I would never have a bike that took that many kicks to start. Every dirtbike I ever owned started on the second kick , third kick at the most. If it took more than 3 kicks to get it going I would tear it down and figure out whats wrong with it , most likely carb. problems or a weak ignition. Sometimes just closing up the spark plug gap a little bit can do wonders for easier starting, with absolutely no bad side effects at all.
81 was the last year. My 81 cr 250 ELSINORE has more compression than yours. I raced my bud on his 83 480 and he only had a half a bike on me the whole time til 4th when i passed him

Your dumb two strokes start waaaaaay easier cold than a four and there's a gasket on the cylinder base that prevents your crank case oil being sucked into the piston two strokes have 2 piston rings when a four has 3 because the one let's oil from the crank to the piston two strokes take separate tranny oil with mixed gas duhhhhhhh
Ever wonder how the crank,rod, piston get oil in a 2 stroke? Ever wonder why they dont rev very good or make power cold when a 4 stroke does? The air/premix mixture goes into the crankcase before it gets forced into the cylinder. Once the motor is hot the oil separates and stays down in the crankcase(for the most part) to lube the top/bottom end, while the gas and air goes into the cylinder.
Thats why they dont run well cold. Its trying to burn oil. And thats why you dont rev it hard when cold.

Dont complain about the starting, you can hear the engine turn over several times because of a very good kick technique.
Only thing I wouldn't do is give it that much gas, the fuel doesnt go through the main jet very well when the engine is cold, I'd give it 0/0 to 1/8 gas and only 20kicks with choke on, then choke off and 1/8 throttle, then repeat choke on 1/8 to 1/4 throttle :p
These are techniques from trial and error, almost never i've had to dry/warm the plug.
In case yaw didnt know,old school bikes kick back,i have a 1981 yz465 that did the same thing and it put a hole in my sneaks,but its one of the strongest and fastest bikes made.
there isn't many of those around any more. every one that I know of has the engine in a box with a broken crankcase....(I must know a half dozen people who have one). I guess this was a common problem with the 480, which is why a good case is VERY hard to find.....too bad, It's nice to look at old bikes and ride them once in a while to remember how things were.
@125CRYZ yep the more compression the more power the easier to start my yz250 with a fresh topend barley broke in was reading 235psi, what gives it comprression?? the piston rings of course but after hours of wear the thin coating hard coating on the rings wear off and wear down causing the gap in the ring to get bigger letting more air to go by causing less compression

@IIWARF4REII I had one of these with a new motor that fattened my ankle because the compression was so high. I could get mine started on the 2 kick at the most. Top of the compression cycle and it starts rather easy-if it don't compression back up and bust your foot!

@skillsaw94 air cooled cr500 was known as the ping king, it never ran right even with race gas, gotta have the head machined by an old timer from the days when it was new or just stay away and buy an older 480 or a water cooled cr500

@SarcasmGraphics the honda Elsinore bikes always had left side kick start. that's one thing they were known for along with being some of the most powerful dirtbikes around.

Yeah the old bikes have gear shifter on the right side , brake on the left and kick on the left ..
i dont think i could kick with my left , right is best :)

wow this bike sounds like a bag of nails and the way he starts it look paintful after nearly 2 minutes of letting the kickstart fly up ionto the engine and probably scratch the balls out of it when it finally decides to start it is loud as fuck i pumps out more smoke then i heavy smoker it sounds like a bag of shit the guy looks like he cant ride it for shit. then he rides of and revs it behind the camera and there is a shitty sounding knocking noise then he doesnt care to use the brake. amatuer

how much different are these bikes than the water cooled ones? i might get an 1984 cr500 and some people told me that if i want a really bike to get the water cooled one but a cr500 is a cr500 right?

@skillsaw94 air cooled cr500 was known as the ping king, it never ran right even with race gas, gotta have the head machined by an old timer from the days when it was new or just stay away and buy an older 480 or a water cooled cr500

ya these early 80s bikes were a pain to start especially big bores,need good boots to kick it over ,power was very harsh to much throttle and over backwards you went.
