I wish more of these planes flew. I like how the wings are on top of the plane. Maybe it should have used two more-powerful engines instead of a thirsty four-engine configuration?
I only got to go in one once. It seemed like a quiet, safe, reliable aircraft, not to mention it was really fast on-takeoff. Too bad they aren't around so much in the States.
The Bae 146 does not have reverse thrust correct. However, its approach speed is around 125 kts and touch down around 7 kts slower. It will then already have its speed brakes deployed plus lift spoilers on top of the wings which will kill the lift and add substantional drag which will "add" weight on the wheels, on top of that the pilot will be using the wheel brakes. All of this will easily bring the aircraft to a relatively speedy stop.
I remember when United Express(operated by Air Wisconsin under contract) used these planes to fly out of O'Hare on various routes. It's one of the very few aircraft that were environmentally friendly. Air Wisconsin retired them in 2006 when United didn't renew the contract and as such AW started flying regional jets under the U.S. Airways Express banner.
I remember when I first saw a BAe 146. It was in the early 80's, and it belong to PSA. The BAe 146 was on approch to LAX runway 24, and I thought I saw a four engine DC-9 or 727. Hey I was a kid, but not to long later I found out it was a new plane.
@Rekku9 Yes and no. They don't have thrust reversers, but they will as well be braked by speedbrakes on the wings and on the very back of the fuselage.
@Rekku9 That is correct. They planes have a low ass landing speed anyway so the brakes can handle slowin the bird down. plus it has huge over wing speed brakes and a large airbake in the tail section.
@Rekku9 You are correct, but the 146/RJ has very large air brakes both above the wing and also a tail cone that splits and folds forwards into two further large air brakes.
United used to operate these planes under Presidential Airways, I believe it was. I flew them a few times from Providence, RI to Charleston, SC. Yes they were very quiet, especially when landing. There did not appear to be any reverse thrust when coming to a stop.

that is the most boring post I have ever seen!

@wl11lam no its because a lot of other aircraft can't handle the steep approach into London City Airport, so they're not allowed

I think the engines have no reverse thrust at all, so they'll be be braked on wheels only. Correct?

@Rekku9 There's an airbrake on the back of the plane too.
MartinHDJ 1 year ago
@Rekku9 No only with wheel brakes. They have an airbrake situated in the tail of the aircraft.
When they're in aproach or in land they open the airbrake and reduce the speed to minium to keep in the air descending to the runway.
Yo can see in this video ( 5q0qTMg2Igk ) the airbrake.
Salutations from Spain.
