took their ilustrious title following the defeat of the French Imperial Old Guard of which several battalions were Grenadiers at Waterloo in 1815. ( Although it was the Guard De Chassuer that they actually routed thus ending the battle.)
Lol,since when did the Texans had so much black powder that they had to store it up in a magazine? I thought they had very few black powder and Davy Crockett got executed after the battle?
@TheMrSmissen The defenders had a lot of powder and around four firearms per man (from the earlier Bexar battle) giving a huge initial firepower. Orders were given to fire the magazine when overrun to deny yhe munitions to the mexicans. They also had plenty of solid shot for the cannon but not lot of exposive shot or grapeshot.
ON BEHALF OF OZZY OSBOURNE I WOULD LIKE TO SAY SORRY FOR HIM PISSING ON YOUR MONUMENT , HE NEEDED THE TOILET AND THE GARAGE ATTENDENT REFUSED SO HE FOUND A WALL , THATS ALL HE THOUGHT IT WAS ! VERY SORRY
originally it was thought that 180 defenders caused 1500 casualities. but historians now say about 250 defenders caused 600 casualities. santa ana in dispatches said 400 perished. the soldiers who died were the creme of his army and sorely missed later. his staff wanted to use heavy cannon to end the siege, but his ego said no. in the 2004 film he says soldiers are so many chickens, so who cares. in reality he said this after the battle not the night before.
@demeandr121 They were brave men but from day one they had lost. The time bought at the Alamo (and dont forget the defenders did not "hold" the mexicans there - santa anna made that choice) was wasted by Fannin and Houston.
@xxprinceofromexx17 That is actually a Mexican flag, but in the place of the eagle is 1824. It is the flag the Texans flew in reference the to Mexican 1824 constitution which permitted them to settle there.
@bonacman Another thing, one of the scenes I saw on youtube (Not sure if its this one xD), a man was still in his bed when the soldiers marched in. Although he was sort of awake when they came in, since he had a gun to shoot at them with. Not sure if thats an important character though... Is he?
@bonacman Ahh yes, so even if they were used to waking up in the early hours, as I am, their sleeping pattern wouldn't be normal and so they wouldn't have woken up ready.
@bonacman I normally get up at 5:30 to my alarm screaming at me every week day anyways... And thats just for school! Thing is though I've had plenty of time to get used to that, and I do it purposely on week-ends so I don't have a fucked up sleeping pattern on monday.
Back on topic, great scene, I haven't seen the movie but I LOVE war history, so I love this :)
The first type of "Grenade " can be traced back as far as the song dynasty in China between 960-1279 ad, and there is strong evidence they were used in the English civil war against the Welsh at Holt bridge in 1643, so it may be possible that some form of grenade would have been around in 1836.
@demeandr121 sir grenades have been around since the Byzantine Empire in 717 A.D. Byzantine soldiers learned that Greek fire, a Byzantine invention of the previous century, could not only be thrown by flamethrowers at the enemy, but also in stone and ceramic jars. In 1643, it is possible that "Grenados" were thrown amongst the Welsh at Holt Bridge during the English Civil War. In the American Civil War, both sides used hand grenades equipped with a plunger that detonated the device upon impact.
@demeandr121 you're fake! if you ignited gun powder today it would explode at just the same time. back in the day there was a thing called a wick that fit into the ball of explosives and it would take time to burn, say around 4-6 seconds. nowadays grenades have timers in them. you suck
@roteba1 What do you mean during the 2004 movie I could see the battle perfectly they had rockets firing in the air to brighten the battle so Mexican troops can see because of the rockets the audience could see to
Today is the 176th Anniversary of the Fall of the Alamo!

This film, (John Wayne's Alamo) is so full of historical inaccuracies. here are a few.
1 The final attack happened at about 4 -5 Am when it was still dark.
2. Patrick Wayne (Bonham)'s report of Fannin's demise - Fannin and his men were killed AFTER the Alamo fell.
3. Far too many Texans defending the fort.
4. Bowie was almost already dead before he was bayoneted. - never had a "Monster" musket.
5 the powder magazine in the church was never blown up.
and many, many more. it was all crap

One thing about the battle of the Alamo, it was figured that for every one defender that was killed, 15 to 20 Mexican soldiers paid with their life. The defenders bled Santa Anna's Army, that is probably why he lost at San Jacinto.
confederatecharlie 9 months ago
@confederatecharlie Hahaha You made me laugh... This is an american version of how the Alamo war was from gringo's point of view... The real history, says that David Crocket and the americans with him, were slaughtered cruely and easly by Mexican steel! Trust me, it was horrible... Like if you put a bunch of rats ina blender...
sinnerommie 8 months ago
@sinnerommie Yeah it says that in YOUR guy'ses history but we are the ones that really slaughtered you. If we lost you guys would still have your land..
oblivionfan150 8 months ago
@oblivionfan150 It was because, the american or texans troops captured Santa Anna while he was sleeping... dummass... well, and during that battle, Santa Anna lost a leg tho, and was captured by the texas, then the coward-ladybug-homo-fag of Santanna, was afraid of dead, so he exchanged his life for all Texas territory, then the yankees came after a few years and got advantage of the war he had with france, and stole Califronia, Nuevo Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado... well d' half of Mexico
sinnerommie 8 months ago
@oblivionfan150 And also, his was begun because the Texans refused to free their slaves they had. In Mexico, slavism was Ilegal, we all were free! true land of freedom, while in the US, americans slaved Negritos and Irish :( ... The Mexican cause was pure, Texans cause was pure greed!
sinnerommie 8 months ago
Damn, I misspelled some words, I meant. "This war begun"
sinnerommie 8 months ago
@sinnerommie I don't see anything about that in your comment.... What are you talking about? lol
oblivionfan150 8 months ago

@TheDonVito17 That's a good explanation. I was wondering why he broke his sword.
GroupKB 11 months ago
@TheDonVito17 Traditionally the looser offers his sword to the winner, if however he breaks his sword during battle. He is saying,"screw you, No surrender". Throwing the broken sword waqs spite, it was saying," here is my sword you bastards, now come and take me."

