wow im impressed about the quality of the macro video. Ive never heard of that lens before. A snap on lens thats brilliant. What types of lens can it be fitted to? Normal macro shots take forever to shoot.
Thank you. I have used the sigma 90 mm macro and it was really good and cheap, but the problem is always to get closer without having the critters flying away. I have nerver tried macro video before though. Is it an ordinary lens which is converted with the snap on gadget? Or is it a macro lens?
robber flies can be found in singapore (really large ones at sungei buloh). the largest i saw i estimate to be about 35mm. i have caught one at holland road just after it rained. it was about 25mm.
oh and there are MANY species of robber fly that greatly exceed 12mm, an example would be Phellus olgae (australian giant robber fly) at a length of 45mm, only 5mm smaller than an asian giant hornet!
the fly dosent have to carry the hornet anywhere, just sit and eat it on the spot and or outdistance any other hornets that might come along while its feeding.
I dunno about that....a giant hornet is ALOT bigger than a robber fly, no chance. But the fly is badass in it's own way since it takes on a huge range of insects.....with sheer speed.
@AceofDlamonds the robber fly's speed is what gives it the edge over the hornet. all it has to do is land on its back and plunge its probiscis into the hornet's head or abdomen, inject the digestive fluids and its over.
not gonna be easy on a huge, flexible hornet that can decapitate any insect with sharp jaws.
Has a robber fly ever gotten prey that much bigger? no, they have never been recorded doing so. Robbers are oz for oz the best killers probably, but they are no bigger than 12 mm.
@AceofDlamonds there is direct evidence of red footed cannibalflies attempting to prey on ruby throated hummingbirds in south carolina and anecdotal evidence of the Beelzebub Bee-eater killing and consuming another hummer in texas......
@AceofDlamonds and how is a hornet going to decapitate an insect that has seized it's back? no amount of flexibility is going to dislodge a robber fly with a sure grip on its victim's back
Easy, because the robber fly usually attacks insects it's size or smaller, they can't escape or shake him off.
All insects have good reflexes however, and the hornet could very well shake the fly off. It's too big to "suck" or penetrate. honeybee stings cannot penetrate Giant Hornet abdomen, which is the largest target.
omg how can they kill spider wasps that is so amazing and unusual if it was fighting a wasp they would defanetly win cause they have a sharp mouth to help them bite eat prey and they eat greenfly anything really maybe robber flies can kill other insects but not european wasps u no the common wasps no way
cause they have a bad sting aswell so they would have no chance againest em
Easily one of my favorite insects, awesome predator ! I feel privileged every time I see one .
