  • absolutely brilliant. your video inspired me to learn even harder.i hope i'll be able to play like that someday^^

Thank you very much for the tutorial.

  • IVE BEEN AN AUDIO ENGINEER FOR 16 YRS... I LOVE THAT BASS SOUND..

  • I didn't Edward Norton was a bassist

  • hi zuma

why don't you try this magnific bassiline?

"perchè non sei una mela?" An old italian song by Lucio Battisti...

  • I don't know how to slap correctly but I want to play this awesome song !

Thanks for playing it correctly ! GG !

  • I've heard the song only a month ago and it blew me away, and now I find you explaining it in detail. Thank you very much for the tutorial, and much like a lot of people here, I like your version more.

  • @StealthHR - Thank you thank you!!!

  • Right on brother. Badass bassline.

  • thats is my favorite part in the song especially the beginging it sounds so cool.

  • Hi there, just a few questions, I've been playing bass for a year and a bit now, so I'm getting there. Got a Fender P bass, what I really want to know is how to slap like this and get this tone. I have a dual band compression pedal, multi effects pedal, so it must be possible.

Also, slapping technique, I cant get right.

    Any advice? =]

  • @emperorgrant - I don't think a stock Fender P is going to get you this type of slap tone. You really need a Jazz bass or a Stingray. I dig the P-bass slap tone but it doesn't sound like that's what you're after. No amount of pedals will give you the sound of a dual pickup bass or a Stingray. The Wal bass is out of reach for most!!!

  • honestly, i like your "hybrid" version better than the actual bass line.

  • @draciel80 - Thank you! It's just kind of the way I always heard it in my head.

  • I agree you are inspiring-- my husband will love watching this! Thanks for posting!

  • Awesome! A tue gem!!! Pleasure to listen to!!!

  • Great work Zuma. Really appreciate the slowed down version, explanation of the hammer-ons, thumbing every other note and the quality of the sound.

On another note, have you done tutorial of Girls on Film yet. Planet Earth was truly marvelous.

A very happy Zuma fan :)

  • @tarp2009 - You're welcome! No, I haven't made a tutorial for Girls on Film yet. I will someday but right now I am really struggling just to put new videos out. I hope to have something new up next weekend. Stay tuned!

  • I think you are great ,keep up the good work. you are very inspiring. and thank you for sharing. God Bless You : Peace ; from Connecticut

  • gives more respect to the ridiculous bass line in that song, funky as a mother fucker. Only stevie ray vaughn could play that shit and sing at the same time

  • Impressed.

  • yo man, well done... no offense though but you know that you're not actually playing Nick's bassline right?

I have the actual transcription of it from Bass Player magazine. Yours is still really good and that G&L sound is amazing.

If you want, PM me on TalkBass and I can e-mail you the actual sheet music to the bass line to this song.

  • @groovinonfunk - 10-4 on that brother. If you read the description I do point that out. What I am playing is more of a hybrid between the bass and the "synth bass" lines. Of course, somebody sent me the transcription AFTER I had recorded the video! Ha! Good looking out though man. I appreciate it. It's also worth noting that it doesn't seem like Nick plays it exactly like his own transcription live. My guess is singing and playing it is a huge bitch so he adjusts accordingly. He's a monster!

  • @zumazmusic yeah man, you did a great job! i feel stupid... should have read the description first, my bad. i dont usually pay attention to those for some reason.

  • I stumbled onto your vid here because I was always a fan of this song. The way you break this track down to its funky essence is amazing and very much accomplished! Pure joy,my friend! Great work!!!

  • @progrockman - Thank you!

  • Excellent work.....great deciphering and teaching of an amazing bass line! Thanks!

  • that bass line has always inspired me!

  • Man your bass sounds so nice, Nice job!~

  • fucking awesome!

  • FUNKY !

  • you killed that shit man...awesome job

  • Seriously incredible job!! I was smiling all the way through and just imagining how hard this is to learn.

