  • please take the horse out a there OMG

  • Oh please. You non-reiners have no idea how powerful these animals are. I have worked with Craig and he's not a soft hand by any means, but one of the best in the business.

  • @NanoPlanet6905- Thank you!

  • I see nothing wrong with his training. This is a hateful video

  • Let's yank on her face a little more, shall we? D:

The barn I work at had a Lil miss Addy tude filly on a recip mare. It's terrible to know that she'll probably go through this same thing. :(

  • what a strange "sport" - god forbid my horse should ever look that cowed -

  • Craig lost it in the last rundown. The definition of a reiner is a horse who is "willingly guided." The problem in reining is the same as dressage (or any sport),more is better. If judges would penalize horses who are behind the bit this would change. On the edge is the goal in both traditional and western 'dressage.' If Craig doesn't want this video seen then he should rethink his training methods and adjust.

  • Reiners are so awesome. Starting mine in reining and can't wait for him to be this good!

  • Comment removed

  • @BabyGirlTaffy11- You make ME mad! what gives these people the right to discriminate this guy! Hes no abuser and certainly not a terrible person. Reining horses arent as sensitive! They need a little jump in reality once in a while. If a horse keeps misbehaving like that, they will turn into a bratty animal!

  • There is obviously something wrong with the rules if this treatment is "monitored" and tolerated.

  • I cry when I see the treatment of this poor horse...And this is ok for professionals?? People like this rider should be doing other things and not be close to animals at all.

  • That horse is beaten, not in the sense of being whipped, but that it's not going to fight anymore.

  • THE HORSE LOOKED HURT! POOR THING, LOOKS LIKE HE BROKE IS SPIRIT WITH ITS HEAD DOWN LIKE THAT.

  • what an idiot

  • he is one of the berst riders!!!!!!!!! stop saying theses things

  • what the....!? that is CRUELTY. he shouldent be able to compete! :(

  • i thought rollkur was illegal -.-'

  • @Marixxen2 I thought rollkur was only prevalent in dressage. But it's not called rollkur anymore. It's "low deep and round" and that makes it okay :-/

  • @LadyJennivieve yeah, unfortunatly true.. And dressage is almoste the worst - "al of a sudden" it's completly okey to ride behind the vertical line all the time too. (because the horses are trained in LDR) There is just too much "unfortunate" things in the horse-world...

  • Oh my giddy aunt...I feel sick...... so sad for the horse.....get off her!!!!

  • LDR is (unfortunately just) restrictet! Why is the FEI not doing anything against that? Sure, the horse is not pulled in this position but it probably has been forced so by jabbing it in the mount or kicking its ribs every now and then...

I have to say that I'm not familiar with western riding. This just does not look right to me.

  • @AmbrePlumage That jibbing in the mouth was what got to me, especially with a curb or shank bit.

  • Horse obviously trained in draw reins. Training in hyperflexion results in the horse learning to evade the bit. Hence the jerking in his mouth. Crude attempt to get the horse to soften. Also the horse is lame. This opinion from a trainers perspective. Shortcuts are shortcuts. The results are obvious to anyone who knows what they are looking at! AQHA FEI should be ashamed for allowing this.Corrupt judges, instructors ect.

  • TORTURE!! I get a stomach ache at the sight of this torture video! May he be convicted of cruelty to the horse and deprived of his right to keep horses again!

  • Disgusting. Big man being an ass to a horse that is trying its best to do what is being asked. I would like to put metal in this man's mouth and jerk his face around just because people are watching and they will think I am a super star to do these things.

  • as you can see, around 1:55 he is not the only one who is doing ROLLKUR!

  • plain wrong, horse didn't deserve such a horrible treatment !

  • Thank you for posting this video, I really hope putting this to air influences this rider and others like him to see what they are doing is wrong.

  • Sráč to je!

  • No point in condeming the riders. It's the judges who either accept or reject that treatment. As long as judges permit it, it will continue.

