Hankyung got cast because right now they're trying to promote him as much as possible, that's why he's in so many variety shows nowadays. SM is trying ot break it in the Chinese market with Super Junior after the success with DBSK. However like you said, his Chinese background does add to it. And besides, he's one of the best looking ones in Suju =)

Summary credits to aquakawai: Hankyung + the girl were a couple, Shiwon was a criminal who took the girl as a hostage. Hankyung was the cop who was trying to stop Shiwon, he got shot, shiwon got away. Shiwon later had to have a heart transplant, the heart he got was Hankyung's. Once he had the heart, he get getting memories/flashbacks of the girl from hankyungs point of view + then he finally figured out what happened through his hospital file, the locket, and seeing the girl. Make sense?

Shiwon was the guy who held Yeonhee hostage. The reason he's rich is that he isn't a petty criminal, but a big time criminal (I think he was holding up a bank or something) when he shot Hankyung who plays a cop. He got Hankyung's heart and started having memories of Yeonhee.