  • Another excellent job! Nick Beggs is a very underrated bassist. I've only started listening to Kajagoogoo and I got to tell ya - I underestimated these guys. This tune, and just about all the other ones, are cheesier than a limburger warehouse, but the bass lines Beggs does are great. Again, you did a great job and I thank you for sharing this with us. Keep on jammin!

Any chance you can post a video of you playing "Ooh To Be Ah"?

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !!!!!!!!! Love your Bass Playing and the bass line of that song too!!!! Always wanted to learn how to play it but knew it wouldn't be an easy one to take on! Your G&L is awesome!! And it sounds GREAT!! I have an '84 L 2000 !!

  • Nice playing, Mate!! Although i love (mainly) rock and metal, i have always loved this band (no, really), and i think Nick (Tim, Lol!!) Beggs is a MONSTER bassist!! I love the guy!! Again, nice playing! Nice tone, too... \m/ (:o)

  • I always loved this bass line! I'll have to look up Beggs and check out some of his other work.

  • Wow you're a genius! I just got a bass guitar yesterday, and first song I want to learn on it is this one by kajagoogoo

  • Very impressive !

  • Flipping heck, this being the first time I've ever seen anyone play it, its far more complicated than I ever realised. Its an awesome bass line and such a tune, blew me away back in 1982 and still sounds amazing today. One of those rarely made tracks that has a bass line that stands out on its own by a massive distance with nothing close to it for comparison. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  • @redhillboogie - You're telling me! I almost backed out of it when I began to learn it. It was worth it in the end, though. Like I said in the video, can you imagine playing this bass line AND singing. Crazy Nick is a monster.

  • This is awesome!

  • amazing as usual zuma!

  • I love the way you effortlessly segue between all these different playing styles and types of attack to get all the different tones in the song. Nicely done.

  • @charles1967 - I really appreciate you noticing that. There is so much tonal variance in just putting your fingers in the right place with the right touch. I really try to stress that to other players.

  • @zumazmusic Exactly. The buttery tone from the pad of your fingers, the snap from the side of the thumb or the pop, and the way you change your right hand position to be closer to the bridge or the fretboard. People should watch your right hand and they'd learn a lot. Like I said... nicely done.

  • Sounds like you have modded your G&L bass, right? Are you using the outer coils of each pickup? How Jazz-Bass-like can you get with this in terms of sound?

  • @levito82 - You are 'almost' right! I AM playing the outer coils but this bass is NOT modded. It is a special run of L2000's WITH single switching from the factory. So, my front toggle switch is single coils, series and parallell. Google "BABP L-2000 LE." Cool, huh?

  • Wow, that's a true rarity! You've got 1 of 22 built? Nice thick sound. I'd like to own the one 5-string version - Google CLF49165 ;)

  • Thank you Zuma for playing this and posting it on youtube. Your efforts are greatly appreciated....

  • I played that one on an alembic back in the 80's in the bars, it is not an easy bass line to follow. You do a great job trying to follow his style!! He uses a very fast combination of fingering the notes and rapid slap and pop.

We can't all be the best, but you have my respect for giving it your best.

  • Watch out Zuma...I'm comin with the 1980 SB...I'll be able to play this song in about 2 more years maybe :)

  • I'm back, gotta get my Zuma fix every now and then. lol I miss the 80's! it was a great time to be alive. So much new music, new influences. Music changed in the 80's. Some will never get the credit for the genious they brought to the stage. Sad, but some of us will not forget.

  • DAMN!! I love bass playing and even if you made mistakes it still ROCKED HARD!!! NICE JOB!!!!! You have my respect!! Check out other STRONG bass players like Level 42 and Red Hot Chili Peppers!

  • Thats such a great line, real similar to the outro bass riff in Love Spreads by Stone Roses.

  • I still say you are the best bassist on youtube! I'd love to hang out with you and try to pick up on some of the magic. lol

  • Well thanks hallman321! I really appreciate it.

