  • The pain does not ease at all. it gets more unbearable as time passes. Ive gotten 7 of these motherfuckers in me and the longest ive been w/ one is 3 weeks.

  • we need to preserve sterility of the tube before inserting it. dont we? why did she curl the tube without wearing gloves?

  • @SuperKingNapoleon Not necessarily. This is a clean procedure, not a sterile one because the GI tract is already home to plenty of bacteria.

  • At the end of this video she says "the discomfort eases after a little while" NOT TRUE. It is very uncomfortable and after a few minutes you may experience sore throat, and you may need pain medication, at least this is what happened in my case. I had to have that tube in me for 20 hours..It is not fun, but if you are a sport you'll get through it. The trick to insert this tube the best way is to do it quickly otherwise it can be a slow torture. Good Luck.

  • last couple of years the nurse... i'm not sure if she was... accidentaly insert the tube into my nasopharynx, cause me to gag. they pull it out harshly & in the end i choked, vomit lots of blood. i didnt even realise they actually did some mistake. i should have watch this video earlier. damn!!

  • @beaverfeaver12 the formula im using is called peptamen and im using a size 8 too :] i now have the hang of it but the first few days were bad. how long have you been on it for? ive been about 3 weeks.

  • Comment removed

  • @jityr2 it only hurts during insertion. Removal is very easy and the first couple of times it feels very weird on your nose and throat but u get used to it

  • I started this today. The next month or 2 isn't gonna be fun

  • @NoobsPwning yeah man im doing the same thing, the formula im using is called tolerx. But believe me after inserting this tube your self for a while you will get used to it. What size is the tube your inserting? luckily i am able to use a size 8 which is what they use for babies. so its not as painful =)

  • The NG tube insertion is not a sterile technique. The rational behind it is your stomach is an acidic enviroment, your mouth is an extremely contaminated area!! clean gloves should be enough.

  • I'm a nursing student and first time I watched an actual NGT insertion... it wasn't pleasant as this one AT ALL. :\\\ Poor patients :(

  • @jumeau1 very true, I noticed right after I sent the comment. Thanks!

  • no gloves... seriously?

  • @natesurg7 she had gloves on the whole time after she lubricated the tip

  • the girl already touched the tip of the tube that is STERILE.. o my we may consider the tube UNSTERILE

  • @jinimaykel NG tube insertion is not a sterile procedure. it's not like an IV or Foley or other sterile procedures. you are advised, of course, to wear clean gloves, but not sterile gloves.

  • nice and detailed actual demonstration.very helpful.thanx for the upload..

  • This shit is painful... imagine shedding tears but not actually crying whilst the most intense burning occurs in your nose.

  • I've had this done to me 7 times and it's not pleasant at all.

  • If you're on that tube for days, does it hurt the whole time? Or only during insertion and removal.

  • @jityr2 insertion and removal is definitely the most uncomfortable part. while it's in there most people get somewhat used to it, but it's never comfortable having a tube down your nose but if it's inserted properly it should not "hurt" the whole time.

  • I've wondered into the weird part of youtube again...

  • I recently had this done as well. i had no numbing spray, and the tube was painful going up my nose!

  • This is amazing. Our "practice humans" do not even allow us to insert the tube much at all. So it was great to see it done on a live person. THANK you so much for the patient who allowed this to happen on camera and be shared! And thank you for the person who did this and put it up!

  • I had this done today. I vomited everything because of the tube so it was pretty useless to insert the tube at all... It was horrible.

  • I had this done today. I vomited everything because of the tube so it was pretty useless to insert the tube at all... It was horrible.

  • Jesus....that's not enough water!!!!

  • Worst experience ever. cried like a bitch hahah fuck that shit was horrible

  • ok

  • I had one in for 3 weeks, I had it inserted on 4 different occasions, most painful thing I have ever experienced. Simply horrific that they do this to you while you are awake.

  • when i had this done to drain blood from my stomach due to a tear in the lining, the first nurse pushed so damn hard and still couldn't get it in and i felt/heard a crunching/bone cracking sound in my head and started to gush blood all over my chin and chest. then they came back in with a male nurse and he jammed that sucker in good and it felt like i was choking. i was teary eyed the whole time and it was the worst experience in my life. second was having a lung collapsed 70%+ for over 6 hours

  • @T1000HD plus i had it it in for 3 days and after the first day your nose and throat hurt so bad. i slept maybe 4 hours total during those 72 hours.