  • Talk about an unnatural head set. It is not natural and painful for the horse. There is nothing wrong with a low head carriage but come on no horse carries their head this far behind the vertical. Talk about unbalanced and unnatural.

  • I wish i would have been able to hear his explanation as to why he was doing what he was doing.

  • Your horses all look broken oO :(

  • For anyone wondering why he pulled on the horse's mouth, because when she stoped she "hung" on the bit. Leaning on it instead on droping her head like she was trained to. And this is NOT crule. Kids get spanked when they miss behave, horses get the bit pulled on. It dose not hurt them.

  • @ReinerForEver THANK YOU!!!!

  • @ReinerForEver if yanking on the bit doesn't hurt the horse then why do horses re-act to quickly to it? if it does hurt then why are you comparing it to a child being spanked? if it doesn't hurt the why are you saying it is an effective punishment? what do you have to prove yanking on a horse mouth with a metal bit; in this case, a metal bit with a large shank; doesn't hurt a horse.

  • @ReinerForEver have you EVER seen a horses mouth, that got yanked? i don't think so, otherwise you would not post something like this... for your information: a horse, that gets yanked brutally (for example like in this video!) gets bruises INSIDE it's mouth, i can hardly imagine anything more painful than that! you can even BREAK the jaw of a horse, if yanked extremely. the use of a bit has to be very very sensitive, otherwise one can damage a horse severely!

  • @camploverin

The curb bit acts as LEVERAGE rather than just straight pressure to the horses mouth. Reiners use this bit to collect the horse and have the horses head tucked in. Therefore with the mechanics of the bit, it is almost impossible to get bruises on the mouth from yanking on it. Also, yanking on the bit is necessary at times. My gelding would have took advantage and not respected me without a few yanks when he misbehaves. ALso, horses in the field are much worse to each other.

  • @ReinerForEver

    completley agree!!

how else can you train a 1000 pound animal without discipline and rewards. I would love to see these people commenting train a horse to this level without any discipline or pressure to the bit. ;)

  • How about you leave that horse's mouth alone. Oh and probably shouldn't be working that horse with the the knee already being wrapped. Imo

  • awful awful awful pooooor horse

  • my opinion: that's horse abuse

  • The only thing i have to say,, POOR HORSE

  • WOW show the real IDIOTS commenting thinking he has a knee injury lol AHHH its called a knee wrap MORONS, reiners ride with them so PREVENT injuries. These horses are athlets, this mare has won a tremendous amount of money&is a great show horse. Carrots & Sugar Cubes don't make them perform at this level. She was diving her shoulders into the ground so he ripped her up big deal he will only have to do it a few times to get his point across vs you BY people who poke poke poke cause you cant ride!

  • @pocolena287 AGREED:)

  • Once upon a time i had respect for reiners. But that was in a day they practiced classical horsemanship....

  • Can we say "western rolkur" @ its possible worst (or perhaps best????) - ?

  • You know what, if I was owned by that dick fuck, I would most likely kick the shit out of him so he would fucking die... Why the hell did he deserve any of that? The man probably doesnt know shit about horses and just rides for the prize.

  • @gEtoVer1T1

do you not think that a 1000 pound animal wouldn't do that if it wanted to????

any experienced horse person knows that there is no stopping a horse when it wants to do something. For this fact, it is a great feat to have trained this horse so well and perform it without the horse looking mad or swishing a tail, or pinning ears. The training in this video is very fair. horse misbehaves, trainer fixes it, trainer rewards, horse agrees.

  • Bökebergs Gård? Where is that? Sweden?

I'm from Sweden and the name sounds familiar..

  • so ein arschloch !

  • I'm gonna do the same to you...Ready for pain? What a stupid way to ride a horse...SO STUPID! Nothing else...Do you think you are an amazing rider? Seriously...

  • Poor horse! I wish the same would be done with him.

  • Pfff I'm a reiner but if I ever see someone ride like that, I will tell them off for sure! Seriously wth? How can those judges look at that and say nothing?

