  • love the video! i am looking 2get in2 bee keeping in Ireland. come across your video and had to log in2say well done you! loooove the bear fence, my family use those for cows-Irish farmers! oh well at least in Ireland i wont have to worry about bears and skunks LOL so boring!!!!!!!!!

hope u r still enjoying your bees, good luck.

i have to go find a video/info more Ireland related-wonder what we have to watch out for in Ireland-too much rain maybe?

  • i have never raised bees but would like to, how often do you harvest the honey?

  • I harvest once a year in Sept. I will be harvesting over the next few days probably. Sometimes I take a little earlier cause I just can't resist.

  • something is happening U shuld run like hell...

  • so what dose that one way door thing do at 5:05?

  • What do you mean? I don't understand the question.

    Alfred

  • well you said you installed that wood thing on yer hive and its a one way door for the bees,so what dose this do for the hive?

  • Ok I see. What it does is to allow the bees to leave the supers above but not go back up into the supers. That way when I go to take off the supers in order to harvest the honey I don't have a lot of bees in the way.

  • At the time 7:06 , I see a squirrel behind you. :D

  • Fence is pretty easy to construct I would suggest that you use a solar charger mine requires an outlet so it isn't very mobile and I have this extension cord that runs accross the yard.

Never did figure out what the fuss was about but no big deal as it passed.

The posts are just part of putting your stuff out there. I do recomend seeing the Nudebeekepers videos pretty funny.

    Alfred

  • i too have bears in my area, and i like that you showed us your elect fence, as i will have to have one as well.

did you ever determine what was causing the bees to act up at the end of the clip?

thx for the vids, ignore the rude comments people post, i get a ton of them. eric of gardenfork

  • Land Sakes Mr... its a beehive, not fort knox... and always remember... only sissies wear bee suits.

  • You Guys are a hoot... and just a little crazy!

But to address your comments I have Bears that come into my yard every year in the fall, so that is what the fencing is for.

From your videos you nut heads have your hives in a heavily forested area, Haven't you had any problems with wild life? Maybe your naked naturalness is scaring the Bears away?

Like your video posts and I look forward to more.

  • This is definitely your first year.

    1) you need to learn how to light a smoker

2)you dont have much room to work

    3) its called a hive tool

  • i think maybe the reason that you have so much activity at the very end there is that you may have killed several bees in your attempt to realighn your burr comb, as they send a death pheremone into the air. just a guess, but as soon as you find burr, it really ought to be removed.

  • All of the activity at the end of the video was the next day.....

    Alfred

  • After you sealed the upper chamber the bees had no more place to store additonal nectar which might explain why you had so much burr comb under the cover.

  • Yes I didn't give them enough room to grow in the brood area, additionally there was too much space under the feeder. I am now using a completely different type of hive. Top entrance with bottom screened and slatted bottom as well. Better ventilation so no need for the shim, less space to build burr comb. I have also been making more frequent checks on the hives so that I catch it earlier.

    Alfred

  • Great first time bee hive video! u sell comb honey?

  • I haven't had enough to sell yet. This year I added 3 hives that I got as swarms, but they probably won't produce much if any this year.

There are others who produce honey and comb in the area. contact the northern colorado beekepers association.

    Alfred