  • @T1000HD They can give you Chloraseptic Spray or a numbing spray for the back of your throat to ease your discomfort. Ask for it next time. Be assertive and tell the nurse to get a Dr.'s order for it because you have been there/done that and have the t-shirt for how uncomfortable they can be and would like to get some relief. Bad, bad nurse.

  • @T1000HD yikes, that's horrible! we're learning how to do this in school, and, hopefully, we'll come out knowing how to do it better than the people who inserted yours...

  • @T1000HD yikes, that's horrible! we're learning how to do this in school, and, hopefully, we'll come out knowing how to do it better than the people who inserted yours...

  • ive had a PH probe once its not fun its feels like you are choking on it

  • I had this done 5 times. 4 times, no problem. Not comfortable for a short time but i have had worse pain. 5th time, the nurse messed up and somehow caused very bad nose bleed. I am seeing my ENT to see if she screwed up 2 different sinus surgeries, like deviated septum, etc. It worked once she got it in. Don't believe all the negative comments. This procedure is usually only done if throwing up is the other option. I would rather have the NG tube than vomitting all the time after surgery!

  • i get right for the 1st time :D

  • the worst experiance of my life , to have the tube insurted i had to have formulat for 7 months and i would never have it done again

  • Having an NG tube was the WORST physical experience of my life. I've had very painful medical procedures done on me, but I'd take any of them again, over having this done. Terrible feeling...especially the insertion *shudders*

  • once you've done the aspiration, then you check the pH,then you replace the GI aspirate?or you disgaurd this?I'm really needing NGTube skills as I graduate from 1 qtr of a 4 qtr LVN program soon & I don't feel I know this skill AT ALL!

  • They did not do any of this when the tried to do this to me. I was in so much pain and I started bleeding everywhere from my nose and mouth.

  • Thanks for the video!!! Im grateful :)

  • Im 16... Had this for Colon removal. Failed 4 times. Twice it came back out my nose, causing me to throw up atleast 20 times. I was sick anyways but its probably worse then Ulcerative Colitis itself. It isnt bad at all once they get it in though.

  • Just had this done. First attempt was a disaster and by looking at this I can see why. 1) was not told to place my head or shoulders properly; 2) tube was obviously too big; and 3) wasn't given water to drink when tube passed through gag reflex area. Finally, I couldn't breathe and literally ripped the tube out myself. Second time succeeded with another nurse who used smaller bore tube, bent my head correctly and had me sip water. An awful procedure for the patient.

  • @serineh5 It does not have to be sterile at all!!

  • i need a ng tube for a test in a few days and i am terrified. the test is important and i have to have it. i am scared out of my mind. i dont feel that i can manage this or be calm. please advise someone!!

  • @DasTuppen the doctrs can give you local anasetic , what test did they do?

  • thank you

  • NG tube insertion is ABSOLUTELY a sterile procedure, this video is majorly flawed

  • @serineh5 why does it need to be sterile? Food isn't.

  • NG tube insertion is ABSOLUTELY a sterile procedure, this video is majorly flawed

  • is it just me or does the lady sound like oprah? LOL

  • that looks so scary. x_x

  • NEVER. FUCKING. AGAIN.

  • 2 seconds in *subscribe*

  • The most accurate is the x ray ?

  • i had a naso gastric when i was anorexic and it fucking hurt!!! never again!!!!! i swear on my life i have post traumatic stress coz of it and am terrified everytime i go to hospital i'm gonna get one

  • no gloves?????????????/

  • No usa tecnica esteril. Por lo demás muy bien. Aunque tb podia enseñar los otros metodos para saber si está en estomago o no. (meter aire y a la vez, auscultar el estómago o meter el extremo en agua y ver si burbujea o no burbujea)

  • i had to get one when i couldnt drink LITERS of this COLYT LE shit pror to surgery that taste like salt water.they chased me down held me down forced my nostrils open and put it in all the while yelling swallow swallow!!NG tube insertions are torturous in my experience.i was 13

  • @mrpapafunky7879 Yeah, i had some prick hold me down when i was younger to put one of these in, i kicked him in the head but he was only trying to help me but i didn't know any better but it bloody hurt.

  • #1 pt safety...the siderails aren't even up ;-/

  • It can't be that bad of a procedure, if it is commonly used in premature babies who have problem with suck and swallow. And full term newborns, who have no problems bottle feeding but have to learn how to breastfeed. In the early 80's nurse put a NG tube in me, while waiting on my mom to decide if she wanted to breastfeed or bottle feed. She took me home at 24 hours old and she bottle fed me. I had bowel problems for the 1st 12 months of my life most likey caused by the type of formula I had.