  • *sigh* if only they made a bit for humans..

  • What a POS!!!!!!!!! That is the worst horseman/cowboy I have ever seen, he is a heartless and cruel POS and should be given a swift kick in the arse, wich that horse would kick him square in the mouth!! He is no cowboy because REAL COWBOYS follow the Cowboy Code which states a Cowboy should always be kind and treat his horse with respect!

  • can anyone tell me why that horse is being ridden if it has a knee injury?

  • @hot8990798 its not a knee injury LOL. its a wrap to support and protect the tendons. LOLLL too funny! Its like why it is wearing the medicine boots on all fours. Same concept. It is to prevent an injury. get with the facts!

  • What a jerk. That poor horses mouth. If I was the judge I would have DQ him.

  • His right Leg :(

  • Oh my god.

  • Wounded Knee Massacre, history happens again...

  • @jacmeespie

do you ride horses? if so, you would know this is a knee wrap with a purpose of preventing injury by both supporting and protecting tendons. If the horses knee was injured, you would know.

  • @jenny50ify Bit induced over-bending inflicts acute pain, chronic pain and nerve pain (neuralgia). Its victims exhibit fear and mental stress. In addition, by locking-up the neck, a horse is partially asphyxiated, unable to see properly and moves unbalanced. These horses need injury preventing knee wraps. In the long-term, the practice probably causes permanent structural damage to many parts of the body, including the trachea, lungs and spine.

  • Craig, I just want you to know that their are many fans out their who support you. Please ignore those ignorant people out there and keep on with you work! You have my respect!

By the way to many of these posters: It is o.k. to have a different view on things, however it should be communicated and a civilized manner. Maybe youtube should think about a filter...

  • @PrettyHorseFarm im sorry but would you truly want to be that horse? i mean really thats a leverage bit hes got on and hes yanking on his mouth...i would not want to be this horse

  • HORROR!!!!

  • Intellectual property? I don't see any intellect being used.

  • So agree with you @Pocolena287 !!!

  • Just one quick question, what exactly did the horse do wrong at any point in this video to deserve any type of jab in the mouth, or kick in the ribs? Honestly. What a beautiful horse. And such a terrible horseman.

  • @futuregrrl And that's the horrible part. For what I know of, this type of horseriding, earns points to how 'stable' the horse is, meaning that it shall not pay any attention/ respond in any way not wanted from the rider, this is why ALL of the riders jab the horses mouth and kicks the ribs, because they 'train' them in NO response.. Thinking about it makes me sick, how can any of these call themself 'riders'.?

  • @futuregrrl

At the beginning, the horse wasn't picking up its shoulder, and for all we know he could have been dropping the shoulder and the rider wanted it picked up.

For the stops and back ups you can clearly see the horse was heavy on the forehand so the rider checked the horse and released the rein pressure when the horse responded.

training = ask, make it happen, reward

or else we wouldn't be able to train or tame these 1000 pound animals

  • This is just horrifying. The horse is clearly not enjoying this; he's enslaved by pain and fear of pain. The rider is constantly popping the horse in the mouth, and jabbing him in the ribs, and from what I can tell, the horse is doing what he was asked...why does the rider have to keep popping him while the horse is obeying? Where is the horse's reward for responding? I hope that horse learns to throw his rider someday REAL soon.

  • @jazzyfish100

the horse was not doing what was asked or expected. It was very heavy on the forehand throughout the whole routine. Checking the horse simply gets the horse to listen and the bit helps lift the weight of the forehand onto the haunches. Please get your facts right before posting silly comments. I rein.

  • ! see too much spurning and rein jerking and no connection between horse and rider... Mr. Schmersal, you should buy a monster truck so you can run over none living things.

  • Solche Idioten findet man in jedem Reitstil. Dressur, Springen, Military (Vielseitigkeit), Western, einfach überall.

