@cfg1991 Learn to vary your vibrating speed. Vibrate the string with a lot of force, almost overkill. A light touch WILL NOT do it and will make it just sound annoying and weak. Vibrato is meant to be noticed. Don't shake your finger forwards and backwards like moving between frets. Use your wrist as an anchor point and shake your entire hand. The best vibrato will usually NOT come from your first finger but instead your second or third. Use the first two fingers as support.
@jsd1982 great, thank you! and what do you do about the strings next to the one you are performing the vibrato on to keep them from making noise, especially during wider vibrato??
haha Nice shirt, as mentioned. For that short acoustic type lick that opens, did you use a sampler that caps and replays live licks so you can play one guitar overdubbed?
@MetallicBill No, the backing track actually takes care of the acoustic parts. I just played along with it to start out. My guitar track is all one single recording with no divisions or overdubs.
@jsd1982 There are effect racks that can take an instant lick played and start that on a playback A-B repeat in effect (using CD programming for example) It's pretty cool. I had a POD and sold it long ago, but not sure what EFX rack to get in the future
@MetallicBill Oh I know what you mean, but no I didn't use any replay devices or loopers. Those are too complex for me to use live without lots of planning, rehearsal and precise timing.
@jsd1982 ...and equipment, I find that plays a large part! Metallica's Kirk Hamster would be using LTD Les Paul with EMGs, I bought 81 and 85, and I still much prefer the 85. My BC Rich Warlock has basic humbuckers, I can only guess the NJ series of Japan uses DiMarzios
@MetallicBill Kirk Hamster! LOL. DiMarzios are fantastic pickups in general but you need to know what level of output you're looking for before you find the right fit. EMGs are nice for all-distortion all the time, but fall short for dynamic playing and more clean passages. It's very difficult to get a great clean tone using EMGs. I used to haev the 81 and 85 pair and the distortion was fantastic but the clean suffered a lot. When I got the JS-1000 the difference was clear.
@jsd1982 The EMG 81/85 set I went with because of the big artist roster using the same, paid over $300 for that install setup! Still have them... and I've found you can get clean tone from the right amp, but battery life is important and the sound is a one trick pony of sorts. I ditched my DiMarzios to be honest...the ones from my Rich Bich guitar originally. I would go with Seymour Duncan
@MetallicBill I meant to type the EMG 81 and then add the 89 IIRC, better then the 85 EMG, that one is dull from experience. The higher end response of the lead pickup is what is preferred... Should add I heard if you crank them with a REAL TUBE amp...attenuated perhaps...it will get even better response from them
Omg! The guitar sounds are almost as good as on the studio version! Can u give me information? What amp u use? What settings?? Please! Im a HUGE Metallica fan!
@axeppo MESA/Boogie Triaxis preamp will get you in the ballpark. I change my settings far too often to give you anything specific. Usually I document the settings I used in the video description.
Wow, what can I say?!? That was fantastic!!! I am an avid guitar player (and practicer) and i live for the day that I can play that song the way you do. My hat is off to you sir!
@jsd1982 I'm afraid that's gonna be a no-prize :D but maybe in the darkest of your moments you can soothe your soul thinking that someone respects your taste in t-shirts. lol.
But I'm confused by the description. You ran through cabinet simulation...then you ran back OUT into a power amp and and cabinet and recorded with an SM57?
Man! Fuck'n awesome cover! Sound Quality it is like from good studio ;) ROCK ON IT! And nice EpphLP ;) In my opinion Slash signature is better but it is only my opinion ;p :)
Excellent question! I have my guitar amp miked up and record the audio while recording the video. I make a CD-quality mix from the miked guitar amp in Cakewalk Sonar with drums, bass, etc. In the video editor I pull in the video with its crappy microphone-recorded audio track along with my much-nicer CD-quality audio mix and manually line up the CD-quality audio track with the video's audio track so that it should sync with the video correctly and then just mute the video's crappy audio track.

