Yes - the thermal underwear did not do him justice for such a thin, skinny man. It is funny to see these old videos. Mick had his own unique stage presence - no doubt about it.
I discovered the Stones when I was about 12, but the first Philly show was my first at age 19. Saw them 5 times on this tour, ha ha. Such awesome memories and the audio is great. Thanks for posting.
Seriously, Mick looks a complete twat in those leggings and knee pads..and did he have to wear the huge balls protector as well? Some say he stuffed a couple of socks in there to 'enhance' his manhood...LOL!
Great performance, however, Keith is really cooking on this one.
STONES , KICKING OFF THERE 81 TOUR , ( IT WAS GREAT , IN PHILLY , WITH MY BROTHER RIP. ROB) I KNOW SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD OF HAD YOU ! , ANOTHER ONE BRO ! UR LITTLE BROTHER GLEN. ***
I saw the tour in Orlando at the Tangerine Bowl. Van Halen opened for them and it was the only show that they did. David Lee Roth said he had something for the local newspaper music critic. He then turned around and shot the crowd a moon! lol. GREAT TIMES!. No assigned seating, I was right up front on the barrier for the Stones. This is the tour they used the cherry picker and Mick wore those crazy leggings and knee pads. I think he even had a cape on at one point. 18 years old,
@dockaiser I heard a couple of really bad intro's from Keith. I remember him playing Brown sugar's intro so badly as the concerts opener in Amsterdam (2003), that I couldn't believe it, haha. He was very drunk but played better as the concert went along.
Blues are usually on 8 or 12 measures. Some few are on 16 measures. This one . surprisingly has 17 measures: there is 1 dummy measure before the last block of 4 measures. It is 3 blocks of 4 measures, 1 single measure, and the last block of 4 measures. It is fun to check: just count 1,2,3,4 along the music, for each measure , in one hand, and on the other hand totalize the measures. The middle solo is on 12 measures(as well as the coda, the end solo) The intro is on 5 measures !!!
I lovbe the Stones for playing so rough, bluesy cool. I think Keith plays BL here in Open G Tuning which he does otherwise never. Love this version. The whole concert is as first concert of the tour very interesting. They play the "Satisfaction" song at the show here like Jumping Jack Flash but Jagger sings Satisfaction on it, awesome.
At one point during the show Mick says 'we're just doing a little clean up" now I know why. Look at all the crap people we're throwing up on stage. Mick almost gets hit with something at 2:28!
hillbilly, i was also at both shows in Philadelphia (i live here) What an experience, huh ? I have front row pix from the show and the Daily News CITY HAS STONES FEVER. Phila is the best stadium rock show city there is !!
I can see why they changed the front part of their stage later on in the tour. This early conception was a disaster waiting to happen. I think they extended the cat walk leading out to the sides of the stadium too later in the tour.
I like how at 2:20 Mick says "1 more" but then Keith points 2 fingers to indicate 2 more. I'm no musician but I didn't hear 2 more!
I just realized that there's no sax in this version but still a great way to introduce the song. Ronnie's solo's are swesome.
why do i recall a "tongue" being the catwalk leading into the crowd? i was at this show (up front as well) and seem to remember it that way...or was it just the contact high...hmmmmmm.....
Damn, I can't remember if I was at the first or second show in philly, I think the second...I loved this tour, loose but not too loose. Hey, they didn't play to a tape like most bands do today to some degree. I have the first 6 or so songs from this show on vhs..my first concert ever.
In Philly 1981 they Stones kind of "rehearsed" a little - I love the show for that reason - alternate versions of the songs certainly rough but I like it, also some significant mistakes during that concert (I think for example "Time is on my Side" start fucked up.
They did that often in their first concerts in the 70ies/ begin of 80ies, compare for example 1972 first concert in Vancouver. It was all not as perfectly planned as today.
They also started playing "Shattered" and had to stop because either Keith or Ron screwed up. So they started again. I was on the field and you could hear Keith yelling at the crew to "turn up his fucking amp". Even though it was truly the first commercial megashow/megatour of its type it still maintained the garage band sound/image despite being an almost 20 year old band at the time.
I think that makes also a little the charme of the Stones: They can fuck up shows or they play like nobody else. But even when they fuck it up it sounds interesting. I don't know why but they have that certain something (but only until 1981).
@stonescourt3 heard it it rocks better than altamont or any other version, seen it on 'lets spend the night together'great show thats where richards clubs a guy at end of show with guitar than keeps playin like nothin happen halarious would of loved to been there i heard they lost there enthusiam between 75, 79 with drug catchin up to them, then in 80 81 picked up pace somewhat sober and as energetic as ever
Disagree until 1981 (later they did Vegas unfortunately). Even when they play "wrong" I find it more exciting than virtuos players like Page, Clapton and the likes.
Was this the first or second day in Philly in 1981......Sept 25th or 26th? I was on the field on the first day at JFK. This was the last tour the Stones were still spitting out raw R&R and I saw them at least 8 times after this show over the course of 25 years.
I lived in NJ at the time....skipped a day of high school to see it. My seats were originally in the nose bleeding section and then we moved onto the field at the right moment (I think when everyone started booing for Journey to get off stage). I was about 25 feet from the stage near the center (smack in the middle of a bunch from the Pagans Motorcycle Club). Greatest Stones show I have ever seen. Where else can you get a copy of this particular concert?
was from northern NJ near NYC. Took a train from Penn Station in Newark, stayed at a friends pad at Univ of Penn......didn't have enough money to buy a ticket for day # 2 because I bought about 6 t-shirts of which I still have today stored away.
I saw the '81 tour in Dallas Texas @ the Cotton Bowl (ZZ Top & Fabulous Thunderbirds opened up!). I still have the concert t-shirt too! I've seen the band only once since then, in 1997. The tix now are sooooo expensive. I would like to see them ONE more time though, before they retire or die.
I was born in '69 but I still feel like I grew up with these guys. Quintessential rock 'n roll. Such mind-blowing charisma - absolutely love their sense of humour. Such a darkly mischevious band.
Man this is a great tune to jam to when ur in a band!!!!Man i love the 81 tour,They did a lot of outdoor gigs, and man there aint nothin like going to an outdoor evening concert man!!!!! Wish I was there!
The Stones always rock. Even look at them today. 1.5 million fans in that Brazilian concert they had... incredible. They have this aura that attracts people to them. So many contrasting, often clashing personalities (Mick and Keith by 1981 were not on very good terms, and by 1984 didn't even talk to each other..).
omfg not this again. you didn't go to the 1981 tour. you weren't old enough. secondly, stop going from video to video looking for comments I made weeks or months ago. grow the fuck up.
this is a great song and a great recording, and most here agree with me! I have plenty to say. Fucking stop me.

2:19 Mick goes "one more" but gets corrected by Keith immediately ...haha.
Strangely enough, I never heard Keith play anything wrong.
Does anyone know a concert where he had a major fuck up, - besides being fucked up ?
dockaiser 1 year ago
@dockaiser
Yeah major fuck ups have been:
- Wembley 1982. They totally lost the intro of "She is So Cold"
- Satisfaction at Philly 1981. The band plays JJF and Jagger sings Satisfaction to it.