  • @pocolena287, I wasn't drooling, I was vomiting. Watched the WEG reining final. Guy punched his horse in the mouth, just before he entered the ring. Great role model for future western riders. Big spade bit, and give it a yank! Horse doesn't feel it. Bruises don't bleed, fyi. They bleed inside, where you can't see it. Since the horse's nose was in her chest, how the HELL could she yield further??? You think he was asking her to lighten more. He was punching her mouth.

  • @pocolena287, there's a reason QH's are so dead quiet, you know. They have to be, with all the wonderfully abusive techniques "cowboys" have dreamt up through the years.. Try that treatment on a TB. Let the somersaults begin.

  • honestly hope one of his horses bucks him off and he lands on his skull. He's disgusting.

  • Doing what he's doing obviously is not teaching the horse anything except not to trust humans... These horses are such angels, putting up with this. They really shouldn't, but they do....

  • @xXGlamRiderXx

actually he is teaching the opposite. By the simple means of training he is exhibiting, the horse gets a clear understanding of what is right and wrong. For example, this horse was very heavy on the forehand - a feat that is really bad in all riding especially reining. The trainer checked the horse until it was on its haunches again and he then released the pressure. The horse does not even swish a tail, kick, or pin its ears. Instead, it was taught that was wrong, and agrees.

  • @jenny50ify No, actually. Yanking on the reins doesn't lighten the forehand, it hardens the mind and the mouth. Causes a lot of harm and no good. This is abuse. I can't believe you have the nerve to defend this.

  • he's wAYY to big for his poor horse!

  • @BreyerGurl09 i believe that is the least of peoples worries..horses can carry up to a third of their body weight...forget about how hes to big and focus on the pain he is giving his horse

  • @MsKenzie999 I know, but still too much weight can get to serious and he looks ridiculous on tht horse. i think i realized the pain, no one else was talking about how he is huge for his horse.

  • @BreyerGurl09 you ever seen a bloke called david deptford riding one of his small horses? davids even taller and hencher lol hahaha

  • @NaturalHorseman2011 haha noo but id feel bad for the horse:(

  • I would have told him off for hacking on that poor horse's mouth right then and there. Who cares who he (thinks he) is, this is wrong.

  • poor horse! pulling in his mouth like that with that kind of bit...

  • @Horsepassion4life

curb bits are mechanically made to exert a leverage kind of pressure. therefore the pressure is not directly to the mouth. You can do much more damage with a simple snaffle.

    please check your facts.

  • @jenny50ify I know what they are disigned 4.. I had horses :p but I've never used them that way.. I mean that's really rude!

I've always took the right bit for the right horse. They don't have the same mouth, so you have to choose the right one... It's not a question of damaging the mouth here.. it's a question of damaging the hole horse! Makes me sad to see things like that... even more in competitions :(

  • F***** B***** ! I Hate this Guy !!!!!

  • How can the producers guilty of anything, they are just showing what is there...REAL, nothing fabricated or falsifying, proof is in the pudding!!!!! I'm done making comments, prob will be removed anyway ;P

  • Violation of his intellectual property???? WTF, what about the horses physical well-being? Who is representing the poor horse? This really sickens me!!!!

  • Let's put a bit in your mouth & do that & see if it doesn't hurt ;P

  • Why wouldn't you want anyone to post this? Most people want their vids posted to share what they do, etc. You must be ASHAMED about what you do & how you treat these beautiful animals. It makes sick to see this kind of treatment! Any any judge or otherwise to look beyond this treatment is just as wrong! It's all about ego, why anyone would look up to anyone who mistreats any animal like this shouldn't be able to be around them! Most trainers I look up to with an exception to a very few!!!!!!!!!

  • How cruel people are to these wonderful horses. just to inflate their egos. This is why I don't attend horse shows anymore.

  • don't ever call yourself a true and fair horseman!!!

  • Rollkur, the horse is suffering!

  • I hate this!!!

  • Fucking IDIOT

  • Well to me it just looks like he's creating braces as opposed to allowing the horse to understand what to do. Probably explains why he isn't one of the big names in reining.

