  • The left-handed guitar player is NOT Chachi. Sure does look like him, though!

  • Is this lip synched?

  • Johansen could have been another john cougar if he had stuck to playing rock instead

    of the later dexter BS!

    Jman

  • thanks for posting! i havent seen this since the 80's and could not remember the middle song. what a great medley. my first exposure to the animals that i was aware of.

  • It's so funny to see him as the first angel in the movie "Scrooged" ...

  • The guitar player giving the one-eye to David is Huw Gower, of The Records. He was with the band for 2 years and plays on 'Live It Up'.

  • how can a man work so hard and make it look so easy

  • What does Scott Baio's wink at 1:33 mean?

  • @ibcalif ... I remember his video from way back when, but lordy, I never realized that that's Scott Baio!

  • They performed the shit out of that

  • Probably the last time MTV was any good...

  • great ads at the end, remember intellivision????????????

  • David Jo at the best... w/ Tony Machine on drums! I love as he plays drums. I saw it 2 times in Italy w/ Elliott Murphy. 25 y ago

  • David Jo is the real deal

  • ha ha ha = i always thought David Johanson & Buster Poindexter were the same dude ALL these years LMAO !

  • I bought the album when it came out, and still have it and still play this song. Rockin'!!

  • Loads of Charisma

  • The only concert I remember seeing on Nickelodeon was Split Enz.They usto to show that concert every week.

  • This is a cool video, they usto to show this video like every 2 hours back in the day. there was hardly any music videos back then,so they wore the hell out of this one, what a departure from the

    New York Dolls

  • I am preety sure this was a concert that aired on Nickelodeon late night in the same year...

  • arthur was a tool, allways had been....but you cant help but pitty the guy, and be happy he got to the reunion befor he died...REMEMBER killer kane long haird woman cut , i dont no how much he had to do with makeing that song , but the song is pretty f'n cool. the only thing he did post dolls that was cool . arthur pretty much was a tool.

  • buster poindexter was an alter ego type thing, he also wanted to not be associated with the new york dolls and their failure due to heroin and stupidity. david wanted to go to the next level and proved that you could party and do just that, but it the heroin jinx that killed the dolls, he did not want to be associated with that....jerry could hang, but johnny couldent. hey man the facts r the facts.....

  • yeah he would have been better ad blues singer

  • Omgz I have been looking for this, thank you for posting this!!!!! He does justice to the this cover!

  • Wow! A mic with a cord attached! Great song!

  • David Johansen=Buster Poindexter, why would someone change their name to somethin goofy lol

  • great video!!

  • That's Huw Gower of The Records on guitar.

  • Excellent! Saw David and his band play Haymakers in Wheeling, IL way back when. My ears still bleed every once and a while! : )

  • @nimrod1957 Good God... I must have been at that same show ! My old stomping grounds... ( Raised in Rolling Meadows) Haymakers hosted some great artists.

  • Man, This Was A Trip Down Memory Lane. Thank You So Very Much. The Commercials, JJ Jackson Atari. Too Much. I Love The 80's. The Best Decade Ever.

  • Make sure you all watch til the very end. All the early 80's commercials will really take you back (totally LOL at the stereo test clip, complete with "call your cable company for a stereo hookup" announcement because TV's were still mono in 1982).

  • Johansen's got a great voice to sing Eric Burdon.. I remember when this came out, a fantastic performance. Thanks for the post

  • JJ Jackson RIP brother,he was the best vj

    MTV had!

    Jman

  • david had such a powerful voice!

  • Watch the very first hour of MTV as well as 6 hours of Uncut MTV from this day ...Right Now !!!! Including this clip.....Come to my Channel and Check out my playlists!!!!

  • Damn! I haven't seen that video in almost 30 years. It's one of the rare cases that the cover is as good as the original.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • @tampasifu same here...MTV 1982 i saw it the first time...good times

  • @tampasifu I haven't seen it since I was 12. So, 28 years. I miss the old MTV!

