The fact is that the colonists in North America drank as much, or more, tea per capita as the people in England, prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution. What caused the Boston Tea Party was the fact that the British Crown had given a monopoly on the importing of tea to the Colonies to the British East India Company.
Thanks. yes, it was not forcing the drinking. Nor, simply was it the monopoly as I recall, but also putting a tax on tea ('no taxation without representation'). As usual there is a danger of over-simplification.

it's a good thing it was substituted for beer or i would be an alcoholic. i drink at least 10 cups a day. love it.
