How come this woman is not the world highest paid singer? I have never heard anything like this in my life. The last time I purchased a cd was 12 years ago, and since then I have been fed up with the crap I have been listening to lately. Rachelle Ferrell said earlier this year she is in the studio right now working on a new album and I have to say she is the only one on this planet that has convinced me enough to actually spend money again, and it will be spent only on her cd. Period.
She has astounding, PERFECT voice control! It is truly her instrument. The Creator/Creative Force has to be extremely happy with Rachelle for using her talents to the max!!!

I just saw her LIVE tonight at the Blue Note and cried the whole time...incredible!!! I got to hug her afterwards and I am basically able to die of happiness now. :-D

The mouth came FIRST, then other instruments.The body--drumming, then singing is the ultimate instrument. Good instrumental teachers will tell their students "SING." Listen to indigenous music, African, Islanders, etc.
I have listened to this version many times and it always sounds innovative. I enjoy the liberties she takes with every flowing range of sounds se uses. You can see the Wholly Sound of All resonating in her. I she has my respect.

@halaluani Co-signing. She has an 8 octave range and sings with very traditional scat influences. Comparing her to any other singer is like comparing a bi-plane to a space shuttle. Her brother, Russ Barnes, has an amazing voice as well.

Great voice, but in my opinion she overdoes this beautiful song. It sounds as if she wanted to show off with her vocal range and she tries so hard to blow it out of the water, that it becomes too harsh to listen to. Straining for high notes isn't always a good thing. Nevertheless, with all due respect, her capacity and potential are immense :)
@Lipaj18, We Rachelle fans appreciate your critique. But, first of all her voice is not great. That is a word that is not able describe her unique vocal ability. What you describe as "over doing" it is called creative liberty............and there is no other female/male artist that can come close to achieving her level. I recommend you hear her performing Mi Voila Suel...your heart will absolutely melt.
Who needs a horn if you can sing eh? (I'm Canadian "eh") I hope instrumentalists stop their grumbling about singers, who sometimes surpass instrumentalists. How is a sax melody "better" than a vocal melody? They're both great and we don't have to decide, one over the other like a friend of mine, who is a bigot that way.

This is vocal jazz. This is her style.
Vocal jazz is not about only singing, it's not classic jazz. She gives express feelings with vocals, not with singing, that's what it's all about.

i heard autumn leaves for the first time in this video. now i listened to 10 different versions from 50's and 60's but i still think this on is the best... amazing!

Seriously, i love jazz, i love this tune, but this performance, i absolutlely hate it, i hate her gurning, she is totally over performing, it borders on the ridiculous.