  • Here is a hint for people requesting the tabs.

USE your PAUSE & PLAY Buttons.

Follow Zuma as he is playing.

Break the song down into its parts.

    Intro- Verse-Chorus- Bridge- etc....

Follow him as he is playing. Use your Ears to help you out as you go along.

You are not going to learn anything by having someone else do the work.

  • Well spoken djazz33. Can you post this at every one of my videos, every 10 posts? :+)

  • if u just played it, and put up a tab in the description, it woud of been easier. anyone with me on that?

  • Great stuff

  • i ALWAYS love the bass on Too shy

  • Its awesome...great..cant describe...the feeling of hearing that bass flow is just wonderfull...your the man!!!

  • dude! you're fucking amazing!!!

  • Zuma, you are the man! I've watched all you vids. Damn, I love this! WOW!

  • Wow, one never really listened to the bass player when these songs first came out. Now I have a new found respect for their talent. Much respect to you also. Great work.

  • Good Bass Playing! One of my Favorite songs...that bass part was sweet!

  • sick!

  • Very impressed with your videos. You are quite talented. Nick Beggs would be proud.

  • That's a sick bass line. Who knew THAT was going on in that song. Always liked the song but who knew a guy with a haircut like that could play like that?

  • The point is, the abilities of *many* 80ies pop music artists were totally underrated because of the blinding flamboyant fashion and style those days. Howard Jones ("What is love?") is another example: classical piano education at a music academy, writing highly sophisticated tunes - and I just found him cool and danced. :-)

  • u should tab this or tell us where the tab Beggs wrote himself can be found

  • Just e-mail me. Go to my home page and follow the links!

  • nice job man, sweet bass line i agree. thanks for the tutorial!

  • Damn!

  • Awesome mate. Youve inspired me!

  • nice bass line!! very well played too. think i have to put paul youngs wonderland ahead for the 80's, but thats pino so all bets are off. great job.

  • tim beggs tim beggs b fucked lol good job though m8 loved it cool playing.

  • awesomeee :D

  • Bassist to bassist, well done. That's a fucking tough line to play.

  • ..."retarder"?

Anyway, nice bass work!! Really great song too, of course!

  • That's awesome!! I'm going to have to learn this!

    Thanks for posting! Great job!

  • great bass playing to a classic eighties hit!

  • robertbowen: For me this is all about having fun and inspiring others. If your inspiration is absolute perfection, then my videos are not for you.

Furthermore, "groove" is subjective. The terms "behind (and ahead of) the beat" were coined for a reason. Listen to Sly and the Family Stone's Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin). Larry is behind the beat in places yet it's still a great track. I'm not comparing myself to Larry. I'm just saying not much playing is "perfect" as you describe it.

  • sorry zu, but guys like roberto are pricks. i love what u do, and i listen to your save a prayer lesson damn near every day. i only knew hlt wolf by DD b4 I saw you. Do what u do and dont respond to guys who run that pie hole. hey what RnB bass lines do you like, i would love to see you do one. joe tex maybe lol "dont wanna bump no mo wit no big fat woman". is the bomb. late

  • Hey robertbowen, how about a video response since you're so damn good....

  • Thanks for the support. Honestly, I don't want anyone getting discouraged because someone like that comes along. Life can be hard enough sometimes. Let's just do our best and learn from our mistakes. The results (and the fun) will come.

  • Absolut genial!!! Du hast es echt drauf. Ich krieg gar nicht genug davon. Respect!!!

  • ooommggggg. is that harry potter i see back thereeeeeee!??

  • Why yes, it is. We have since replaced those chairs with a couch, though, so Harry is somewhere else in the house now.

  • i didn't realize how cool the bass was to this song until i heard this

  • dude u murdered that! inspiring

  • Thanks so much for this effort. Truly inspiring! I'm going to "try" to nail this line but suspect it will take some serious dedication and time to master it. Love your other vids as well! Keep 'em coming!

