  • I see now. The strap is around the waist like a belt.

  • Fantastic stuff. :) Look forward to seeing more.

  • the more I hear a hurdy gurdy the more I want to see it in a game!

  • Thanks a lot for this beautiful video

You make me discover all the interest of Elisabethan music for HG

I will follow with a great interest your other publications

  • wow....

  • I am buying my hurdy gurdy this week and won't get it delivered for many months.

I love the (Baroque?) style of your playing...is there any advice or music tab that you recommend I should get to help my playing, as a beginner?

  • thank you for this wonderful video, usually I play only traditional dances or modern tunes ... your style of playing the baroque repertoire will be a point of reference for me! All the best

    Andrew

  • Grazie anche a lei. Ho visto i suoi video. Molto piacevole. DF

  • Thank you for the information. I really wish that I could have come to listen to you this Friday. But there´s the whole Northsea between from where I live to England. It´s fascinating how the microphones position can affect the sound so much that it sounds like two different instruments. At last I must say, what an amazing hg that you´ve got, and you play it so well. I´m searching with light and candle after a similar gurdy.

    All the best !

    MT

  • Well it is two sounds fused as one, anyway. Lovely playing and one of the few instruments that gets me in the heart and gut. Peace

  • Very beautiful! it would be lovely to hear some more hg music from you, why not Corette or Boismortier? How come that the sound of the melodystrings is so different when hearing the two hg.s separately?

    MT

  • Thanks MT! I shall be playing some Boismortier and Chédeville this Friday at the Hurdy Gurdy Festival. How about coming to it. Otherwise, I shall be playing Boismortier, Corrette and Chédeville in Lincoln on July 10th. The two HGs sound different through mike positioning. Best wishes, DF

  • Wow, you really are a good player! I like these songs. Can-you play standing with the kind of strap you are using or is it only to prevent the instrument from falling?

  • Thank you for your comments. A strap around the waist is necessary to play seated. An additional strap around the shoulder is required to play standing or walking.

  • What are the titles of the tunes you played. I enjoyed them very much.

  • Disappointingly, the first tune is called Minuet and the second tune is called Minuet. They are both by Henry Purcell and appear in 'Musick's Hand-maid' printed in 1689.

    Pleased you like them.

    Best wishes, DF

  • you made mushrooms that much better, thanks

  • Absolutely amazing!

  • Thank you.

    DF

  • amazing. i love it.

  • Thank you.

    DF

  • WOW!

This is awesome...I didnt know this instrument until I went to Berlin´s musical Instrument museum. I think its amazing! Does anyone know about pieces or scores made for this instrument? I would like to get more music from this instrument!

  • Thank you eletoga. Classical music for the hurdy gurdy is mainly French. Composers such as Corrette, Boismortier, Chédeville, Bâton, Naudot, Dupuit wrote much lovely music for it. There is a huge store of folk music for it, again mainly French but some good English, Flemish and German tunes. Good luck! DF

  • Hi Dante

Can you tell me who is the luthier oh this hurdy gurdy, please?

    Thank you

  • Hello,

My baroque-style hurdy gurdy was made in 1854 by Alexandre Goux at Varennes, France. DF

  • What trickery is this?!! Does he have another player up his sleeve? Is he engaging strings telekinetically? Explain yourself sir.

  • Hello Salta, This video represents part of a lengthy 3-tune medley from my current CD. I removed the first tune and also took away the percussion tracks.

The only 'trickery' is that which is used in any studio - sound enhancement and occasional harmonies (listen to any pop video). My fingers are really playing the hurdy gurdy. You are simply not hearing the room's natural accoustic and potential traffic noise from beyond.

    Enjoy! DF

  • We had Dante at our Wedding at Rufford Old Hall, Lancashire, in 2005. He was great, pure entertainment. His Herdie Girdie and Cod Piece was the talk of all our guests.

    Thanks

    Rick

  • I'm a history co-ordinator in a Grimsby primary school. I booked Dante for 2 sessions to play his music and tell his tales to 5 Y3/4 classes. The children loved it. Highly recommende4d to bring your Tudor topic alive. Thanks Dante. Nick.