Yes, there is a much lack of historical exactness in this renactment of the Siege of The Alamo. The most notable lack of accuracy are:
1) The final assault was at night time in darkness not day time.
2) The mexican artillery was not used to protect the infantry, in darkness was not point.
3) The mexican artillery shown in the enactment is much better than the one the mexes had.
4) Cavalry Lancers are not used to attack a walled fortification, it is absurd! Wayne was wide off in this.
powerdriller10 11 months ago
@powerdriller10 And I'm sure that the lines didn't fall as easily as you see at 1:00 Makes it look more like a comedy reel than an attempt at accuracy.

@GringoHunter actually that big freakin' jerkhead idiotic santa anna had to come on the scene and start telling the texans how to live their lives. he lusted after power. one of his quotes was, "Were I made God, I would wish to be something more." his cruelty was so strong, a good percentage of the alamo defenders were mexican rebels against santa anna.

why do you think some infantry regiments were called Grenadiers even back in the 1770's......The British Grenadier Guards took their ilustrious title following the defeat of the French Imperial Old Guard of which several battalions were Grenadiers at Waterloo in 1815. ( Although it was the Guard De Chassuer that they actually routed thus ending the battle.)

Lol,since when did the Texans had so much black powder that they had to store it up in a magazine? I thought they had very few black powder and Davy Crockett got executed after the battle?
TheMrSmissen 1 year ago
@TheMrSmissen The defenders had a lot of powder and around four firearms per man (from the earlier Bexar battle) giving a huge initial firepower. Orders were given to fire the magazine when overrun to deny yhe munitions to the mexicans. They also had plenty of solid shot for the cannon but not lot of exposive shot or grapeshot.

originally it was thought that 180 defenders caused 1500 casualities. but historians now say about 250 defenders caused 600 casualities. santa ana in dispatches said 400 perished. the soldiers who died were the creme of his army and sorely missed later. his staff wanted to use heavy cannon to end the siege, but his ego said no. in the 2004 film he says soldiers are so many chickens, so who cares. in reality he said this after the battle not the night before.

@25vih If we r cowards, why would 180 men go up against 4,000?
demeandr121 1 year ago
@demeandr121 They were brave men but from day one they had lost. The time bought at the Alamo (and dont forget the defenders did not "hold" the mexicans there - santa anna made that choice) was wasted by Fannin and Houston.

@bonacman Another thing, one of the scenes I saw on youtube (Not sure if its this one xD), a man was still in his bed when the soldiers marched in. Although he was sort of awake when they came in, since he had a gun to shoot at them with. Not sure if thats an important character though... Is he?
angryboy2k9 1 year ago
@bonacman Ahh yes, so even if they were used to waking up in the early hours, as I am, their sleeping pattern wouldn't be normal and so they wouldn't have woken up ready.

At 4:40, that is fake!!! They had no grenades back then. If you tryed to light gunpowder it would explode right in your face!!!
demeandr121 1 year ago
@demeandr121
The first type of "Grenade " can be traced back as far as the song dynasty in China between 960-1279 ad, and there is strong evidence they were used in the English civil war against the Welsh at Holt bridge in 1643, so it may be possible that some form of grenade would have been around in 1836.
SAYLEMAN 1 year ago
@demeandr121 sir grenades have been around since the Byzantine Empire in 717 A.D. Byzantine soldiers learned that Greek fire, a Byzantine invention of the previous century, could not only be thrown by flamethrowers at the enemy, but also in stone and ceramic jars. In 1643, it is possible that "Grenados" were thrown amongst the Welsh at Holt Bridge during the English Civil War. In the American Civil War, both sides used hand grenades equipped with a plunger that detonated the device upon impact.
1Historygenius 1 year ago
@demeandr121 you're fake! if you ignited gun powder today it would explode at just the same time. back in the day there was a thing called a wick that fit into the ball of explosives and it would take time to burn, say around 4-6 seconds. nowadays grenades have timers in them. you suck
GoldwinTime 1 year ago
@GoldwinTime Well excuse me. I didn't know that!!!
demeandr121 1 year ago
The actual final assault on the Alamo happened at night, and this was shown in the 2004 film version.
The downside, of course, was that the audience couldn't see much of what was happening.
John Wayne had the good sense to shoot his final battle in broad daylight. Not Historically accurate, but far more cinematic!

@roteba1
The battle of the Alamo did not happen "at night"
The battle of the Alamo happened at the "crack of dawn"
The idea was for the .the Mexican troops to arrive at the
base of the Alamo compound proper before dawn so that the
Mexican irregulars could make their assault upon the compound
at about the break of day. The final climatic fight of the Alamo happened
at about the break of day.
