  • Wow! That takes me back! Burger Chef! Thanks so much for posting these! I remember a lot of those great TV 50 ads like Ollie Fretter as Super Fretter and WRIF--Baby!!! Wasn't there one with a kid who recorded his piano playing on a reel to reel tape recorder so his mom thought he was practicing while he was out playing ball? Highland Appliance maybe? They played it all the time as I recall. Man, I'd love to see some WKBD stuff with The Ghoul!

  • Your welcome.

  • Am a little disappointed that Mr.Belvedere isnt on here.Aside from that,is great.

  • That sign used by that "Color Tile" thing is really cool-looking.

  • @MattTheSaiyan I miss it so!

  • Dude that was the best vintage Detroit commercials I have seen on Youtube.Keep more coming:)

  • I'll do my best. Thanks!

  • Thank you for sharing!

  • Your welcome!

  • I see WRIF at this point used the same Focus music and graphics as sister-station WPLJ (95.5) in New York.

  • @wmbrown6 Did ABC Radio used to own WRIF in Detroit?

  • @heine71 - They sure did.

  • @heine71 Later ABC Radio acquired 96.3 FM in Detroit.

  • Beautiful quality.. supremely preserved! Great batch to boot!

  • Love stuff like this! More, please!

Eye candy: Shelley Smith at 3:35 ... roommate who goes to Elaine Powers at 4:14 ... Susan Anton at 5:43 ... "Peggy" (way too cute for "Bob") at 8:42

Lou Gordon would die 4 months later. Assumed he was Detroit's version of Irv Kupcinet, but Wikipedia says no. Was a hard-ass and one of the first journos to to criticize Nixon over Watergate; didn't fawn over Bob Hope but grilled him over backing Nixon, and "questioned George Wallace's sanity -- to his face."

  • I'll probably have more to come in the future; I have a handful of Star Treks from WKBD with ads intact.

And yes, from what I read, Lou Gordon was quite the journalist.

  • MacArhur Park in Lou Gordon promo!

  • Yes, indeed.

  • @VideoSurferClassic - And the original Richard Harris recording - NOT Hugo Montenegro's Moog-ized cover as heard on WJW-TV's "City Camera News" during this same period.

  • I have to admit, this is a fantastic post. To see commercials before I was even born is amazing.

  • Thanks for the compliment. :-)

  • I think it's January 2, 1977.

  • Sounds good to me; getting an exact date is difficult.

  • @gamelover1949 I had to check the Toledo Blade to find an exact date. They didn't have 1/2 available but here's what I got for Sunday night programming the other dates.

    1/9: Movie "Mysterious Island"

    1/16: Movie "Prince Valiant"

    1/23: "Hogan's Heroes" and Pistons-Bullets Basketball Game

1/30: Movie: "Beneath The 12-Mile Reef"

I narrowed it down to 1/2 with that info.

  • @jdelachjr2002 They still offer WKBD on cable here thankfully (though I hardly watch it anymore).

  • Wow, I was a year old. These commercials are in better shape than I am!

  • I was amazed by the quality; these transferred perfectly!