He's not even playing!!! listen to this and then the real song and you can tell because you can't hear backgroung noise and you hear drums and that stuff!!!
Awesome job man great tone! How do you have the Air Norton and Steve's Special wired? Are either of them reversed (flipped over)? I have a Les Paul Standard that I'm dropping that combo in and would love to know.
I've listened and watched many ppl cover fade to black on guitar and you my friend are the only ones who in my mind played it the way it should be played...and u even did both guitars which is hard u less u play them both seperate and whatnot..
anyways yeah man great cover and the solo came out perfect...
Amazing how the mesas can get that early metallica marshall tone from kill em all and ride the lightning, your an amazing player by the way subscribed :)
Thanks! I think the mesas get more towards the Puppets, AJFA, Black tones than Kill or Ride. Kill was Marshall, Ride was a tube screamer into a Marshall (I assume). Fade to Black, to me, stands out on the Ride album because you can play it with a different tone from the album and it'll still sound great!
Well what i was saying is it's amazing how the amp that was used for the Puppets, AJFA and Black Album tones can still make a good marshall tone, and yeah fade to black is personally my one of my favourite songs by them i have a modelling amp since i haven't been play long and i noticed on my master/ajfa and black tone i can get it close to the fade to black tone, but i have to switch to a different setting for all the other songs on kill em all and ride.
Yes I do. Watch closely and see that my thumb drops right down to the middle of the neck so that you get the most stretch with your pinky out to that 19th fret. Leave your 2nd finger on the 15th fret, 1st finger on 14th, and 3rd finger on 16th after the stretch. Then just practice it slowly and keep repeating it, slowly increasing your tempo until it's clean.
Love your tone man. What are your amp settings?Im putting an Air Norton in the neck of my Jackson RR3, I hear the cleans are not ballsy enough though. Your thoughts? Sounds great with the distortion, but I imagine your Mesa is helping quite a bit with that.
I cant figuer out,do u have the real track playing in the back. I know the rythm guitar is playing but what about the distorted parts or is that all u playing?
No it was a backing track I pulled from the net somewhere. It has the acoustic tracks, bass, drums, and rhythm distorted guitar tracks at some points.
Yup. What you see me playing is what I'm playing. What you don't see me playing I do not play and is part of the backing track. I didn't do any overdubs.
idk. is it the les paul that gives it that tone. i use an ibanez. but i get my tone perfect but in spots in the solos it doesnt sound thick. it sounds dried out. help plz...
Actually it's mostly the Triaxis that gets the tone. Most of the guitars I run through it sound similar. Each guitar has its own characteristics of course and there are marked differences. I like the Les Paul for its thick neck which is good for rhythms and the fixed bridge is nice so I don't have serious tuning / intonation issues.
that sound is amazing. Could you elaborate a bit more how you achieved that sound. From your description I can tell, that you did not record it straight from your amp or am I mistaken?
Did you use revalver solely for it's cab sim value?
You can watch the Gear Walkthrough video I did 5 months ago for a more detailed explanation. I take the direct dry signal out of the Triaxis preamp and record that. Then I apply ReValver with only its speaker convolver plugin using my homemade speaker impulse files made with my own gear: Shure SM57, MESA 4x12" w/ Celestion 30s, MESA Simul Class 2:90 power amp.
great job, i'm learning this song at the moment.. hope i can play with as much feeling and accuracy as u just did. 5 stars :)
1 question though: What settings did u use on ur amp for the intro (the solo), and also for the acoustic part? What pick up/ treble/bass settings etc, thanks :)
Sorry I've lost those setting numbers. I don't think they would help you anyway; just play around with the Triaxis in LD2 GREEN and YELLOW modes. I used a pair of Air Norton and Steve's Special pickups.

Then I apply ReValver with only its speaker convolver plugin using my homemade speaker impulse files made with my own gear: Shure SM57, MESA 4x12" w/ Celestion 30s, MESA Simul Class 2:90 power amp.

There slow.. and i compare them to limpbizkit and linkin park

You probably wouldn't say that if you played guitar and tried to learn one of their songs, but that's fine if you think that.

great job, i'm learning this song at the moment.. hope i can play with as much feeling and accuracy as u just did. 5 stars :)
1 question though: What settings did u use on ur amp for the intro (the solo), and also for the acoustic part? What pick up/ treble/bass settings etc, thanks :)
StefanR112 2 years ago
Sorry I've lost those setting numbers. I don't think they would help you anyway; just play around with the Triaxis in LD2 GREEN and YELLOW modes. I used a pair of Air Norton and Steve's Special pickups.
