@KraftySK It's showing the area that the dropping eye of ender could potentially land at, so you should cover that much if you want to guarantee the eye will land on a pressure plate. That's my guess, at least. Hope that makes sense of it :)

the eye just goes in the general direction of the stronghold, which is why it didn't land on the target when he wasn't on the red wool at the end. this keeps other people from discovering the base, it'll only activate if you're standing at the right spot (theoretically).
