As a number eight you need to be the best in the forwards, the tight five are power and the loose forwards are the speed, number eight is ment to be a combination of both, being the fastest and strongest loose forward, Pierre Spies has speed, no doubt, power? unquestionable; the only thing missing from his equation is defence, he's very good at attack and combining his attributes but in defence he is nothing a number eight should be.

I dunno generally number 8 should be taller than the other back row forwards because of where he stands in the lineout, and because the ball comes out of the scrum between his legs. but it varies. Blindside flanker(6) is often as big or bigger than the number 8 and the openside(7) is usually the fastest(and smallest) back row forward.

For a minimum of two years he was been monitored due to the illness he had. So the suggestion that Spies is on steroids is flawed in every possible way. Two Boks took supplements a couple of days after arriving in the UK and look how quickly it was spotted. At amateur level I agree with you, at the top? Very unlikely to say the least.
