I listen to things like Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Drive Like Jehu, Coaltar of The Deepers, Slowdive, Bohren Und Der Club of Gore, At The Drive-In, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Jandek, Devo, The Smiths, Sleeping People, Slint, Drudkh, Pelican, The Misfits, Bad Religion, any music from just about any genre. I do have 80,000 Cds...none of them Dave Mathews...but some are Sun Ra, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck.

i think that's an oversimplification. it's more helpful to look at the way the mass culture treats music, especially in the form of monolithic record companies that shape popular music and wield distribution like a crude, grotesque baton, producing absolute shit.

take a look at music during the mid-to-late 90's in the united states. there was some good music (much of which went unnoticed) but relative to the amount of shit that was spewed out and distributed, it was a very bad period.