  • so unfair to keep jerking on her this way how much submission do you need??? and look at the angel of her neck so over flexed... I learned cutting and reining from and old horseman Tex Levitt, he was hard as they come on a horse but he was fair and you are not...

  • Craig....why would you do this to your horses how about you put a bit in your mouth & someone yank on it as hard & fast & repeticious as you & see how you feel ..that horse would probably do that without the bit in its mouth they are smart & pleasing caring animals....poor babys..you have no respect for them & their potential & beaty you should be ashamed of yourself...you shouldnt even be around them. Its plain wrong..like i always say theres karma.. then theres God

  • it's horrible, how he can make a 500 kg animal, look so small and helpless.. this video makes me cry, everytime i watch it. i still haven't managed to watch it to the end.

i don't get it.. how can this man, and those defending him, sleep at night? he should have his hands cut off, or at least try getting his own mouth yanked like that.

  • I have read most of the comments on here and most of u have zero idea or clue how these horses are pampered and treated the best an animal could be treated! And obviously have no clue about jerking or anything because once he takes the slack out of the reins and picks up u can pull hard as u want because its the jerk at first that hurts or abuses the horse!! The sad part about yalls comments bout it are all a bunch of crap!! Except for anyone defending Craig!! The natural horsemanship all y'all

  • @jbpainthorses- thank you! horses are so tough! he just wanted to send a message to that horse to make her put her head down!

  • @BREYERKID Idiot!

  • Mr. Schmersal, if you think this video defames you, ruins your reputation, WHY do you ride this way? If you wish to protect your reputation, don't do the things that would destroy it. Epona TV did not destroy your rep - you did. They just showed how you REALLY are. Your clients deserve to know how you destroy their horses and their businesses. Grow up!

  • WEll, here's another reining trainer off my list.

  • Absolutely disgraceful and horrible, how can this be condoned anywhere, the guy is a total jerk!

  • Not in any way condoning what is going on here, but the knee is wrapped to prevent injuries from the knees hitting each other during spins.

  • I seen first hand how far competitors in horse shows will go to win and bring in the big bucks.A friend of mine loved to show her Arabian mare who had a natural long flowing tail and because some trainer felt pressure from his client to win he went into my friends horses stall and cut all the horse's tail hair off.She quit showing after that out of fear!Next time some would do worse.

  • You just don't get the point.Horsemanship is about the horse not the human.Only humans care about winning.Do more with less.I have a BLM mustang that I can ride no bridle no saddle at any gait and direction and do flying lead changes.I did it on horse time not human time and he self loads into the trailer all have to do is open the trailer door.Jaws drop when people see that!

  • @parrot2me- well this horse clearly cant do that

  • disgusting treatment of a horse, no excuses.

  • You backyard people crack me up!!!!! Thanks for a good laugh! I am done here because there is nothing to argue...no harm done. Job well done Craig Schmersal and his fellow trainers! :)

  • Oh dear. Little man syndrome, bullying to get his own way. It's rather sad.

  • I don't know a thing about reining, but I do know enough about equine behavior by owing horses and being around horses over my 28 years that this horse is in pain in his performance and that pathetic human is not riding him the way that this sport is suppose to be performed. That slime should have a bridle in his mouth and treated the same way he is treating that poor horse! Not only should the rider be held accountable, but the judges too for the abuse being done to that horse! Out of room.

  • Has ray hunt ever shown a horse or won anything??? Didn't think so. All the "natural horsemanship" crap is bull and is a huge marketing scheme. If the audience on knew what really goes on behind the scenes of these "natural" trainers...they train just as hard, you just don't see it.

I wouldn't want to step foot in your barn. Your "properly" trained horses would probably kill me due to lack of training. Horses are too big to be treated as a pet and that's how ignorant people get hurt.

  • So sue us asshole! I don't care what you say, that is not a natural self carriage for any horse. That is an avoidance of a harsh bit in harsh hands. So so sad to see such a submissive horse being so brutally abused!

