head up mate, my mum has graves disease/hyperthyroidism too and my sister had it until she had to get her thyroid taken out, no she has hypo-thyroidism (underactive thyroid). It's a very manageable disease and if they get in early its likely people can go into permanent remission. Your brain isn't killing itself, it's just the immune system is working too hard so you need to supress it a bit. There's not much to worry about if it's treated well.

Hey, there's a new medical treatment for autoimmune diseases and there are a few doctors in each state in Australia using it: see mpkb.org. I'm on it for my disease and i'm doing really well. It takes a long time though, but so does getting this sick. I'm in Sydney but there are a bunch of people in Melbourne on it so have a look around. It's medicine and it works. Best of luck.
