Now, this was a truly social experiment. I'm sure they were warned not to shoot her--which would have been a criminal offense, but this was very telling nonetheless
I think art types have a kind of curiosity not everyone is aware of. I think that we are able to empathize with all sorts of people, good and bad. To be able to portray those kinds of people in paintings and in writing takes a very dark part of human nature. So if presented with a chance to be able to experience something that is usually looked down upon with no repercussions, I can see how they would take it. But when they look back at the decision, I'm sure they'd be frightened of themselves.
please keep up interesting disussion. Im doing a uni speech and for once the public opinion of youtube commentors such as your self will be valid and count.
i think we all have some kind of sick curiosity to feel what its like to inflict this pain. like killing ants as a child, its a kind of sublime primal instinct, or maybe its just how we are shaped by media crime shows and sexually aggressive television. I know I could not bring myself to inflict paint and would have hopefully stopped anyone doing so, but there is this kind of fascination of pain in everyone.
It also could be seen as a question of the world being made of mostly good or evil people. I think the fact that she's alive when she basically invited people to kill her is a sign there is more good than evil in this world.
Art or a death wish? Seems like an incredibly extreme way prove the wickedness of man. Its almost like she wanted them to hurt her, its like an open forum for masochism with "Art" labeled on top.
Ok i don't really think that audience was right in the head. I would have done all kinds of things, given the due freedom, but inflicting pain would never be one of them. EVER. EEEEEVER. And i really can't undertand why someone would
I understand that this is daring, but I don't consider letting strangers violate you to be art. Of course you may think differently, but to me this just seems pointless. It's expected that when you put a woman in public and tell everyone that they can have their way with her, this is what you'll get. As I said, it's daring and not many people would try this, but I don't find it beautiful or disturbing in any way. I only find it to be somewhat idiotic.
@reginablablabla You just explained the whole point of the performance piece yourself, when you said: "when you put a woman in public and tell everyone that they can have their way with her, this is what you get." People trying to supress their dark sides, yet revealing the most disturbing qualities - that they might not even be aware of possessing themselves - when allowed to, was the point.
@reginablablabla We all like to think we're so good; that we wouldn't hurt another human being just for the sake of it, but we are animals. That we are somehow 100% "good" is an illusion, and I think "Rhythm 0" showed that perfectly. And you can't say "if you put yourself in this situation, this is what you get". No one was TOLD to hurt her. There were other objects on that table; people had a CHOICE between inflicting pain on her, or to bring her pleasure.
@reginablablabla That most people chose pain ver pleasure when they thought they wouldn't be held responsible says a lot about human nature to me, and that to me was the point of this entire performance piece.
@godessceline I don't know that it says much about human nature at all as the people who did whatever they did were not straight out of the womb. Also, the people who were at that show were a select group of people, not a very good sample group for finding conclusions for humanity as a whole. That said, I think it speaks much more to society and the social condition these people were (are) under and how frustrated they must be when they get an opportunity to control someone and can only do harm.
@thatgibbyguy Everybody is forgetting that the audience weren't all harming her. It's not mentioned in this video but audience members; protected her, cleaned her wounds, dabbed her tears and intercepted sexual and physical assualts. Negative people seem to only gain a bleak glimpse of human instinct to cause harm. I interpret good and bad human nature in the audience.
@newerawearer Not only this but it should also be noted that this is not something new. Such experiments were conducted by sociologists and psychologists long before this. Except that they didn't call it art and were therefore not noted and worshiped as such(especially among the "art" community, which has a lot of phonies among it).
People also need to realize that the outcome of this was pretty predictable. Just look at the everyday news. Death, theft, harm and pain everywhere
I agree, however this kind of psychological experiment is given new context under the name of art. Perhaps purely because the results and audience reactions are Still being discussed by normal people today rather than people in the sociology feild. Abramovic exposes masochistic tendencies to the public sphere and raises a lot of questions rather than attempting to answer them. Oh and yes I agree, there are a lot of "phonies"in the art world haha.
@newerawearer The phonies are also one of the reason I don't like modern art as much. It has become a "hip/cool culture" movement more than anything else. So the joke is mostly on the people who want to be elitist(in other words "special artistic individuals") and separate themselves from the rest of the "commoners". I do respect the artists themselves, well some of them.
I do agree that she perhaps gave it new context under the name of art but I also think that people themselves are too lazy
Yes I agree, it has become a clique of elitists. Postmodern art is often attempt's to be ridiculous rather than beautiful. I welcome another renaissance in Art were aesthetics become important again. It's happening so keep your eyes out for art about beauty and expression rather than bleak work adrressing stupid questions done by Pompous Twats..
however I beleive much of Abramovics work is profound because it does succesfully address important behaviours in human nature.
@newerawearer I certainly hope so(about aestethics becoming important again). It is true that some artist strive for that still. However they are not very appreciated or as appreciated as some of the attention whores.
About Abramovic: It does address some of the interesting sides of the human nature successfully but I think that such demonstrations of the human nature should be mostly left to documentary films. I for one would learn a lot more from them. Them being the middle point between art
@newerawearer and scientific documentations written on the subject. Of course her art does play a role here but like I said, I think it's way too exaggerated. The real people who deserve praise here are the scientist who dedicate their lives to this kind of research and who offer solutions as well.
I am sorry as I would love to debate this subject further but these Youtube comments are becoming a burden. The number of characters is limited and there is a time differential between posts.
@newerawearer and should look up psychology much more because psychology is the only that is asking the real questions and also providing the answers(as much as it can). The meaning of art is being overstretched onto areas that don't concern it as much.Likewise people don't know what art is or isn't nowadays.
One of my opinions is also that the artists are somewhat to be blamed here.A lot of them seek mostly attention and little else. They are also overly concerned with their name being remembered
To be able to do this needs a lot of commitment with your artwork . And Abramovic surely has it. The ideological contents of the piece is rather emotive, but, again is the commitment with the piece what moves me the most.
Incredibly disturbing, considering she was treated that way by everyday people who are all around us. Makes you wonder if you really feel safe in society, if people had their own way with you.
essentialy in the audience : male spectator, macho italian male. Fascism not dead.