  • evil and no respect to such a beautiful animal...you would nt be allowed near my horse let alone on him !!!!!!!

  • Sadly you are most likely right about Purina caring. Its all about the bottom line and it's results through pain and intimidation.Ray Hunt now he was a true horseman through developing understanding of horses and communication.

  • Do you really think Purina is really going to be affected over 2 horses 5 dogs and 2 cats???? Besides, Purina is smart enough to understand what they see and that there is no harm done.

  • Absolutely disgusting.Just because a trainer gets results this way doesn't make it the right way.I'll be emailing Purina and letting them know I won't be buying anymore of their products for my 2 horses 5 dogs 2 cats and I'll be showing this video to all my friends who have horses too.I say hit them where it hurts the almighty wallet!

  • A trainer once said to me " Everyone wants a broke horse, but dont want to see how its done" and seeing this vid makes me think of him because he did this and spurred his horse to the point of bleeding. All i can think is A Broke horse shouldnt be a Broken one.

  • There was nothing done wrong in this video. The horse was showed what was expected and given a release everytime. PETA and trail riders need to mind their own business...they probably have never rode a horse that is trained.

  • @wld1heather

i dont train my horses this way and mine are very well mannered! good mouthed well ridden horses, i dnt need to pull and jurk there mouths about to get results!!!! i train them PROPERLY !!!! this is discusting horsemanship!!!

just because the horse looks fit and healthy doesnt mask the fact that the rider is abusing it!!!!

thank god u dnt work on my yard or you would be cueing up for state benifits!!!

  • @wld1heather Obviously you know NOTHING about equine behavior or have an ounce of compassion in your body for any living thing other than yourself! Get ur head out of your bum and wise up and open your eyes and see the abuse before you this man was imposing upon this poor animal, wldheather! Humans are pitful!

  • @thelittlevampgurl- YOU no nothing!!!

  • I understand the disliking here, what the video contains is really cruel, horrible animal abuse. But if we click the like instead of dislike, the video will get better ratings, and then get more viewers. The more people who learn about this abuse, the better, because it needs to end.

  • Thank you so much for posting this video!! I have a major problem with the way this guy is treating his horse, and although I know there are some reiners out there who treat their horses nicely, unfortunately A LOT of them are like this :'(

  • He couldn't even tell the horse when he did right?? All he did was just abuse that horse.. Screaming and yelling doesn't work on horses.

  • This video clearly shows abuse and the FEI is in contravention of it's own rules when it takes no action. I have been training horses and riders for more than 60 years and the sad thing is that this man is not the only one using these abusive methods and evidently many people who see the video don't realize he's being abusive. The problem is not only in reining, but also in jumping and dressage. Thank goodness for Epona's watchful eye maybe one day we will stop this horror.

  • ABUSE is a gentle word for what is seen in this video; nothing more nothing less - this trainer is a horse abuser - let him go down in history on that note. Be aware, he is not the only one but that hardly excuses his smug, arrogance now does it? Get off now while you still have dignity left. It's been said that a horse in his most recent show marked poorly, he jerked and pulled in this exact manner before exiting the arena as punishment. Isn't he at fault? BAD MAN.

  • @Schnuffelhasi88 genau richtig gesagt! Geht mir genauso! Western sollte eigtl eine leichte reitweise sein, aber der macht alles kaputt! mir tat echt alles weh, als er seine sporen in das arme pferd gerammt hat und so krass am zügel geruckt hat... das pferd ist längst gebrochen... sowas ist so schrecklich anzusehen... =`{

  • thats bed

  • I'm confused what is going on. can someone nicely explain?

  • @13Gajdos This rider makes the horses mouth tender by "punching" him repeatedly prior to his rundowns. He "tucks" the horses head to an extreme that is not natural or necessary for the horse to perform the requested maneuvers. Even when the horse is doing the requested maneuver, this rider continues to punish the horse for no obvious reason. The kind of "trainer" custom made for PETA. He should not be allowed to ride horses.
