There used to be a series of illustrated children's books about taking figures of speech literally. I forget what it was called, but it was pretty funny when I was 6 years old. Not so funny now.
Yeah, sounds like it. It was all like "mommy says I'm pigeon-toed" and it would show the kid with giant bird's feet. Funny as a kid, but doesn't even seem cute now - just dumb.
First of all it wasn't slang that they were using, they were clearly imitating the literal version of popular american sayings and proverbs. Secondly, since when was slang not a part of our language?
I'm American and I can't even understand what people are trying to say by using weird saying like that sometimes.