  • I had one of this 15 days after a septoplasty, it was like one of the worst experiences ever!!!!!!!!

  • i searched NGT for NextGenTactics

  • @somebodyindahouse ha tru, thats wat happened to me :)

  • i had one of these... when they put it in i puked

  • Good video. It helped me out a lot.

  • you only do an xray with a dobhoff

  • It's much easier when the patient is not responsive and doesn't know we're putting in an NG tube. :)

  • i had one in , hated it :(

  • @QuelloFreddo I pulled mine out.

  • you missed wearing the gloves to avoid infection

  • if only all the patients took it that easy! he's the perfect patient haha

  • thats looks uncomfortable

  • how come she's not wearing gloves?

  • @TheRN25 hmm... good question!

  • very good, but still, clean gloves (not sterile) would help but yeah very good :)

  • Very good demo!

  • Why is this done?

  • @hyancinth70 - when someone cant swallow but they need nutrients, this is a way for them to get nutrients.

  • @hyancinth70 to help patients give there oral medications easily and also it helps to drain any secretions on the stomach or digestive tract

  • excellent demo. I liked it

  • Dang, that guy is tough. When I had this done I was crying and vomiting. It hurts a lot in the throat.

  • =) Lubricating the tip of the catheter doesn´t anestethise the naso/oro mucosa. The Mrs. Should had used some topical anestesic on the nose before inserting the tube.

  • Nice

  • muy buen video, esta el procedimiento muy bien explicado, gracias

  • I hate having this done

  • why do people need to have this done ?

  • @11bookham For people who can't take food orally, for whatever reason (usually after surgery, in cancer patients if they don't want to eat after chemo, and occasionally for eating disorder patients if they refuse to eat).

  • nasogastric? It means the tube goes till the stomach? : o

    (sorry for my ignorance :x)

  • @biaskatergirl yes you are right

  • This is mostly right besides the fact that she did not have gloves on for insertion, nor did she have the "chin to chest" step./ This is supposed to be performed throughout the entire procedure to prevent inserting the tube into the lungs. NOT WITH THE HEAD BACK!! Please dont make this mistake!!!

  • @TazMay17 i'm pretty sure she has gloves on and she told him to flex his had forward.

  • shouldn't the measuring of the length to be inserted be done aseptically? the woman was not wearing gloves at the time, and inserting it might introduce microorganisms. am i wrong?

  • @dehinslister

true, but it's going into an area, the gut, that is filled with micro-organisms and immune cells anyway, plus we eat stuff every day loaded with microorgansims: cheese, yogurt, etc. Plus the pH in the stomach kills most organisms anyway. Not quite as important as dealing with penetrations to the bloodstream, IV's, central lines, etc.

  • very informative

  • i am not used to seeing the NG placed so slowly!! pediatric patients, NO WAY will let you go that slow...we drop em fast and hope for the best!!

  • @riagomez06 you can say that again!!

  • Research shows that lidocaine jelly to numb the area first helps reduce the pain involved. Also the measurement is done according to what has always been done but there is NO research to support it. Lates research shows a placement halfway between xiphoid and unbilicus to be more accurate. In unconscious patients a CO2 detector and/or PH paper should be used to confirm placement. The KUB is still the gold standard for placment; especially in patients who have no cough or gag reflex.

  • Awesome Video, Very helpful

  • Oh NG Tubes are awful. I've had them three times. Worst thing EVER!

  • First you must assess also the air patency. Great Vid, Great help.

  • I had one put down me when I was 8 just after I began my chemotherepy treatment, It was an experience I will never forget. It was awful. They should sedate kids to have this done.

  • Is that David Topps from NOSM?!!

  • I had this done a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't bad, but it isn't an experience that I am in hurry to repeat..

  • this helps for nursing students like me..

  • i had this done to me once... well... 4 times exactly, my life is screwed up, i have kidney failure... eTC.... well yeah, it hurts like a bitch, ask anyone that has ever done it,...

  • Yeah I have had it many times, luckly most were done while I was knocked out (in an op') but the ones I had while awake - They wern't very fun. It's like having a finger put down your throat except you can't "stop it" from going down. If that makes sense.

