Is this really Raposo himself? I know he wrote the song, and I know that he wrote and sang songs like J, Jump Joyful" and "Little Things". But this sounds more like Jack Sheldon, who recorded songs for Schoolhouse Rock..
This was one of my favorite songs ever on Sesame Street. Hearing it now just brings me to tears. It's so well written, so well performed and straight forward. The phrases "Pouring into the bay', 'pouring out on the day" and "You see all the good things growing better every day" in particular. God bless and God rest Joe Raposo. An irreplaceable children's songwriter.
Joe Raposo's biggest hit. Too bad this was never released as a single. It would have climbed the charts nicely. Lots of people thought it was B. J. Thomas singing, but it's good ol' reliable Joe, the in-house pop singer. His most heartfelt performance.
I wasn't born until 1989, so as a kid I didn't see this, but I have this on the Old School DVD and it's fantastic. I love this song and cinematography in the filmed part of it is also terrific, especially the nature shots.
I get emotional thinking about those days. I was in pre-school and kindergarten between the years 1976 - 1978. I remember my mom picking me up at noon, taking me home, making me lunch, and letting me watch tv, usually Sesame Street, while I ate. Joe Raposo's songs were a huge part of Sesame Street. I agree that it all went downhill in the late 80s or early 90s. Kids who were born in the late 80s or later probably don't know what we're talking about.
Same here - '...watching all the good things grow...' is the line that brings back this memory to me instantly! They should have a channel on TV or the Web which showcases ALL of the episodes and clips from Sesame Street during the 1970's!
In this negative post modern age we live in where we have to be paranoid and legalistic, its good to see the Original Sesame Street to comfort us. and show our children a better and more gentle time...
God! I miss the old Sesame Street. They were my education for my first 7 years of life. i love that program in its original form. its great and comforting to know that someone took the trouble to preserve these precious archives. Thank you, thank you. God bless you, man!
Thank you SO much for this post....it was one of the songs i knew by heart as a kid...every time i would see it on Sesame Street I would belt it out at the top of my lung lol...I've missed this one.
Wow!!! I so remember this. I watched Sesame Street as a child in the 80s, at the time I had no idea that many of the skits were from the 70s and just replayed. I never knew who Joe Raposo was or that he was the one who created all these songs. Now at the age of 30 with a 2 y/o who watches Sesame Street, I can really appreciate it and what it meant for me. I've been making sure that my son gets to watch not only the new stuff but all the classics too and he loves them all. Thanx for posting!
i remember another song. im not sure if its from joe raposo but all i remember is that the song goes "THATS WHAT PEOPLE DO ALL DAY, PEOPLE WORK AND PEOPLE PLAY" its showing different people with different jobs that help the people. who ever has it please post it or if its up there tell me the title so i can check it out. thanks!
This is my all-time favorite Sesame Street song - and I love many of them. I remembered the 1st 2 verses of this song, even though I haven't heard it in 30-some years. It's great to see it again.
So sad that he passed away. God, exactly 20 years...I would've Loved to've tried writing to him & thanking him for all those memorable songs. Sounds corny, but he really did help write the sound track to our childhoods. (though I'm fairly sure he must've heard his share of that) Great post!
sesame street today really sucks then how it used to be in my childhood. I grew up in the 80s and this clip here was one of my favorites of all times. sometimes i sing this song while im in the shower.
I started singing this at the Hess station while I was filling up, imagine my surprise when 2 other customers joined right in, word for word. The trumpet work on this is exceptional.
As a Joe fan, I think that's my favorite comment of all time. I have a meeting with Joe Raposo's bassist Bob Cranshaw and his percussionist Danny Epstein Monday this coming week, to reminisce about Raposo together. This trumpeter may still be around, and if so, I'd like him to know what you've said here. I'll ask them what his name is. These men remember well working with Joe, and are ALWAYS glad to hear we care about and remember their performances. Both alive and still working. Luv em :)
(And I am nobody special - just a fan of Joe's hoping to collect and compile the memories of those men who worked with him all these years. Since I live in NYC now, it's not difficult to meet with them - but they are incredibly gracious to agree to talk to a nobody about their work, so that's how I do it, and I thank them for it. I'm just a fan like everyone else here, and do this as a service for us all, who love Joe's music. PS: Joe's guitarist, says Mr. Cranshaw, was named Jimmy Mitchell.
Joe really threw himself full-throttle into this song vocally. I wish "A Little Bit" had been released as a pop song. I consider it his best vocal performance.
I think it's "Little Bit" with no "A" at the beginning (I apologize for typing it wrong). BMI's database is having trouble this morning so I can't check yet, but when the database is up and running again I will, and I'll post it here for you :)
Bravo! Thank you for posting this - I remember this song from when I was a kid in the 1970's. Classic then and a real classic now! One of my favorite Sesame Street ballads!
I hate that they used this in the altered episode #1 on the Old School boxed set. I want my CTW programs unaltered! Negotiate for those rights, and make us happy! Peace.
You know what also pisses me off! They took a whole bunch od short classic Sesame Street cartoons and they added stupid modern sound effects and music to them that don't fit at all. On the "Old School" DVD set, watch the "Boy fishing for the alphabet" cartoon. They added this stupid music to it. The original had no music at all.
Oh, yes, tell me about it! They started descecrating the clips shortly before "Elmo's World" started. As if they needed to dumb down the original clips because the average age of the viewers went down to 2 years from 4 years—thus the format change. Please, Sesame Workshop or PBS, cancel the show before it wreaks any more havoc! Peace.
Hey, mstatz, if you really want to talk about descecrated clips from SS, look at the updated version of "You're My Baby" (shivers)! The music is actually all right in that one & I personally don't mind that they replaced the breastfeeding with bottles but seriously, I don't knoew who the producers got to replace Joe Raposo, but the new vocalist CAN'T SING FOR SHIT!
i recently bought the Old School Sesame Street dvd box set (the season premiere episodes from the 1960-1974). When I saw this on it for the first time in YEARS, i literally got choked up and teary eyed! I didn't know there was a Joe Raposo CD, i'm going to buy it tomorrow! thanks!
I adore this song!! I learned it as a child growing up in the 70's and I sing it to my daughter now who's 2. Honestly, to see it again made me cry in a good way.
It's great that I'm now able to share all these videos I recorded over 20 years ago with the whole country. I was one year old when Sesame Street came on the air, so my childhood memories of the show are from the early to late 70's (the BEST years of Sesame Street)!
Does anyone have the Raposo song "trying...and trying again". I remember that one and can still hear the song in my head but I never got it. Do you remember the cat trying to climb the stairs and the turtle that tried to turn itself over? It ended with a little boy trying to catch a football and he finally catches it. He then jumps up and down with excitement. So cute!
I have it on an old Beta tape (broadcast from 1985). I only have it converted to VHS. I don't have it converted to DVD or computer yet. I'll keep you posted.
I am too! I swear. I loved this when I was 4 and think it's just as beautiful now. This was by far always my favorite Raposo song. Thanks to mstaz for posting!

Whoops, my fault that I didn't know about the replacement (since I don't own the DVD). Still, putting it on the Episode One disk was a brilliant idea...
Thaks for the info. I wonder what it replaced. Do you remember Roposo's song "Flying?" The video had birds flying into the horizon in slow motion. It was absolutely my fav Raposo nature clip. I've yet to see it here on you tube and hope someone uploads it
The rooster at the beginnig of this is nice looking. I did not know they could be black.
