I remember the day I first heard that song. I was waking up in the morning, with the radio playing low all night, and a new girlfriend sleeping next to me. And i heard that sweet melody, and those strings. I'll never forget that morning. It was magic.
Ah, if I could only be transported to a smokey lounge on the lower east side of NYC circa 1975 with a scotch on the rocks and a pack of smokes.....Tom on the piano, with a porn mag in his pocket and an ashtray overflowing....drinks on me. Thanks for posting this track!
''If I exorcise my devils-my angels might leave too-and when they leave they are so hard to find''- splitaparttheory=god's vengeance-we were all happy once-then the gods became jealous and split us apart at the navel-to seek for our split apart for eternity..
You know, I can never listen to this song without it breaking my heart. It's a really bittersweet view of love. You can try not to care, but you still do; you can try to act so cold, yet your love still shines through. Damn you, Tom, for making me realize that I can still hurt. You jerk!
My first exposure to Tom's music was a St. Louis concert when he opened for Zappa. I was hooked that night.
I've always associated this song with a Ray Charles influence. I really loved this period of Tom's work. I realize you can't be a beatnick forever, and he's done some great stuff up to the present time, but the albums up to and including 'Rain Dogs' are special; a really rich collection of song craft.
His biography, "Lowside of the Road" is well worth the read if you like Tom.
Just heard this on the radio on my way home... I really have to check out more of his early works now after hearing it. I'm already familiar with his 80s stuff and love it, but somehow I past this up.
The evening fell just like a star Left a trail behind You spit as you slammed out the door If this is love we're crazy As we fight like cats and dogs But I just know there's got to be more CHORUS: So please call me, baby Wherever you are It's too cold to be out walking in the streets We do crazy things when we're wounded Everyone's a bit insane I don't want you catching your death of cold Out walking in the rain
And I admit that I ain't no angel I admit that I ain't no saint I'm selfish and I'm cruel but you're blind If I exorcise my devils Well my angels may leave too When they leave they're so hard to find CHORUS So please call me, baby Wherever you are It's too cold to be out walking in the streets We do crazy things when we're wounded Everyone's a bit insane I don't want you catching your death of cold Out walking in the rain
And we're always at each other's throats You know it drives me up the wall But most of the time I'm just blowing off steam And I wish to God you'd leave me Baby I wish to God you'd stay Life's so different than it is in your dreams So please call me, baby Wherever you are It's too cold to be out walking in the streets We do crazy things when we're wounded Everyone's a bit insane I don't want you catching your death of cold Out walking in the rain
You're all very welcome. I absolutely love this song, and I could NOT find anything on Youtube... and you know what they say... if you want something done right :D