  • dude this has to be the best bass video on all of youtube awesome 5 stars

  • haha - wow - I'm inspired and depressed all at the same time.

  • That was fantastic!!

  • Come on Mick Karn lets see your version.

  • fantastic !

There is also a very interesting bass line in the Captain Sensible hit called " WOT"..could you please play it one day ?

    Thanx

  • Great stuff.

  • Good shit, you killed that shit, 5 thumbs up

  • awesome!!

  • cool!

  • Dude, you freaking rock! This was my fave song from the 80's and the bass run was the reason why. I don't play but I'm drooling! This rocks, keep up the great work!

  • Cool as F**K,

I love Nick's playing, he's a top bloke too if you ever meet him.

This is great, you've done this so well, hats off to you and thanks for posting.

  • great job on this I have been playing for 25 years and can see your a great bass player... fun to listen to and your timing is great with the album

  • This was one of my all-time favorite bass lines. Been playing for 20+ years, and never could nail it. Thanks for the help!!!

  • Zuma You totally rule. You are an inspiration to all of us SB1000 survivors from the 80's. Your pal The Hammer

  • good job bro

  • Nice job mate!!

  • Nicely done. By the way, transcriptions are available from Nick himself.

The Intro was played solely on one string, that was his trick.

  • Wow man, I have to say you are a really good teacher. I learned Too shy, A View to A Kill, and Rio all in one day. I have to say though, this one was rather tricky. Keep up the good work, its teachers like you that inspire others to learn slap. I am one of those people. You should learn Ooh to Be Ah off of the same White Feathers album. Some other guy on Tube plays it but he doesn't explain it... at all. Keep the vid's coming dude.

  • I loveee how this sounds.

    ps.youre pretty cute.

  • man your a genius, BIG fan of 80's bass right here! Ever hear the midnight remix of this song?

  • I believe that I have heard it but I am not 100% sure.

  • Rico you eliteist douchebag. Cut the man some space this isn't "rock school". I hope you can back up your words wrote a pretty big check, lets see if you can sign it.

  • Dude, Rico was just him a little Constructive Criticism

  • Zuma can speak for himself to be sure, but who with any class would cut down someones efforts then not post a reply video with his note-on rendition, oh yeah with the singing too. Well god damn already!

  • rico, this was never intended to be the end-all be-all of Nick's bass line. I'm just having fun with it playing it my way. I am glad you're picking up your bass again and I would LOVE to hear your version. Seriously, no sarcasm intended. Singing and playing this would be a first on YouTube if you can pull it off.

  • i always thought this was the best 10 second intro to any song

  • edward norton maybe?

  • Did Nick not use a Musicman for this bassline?

  • Per the man himself, he used a Wal bass on the recording (but he did use a Stingray live quite frequently).

  • Great job. One of the most original basslines of all time. How did he think this up?

  • that is magic, thanks for posting it.

  • Great job but the post from ato71 is a little more flowing and in time for the middle section. Still, pretty damn good.

  • Wow! Just listening to this psychedelically groovy song, I never guessed it had such a virtuosic bass line. MAN - just how you play it! I listened to the song again, and I can tell you beat Kaja's bassist on his own ground!

  • cool nice work man

    breathtaking

  • One last thing: See what you can do with the bass part in "One Thing Leads to Another" by the Fixx. It sounds simple but the fingering is unexpected. It's fun to play once you get it. That's all. Thanks.

  • Excellent and Thank you! I could never figure this one out. It's the weirdest bass line in all pop music. My band had to opt not to play this because I couldn't get in the pocket with the bass part. It's like he played it with rubber strings. It's definitely master class so you're one up on me. Never had a problem with John Taylor, Geddy Lee, Mars Cowling, Flea but this one stumped me.

  • Awesome job. I like this song, and the bass line caught my attention the first few times i heard it. Its rather unusual to have a line like this in an 80s pop song i think. You did a good job playing it, and i think your tone is awesome and pretty close to Marcus Miller's tone.