  • it's not fun but its not awful

i just chugged the whole time and it was easier

  • i put one in myself every night but the past couple nights i just cant get into the mental state of doing it. I am going to get it tonight though i can feel it....:D

  • I would agree that it is not a sterile procedure- you don't breathe sterile air or eat sterile food. We don't do it aseptically on our ward- it's not Trust Policy to do so..

  • i'm going to have this test this saturday!

    wish me luck lmao! xD

  • When I was 12 I had to wear this NG tube for two weeks in the hospital. My intestine got twisted so my stomach acid was building up so they had to suck it out of me with a machine 24/7.

  • NG tube insertion is a clean technique. It is not sterile. Also, the only sure way to check placement is a chest x-ray.

  • @freddiefry17 How about taking some gastric content and check for its PH? I believe we can't get some gastric content from the lungs.

  • @freddiefry17 : Correct i agree with you....

  • @freddiefry17 Unnecessary irradiation. Insufflation, auscultation and aspiration of gastric content is sufficient.

  • what else can you do if the patient cannot swallow? coz i've seen once before during my rle where an old man ( i mean really old) was admitted in the ER and needs NGT. it was so frustrating to observe since the nurse was having difficulty inserting the tube coz the patient can't swallow when told to. If i'm not mistaken the old man was also diagnosed with dementia. I'm not saying that the nurse was incompetent, it's just that the patient was being difficult and sometimes combative...

  • Auscultation is the least accurate way of ensuring placement.

    The best ways would be:

    - to check the pH

    - to assess the aspirate

    - to measure the length of the tube based on the tape marker

She should be wearing gloves. Just for standard precaution.

  • @flippizzle I think she is

  • @flippizzle and of course a chest xray! golden rule guys

  • This was the best.... I really understand it well, than my instructor talking...

  • NG tube insertion is a clean techqnique.. it does not have to be aseptic because the stomach is not sterile and masks are not required, only gloves.

  • how bout wearing a mask?isn't it required?

  • Comment removed

  • People have been debating about whether NGT insertion requires an aseptic technique. Well, I still stick with my answer. We use the aseptic measures. That's what we did at school. It's not unusual to have the presence of normal flora in the body. What we do not want was to introduce opportunistic microorganisms to the body.

Palag is right. auscultation should be done to check for the placement. I know four methods on how to check for the placement of the NGT tube.

  • of course you wear gloves. no one in their right mind would do this without gloves but it is not an aseptic technique. it is clean.

  • NGT insertion should be done using aseptic technique. This is an invasive procedure and we have to lessen possibilities for infection. Don't you guys know that one of the main causes for contamination usually occurs because of the care givers inability to observe aseptic measures or perhaps any measure that prevents cross contamination. Handwashing is one way of preventing spread of infection.

  • and i guess that all that you eat and breathe must be asseptic right?? In my land this is a clean procedure, not a asseptical...

  • sterile technique is not used in nasogastric tube insertion, its unnecessary because the nasal cavity and the GIT already has resident microorganisms.. Clean technique is used in this procedure.

  • If it is there? can also use litmus paper to determine the pH...this is a nice video.

  • gloves is necessary.

  • huxigirl, melissa 2006 is right, ng tube insertion isnt aseptic, its a clean technique, because the stomach is so acidic theres no need for sterility, im an emergency grad nurse, do em all the time

  • we have just had this in college and were told to treat it as aseptic because before it goes into your stomach it is going through your nose, the back of your throat and your oesophegus before it reaches your stomach so there is a risk of infection in those places but then every country is different but i wouldnt let anyone do it to me with out gloves on i have also completed an infection control module so know about the risk of infection!!!

  • The reason why this technique is a CLEAN technique not an ASEPTIC (or Sterile) one is because your mouth, nose, and stomach aren't sterile places. Think about the food we eat, organisms we inhale, drinks we drink, etc. When was the last time you made sure you were using aseptic or sterile technique while eating or drinking? You do have to use CLEAN GLOVES but they don't have to be special gloves (e.g. catheterization)

  • just melissa 2006

the insertion of a naso gastric tube is in fact an aseptic process and as such then yes gloves should be worn so as not to cos infection or cross contamination as well i am a second year adult nursing student

  • auscultation is important to know if the end of the tube is in the right position.

  • it's going into the stomach with a very acidic ph... you dont have to be sterile, just clean

  • Well it looks easy enough, hope the real deal is as easy for me!

  • She forgot to auscultate for placement...

  • auscultation should be done upon injecting air and it was not shown in the video.