  • AWESOME video. David Johansen's voice is perfect for this medley of classic Animals songs.

I can remember when it first aired on MTV (God, I'm getting old...).

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane!

  • Just amazing. He stomps ass and inspires even now. And be sure to stick around for the commercials. Colecovision, Atari and Intellivision. Holy good God. The veritable triumvirate of early 1980's home video console heaven.

  • Saw this line up at Club Foot in Austin Tx. while they were touring in support of the "Live it UP" album, had drinks with the guitar player after the show...those were the daze!!!

  • Fantastic! David Johansen's great, booming voice combined with the groove of the band is just the perfect rock'n roll thrill!

  • Mystery Man Part 2 from back-black T-shirt white trim 3:01-3:05 Raising & lowering a clenched fist+singing at: 3:08-3:10 from back singing 3:12-3:16 singing+ Raising & lowering clenched fists 3:18-3:20 Grand finale 4:08-4:15
  • Yeah! The guy with the bandana! I love that guy! He's just pouring his guts out! This was an excellent vid that would come on MTV in the early eighties. Waiting for the Van Halen concert vids to come on, this vid would be one of the better ones that would come on MTV while waiting! Awesome cover Johansen pulls off here.

  • @JohnFPorcaro that is SO funny! My sister and I used to talk nonstop about this guy while we were watching this video. It is great to know that other people were observing the same thing LOL.

  • @JohnFPorcaro Yeah, that's who I was watching, too!!!

  • Mystery Man Bending arms at the elbows: :01-:06 singing at: :33-:34 Raising clenched fist: :56-:59 singing : 1:21-1:24 clapping rasied hands(back) 2:18-2:21
  • Around 1:35 guitar player Huw Gower winks at David Johansen. I don't know why, but it cracks me up. The big biker dude with the bandana in the front RULES.

  • Thanks very much for posting this one, definitely an old time favorite of mine from MTV's early days. Anybody know if there was a video of Johansen's '82 hit "Funky But Chic"?

  • Thanks dalekenbuck! Saw them live in '82 at Haymakers in Palatine, IL. Met David before the show- he was havin' a hot dog next door. Cool guy.

  • This just got re-released on cd again after quite a few years of being out of print.

I picked it up in 1995 when I got a reminicing bug and the whole concert is good. Thanks for posting this!

  • Does anyone know (for sure ... there is some misinformation on this) where this was filmed? It's not the actual MTV concert, is it? I ask because I think I'm in the video, but I've never been sure, and it's not like there's a closeup of my face. I think it was recorded at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, and the guy who directed the video told me once he thought that might be the case.

  • Thanks for this archival footage ... and for the commercials too. Great seeing those old video game commercials.

  • THANK YOU. So amazing.

  • Damn, this ol' boy can rock! He's come a long way from wearing pearls and dresses (New York Dolls), but he can still "keep it real"!

    Thanks for posting!

  • wow mtv comes through i like this song i have the whole album live

  • This is a great performance and video; glad to see it back after so long. Don't mean to be negative but is this the best video quality available? I seem to remember it being a lot crisper. Still a great song.

  • omg! I haven't seen this in over 20 years!!!! Thanks for the post, dude!

  • e546u56u3

  • Terrific video ! Great memories of MTV watching this again. This is the way it should always be. This is just a taste of what Heaven will be like. Great Mtv all over again !

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you big time--this gives me goose bumps 27 years after this first aired. David Johansen is incredible!

  • By the way... I was 11 years old in 1982. I did not notice then this MTV VJ had some Gay tendencies.

Thanks again for sharing this video

  • Dude... you emailed me about this video and you don't know me. I have been looking for this video for the longest time. Why am I so lucky?

This was when MTV was about music. Can you believe Music Television actually played music at one point?

  • Thanks for posting....I've been looking for this video for quite some time! What a great tribute David does!

  • Ha Ha! That was awesome. Thank you so much for posting this. It's been at least 25 years. The commercials were awesome, too.