  • Bloody amazing man. Beggsie is bass king.

  • I keep listening to that all the time for months now:) But hey, I was in love with Nick..

  • omg!!!!u r very grea8 player ilike what u did it`s an amaizing >>>damn!!! ilike this song it`s one of da best of 1983

  • omg thats so good:O im okay at bass but omg thats actrully good

  • Truly a masterpiece

  • I cannot play the bass, but i love this wonderful lesson. It makes the bass an interesting instrument to me.

Back in 1983 I tried to find out the notes myself and to play it on the piano.

You have a good feel and a very nice sound!Thank you!

  • tht was amazing.. wish i could play bass :/

  • amazing,..from an old muso!...wish there were more people around like us!..keep well mate!..great playing!.....x

  • Nice feel to the song I like the bass line verry much.

    Thanx for the vid

  • Pretty damn good, bro! Too Shy is one of my faves from the 80s and your baseline is a very good rendition.

  • i saw lamal after he gambeled away a fortune in a casino

he consequently got a movie part with david bowie in labrynth ,, and reformed his gambling

i have a strange feeling he was gambling with andrew riddly ,,,

nick begs was is a great player ,

i think i know the guy who nick beggs saw that made him get a musicmann ..

great lesson for the notes ,,

    t,r.i.p

p,s dont forget the bass player from depech mode

  • sweet

  • Awesome!

  • Zuma - thanks so much for the bass lesson!! This is one I always wanted to know how to play...

  • super

  • I have never heard of Kajagoogoo before I saw this video. However, the moment I heard that bass riff, I have to say that I needed to learn it. Great Job man, your a good teacher and you need keep teaching more lessons. There are a lot more songs out there for aspiring bass players to learn. BASSES RULE!!!

  • I have the Tribute version of that bass. They are great basses!!!!

  • Hiya mate!!!!! Lovely video!! You should do "Frayo" from Kajagoogoo and show us ur mad skills chap!!!! Very good indeed!

  • yesss! Frayo please!

  • I have to credit this song with getting me to wonder "what is that guitar that sounds different and what is that guy doing?" during my younger 80´s days, ha, ha!!! Great lesson, thank you as usual zumaz.

  • That's funny because "what is that guitar that sounds different and what is that guy doing?" is the very thought that made me want to play bass when I heard "Is there something I should know?" for the first time. Nice way to summarize it!

  • freakin awesome work.

That is all I can say!

  • Awesome version! And to think Nick was doing all that slapping and popping while singing the song. That's some serious talent!

  • Well...later in their career (as Kaja) he did sing it but Limahl sang it originally of course. I agree though, Nick can really sing while playing some complicated sh*t!

  • Oh may that is incredible, another one of my all time favorite bass lines. Flea has nothing on Beggs.

  • Thank you for submitting the New Romantic bass tabs I loved these groups as a kid growing up in the "hood" along with the R&B and Nu Wave R&B of Prince and the Revolution and other groups keep em coming!!

  • Again, I'm amazed. Well done! I'm really enjoying these!

  • is there any chance i can get the tabs Beggs wrote?

  • I'm very much sure that Nick recorded this song ( and the whole album) with his Stingray...

  • Hey gordonS2, send me an e-mail and I'll send you the tab with an interview where Nick states it was a Wal bass. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Great work on that thats some unreal bass playing

i was wondering if you could tell me where to find the tab of this from

  • Thanks! Just send me a message and the tab shall be delivered.

  • hi

great work and i love the bass tone.

half way through gertting this right so a big thanks for posting this video.

any chance you can post a video of spandau ballets paint me down?

    keep up the great work.

  • Love it! Let's see some more Kajagoogoo!

  • Nick Beggs I always thought was a very underrated bass player in general! Good on you to try do him full justice :)

  • What kind of Bass guitar are you playing in this video????

  • i'd like to see you try this

  • wow...that's all i can say...you're awesome man...wow

  • Great job bro!
