  • some really good stuff here

  • This is a great video

  • love the video man

  • Good Vids..

  • Good video. Thanks for shared, Very-very Helpull

  • Aloha

  • THE EARTH IS FLAT!!!

  • 138 darkness worshipers?

  • We know now that Eratosthenes was right, but at the time, how did he know the sun was so far away that its rays are essentially parallel? If the sun had been a short distance from a flat earth wouldn't that also produce shadows of different lengths at different latitudes? Perhaps there is additional reasoning, too elaborate for Dr. Sagan to include here, that eliminates that possibility.

  • @gmsherry1953 -that's a very thoughtful comment and question, the kind of thinking that today's institutions of 'higher learning' rarely produce, kudos! In response I would say that your hypothesis on non-parallel sun rays certainly has merit on paper based on simple logic, however, wouldn't you agree that for it to have been plausible in the actual physical world all of the variables you mention would have to be extreme to say the least? very interesting comment, really made me stop to think!

  • @ACELLOFAWARENESS Given a flat earth, and a 7 degree angle over 800 km, the sun is 6,500 km high, or about 4,000 miles. That's much taller than any mountain, well out of the atmosphere -- not an obviously silly height for a large, hot object to be passing through the sky. Of course, a flat earth is disproved other ways -- the horizon; the horizon being farther from a height; approached mountains or masts of approaching ships gradually appearing. No flat-earth model (to be continued)

  • @gmsherry1953 has any explanatory value -- what happens at the edge of the earth, WHY do the sun and moon pass through the sky? And other observations of shadows may contradict the idea of a flat earth and nearby sun. I'm just not sure THIS observation does. I'm glad I made you think! My higher learning is c. 1970 so I'm not sure what is produced today.

  • @gmsherry1953 Interesting thinking. The sun is vastly bigger than the Earth and 800km surface where the light emanates from the sun can be approximated to a flat surface (because the circumference is so vast). So the light reaching that 800km area on earth is technically parallel. You can't calculate how far the source where parallel light emanates. The 7 degree is because the stick is at a 7 degree angle to the sun light.

  • @TemplarX2 I don't understand your comment. Eratosthenes didn't KNOW the sun was vastly bigger than

Earth and vastly distant, did he? He had two choices, a flat earth and a nearby sun, or a curved earth and a distant sun. I'm just not sure how he could decide between those theories based on data of the angle of shadows at noon. I understand that, GIVEN a round earth and a distant sun, the data enabled him to calculate the Earth's diameter. That's clear.

  • @gmsherry1953 Yes two choices. Assuming a flat earth and a close sun, the two sticks will be pendicular to the surface and the difference in angle can be explained by light hitting one stick at zero degree and the other (800 km away) at 7 degrees. For some reason he rightly dismissed that possibility. I thnk he might have made other observations to dismiss that flat earth hypo He could have had very good eyesight and observed sails sinking as ships moved further. This guy was a brain after all.

  • @TemplarX2 I think we agree. In an earlier remark, I said "a flat earth is disproved other ways -- the horizon; the horizon being farther from a height; approached mountains or masts of approaching ships gradually appearing. No flat-earth model has any explanatory value -- what happens at the edge of the earth, WHY do the sun and moon pass through the sky? And other observations of shadows may contradict the idea of a flat earth and nearby sun. I'm just not sure THIS observation does."

  • @gmsherry1953

There wouldn't be shadows, or only faint ones, I think.

  • As if further proof were needed that Carl Sagan is a legend. He can sit in the middle of the desert in a tweed jacket without sweating.

  • Eratosthenes is one smart guy lol

  • i wish i had more hands, to give this 4 thumbs up!

  • This is amazing, I love humanity more than I can say.

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 and humanity is still but a child learning to walk.

  • I love the part about Eratosthenes and his discovery... it really is so inspiring, to think that a man, so long ago with so little information could calculate so much!

  • Does anyone know the name of the song starting at 2:36?

  • Why is there a spambot marking down this brilliant series? I guess its a christian doing it...

  • this man is so peacefull nonbody cou;d dislike him

  • what made him special was he was a poet, he understood the poetry of the star stuff.

  • Votebotting Carl Sagan is a weak as weak can be

  • Carl Sagan,

The man that made the knowledge of the universe available for every human sole.

As he said:' We are made of stardust'.

Carl Sagan takes us back to our origins.

  • sorry if it seems trivial, but i believe you mean "every human SOUL", soles are at bottom of the oceans & your feet/shoes, soul is what we unconsciously call the presence & recognition of the cosmic energy from which we are made

  • @piraat9990 He actually said "star stuff" - Neil Degrasse Tyson said "star dust" - a man semi-mentored by Sagan who's doing his own admirable bit for education and knowledge :D

  • Eratosthenes was a fucking genious... I heard this story before but now will make a mental note to remember that man's name...

I salute you Eratosthenes... I will remember you...

  • wow. i feel soooo not smart right now. lol. even with all the technology available to me now, i probably couldn't have figured that out.

  • Yeah me too lol

  • We should ALL be so much smarter by now...

My childhood education was all about how Jesus died for my sins and how I should get right with God before the end times...

    So sad...

  • I love this guy!

  • Long live flat earth!!!

  • Long live middle earth!!

  • middle earth was originally flat..... see the silmarillion :)

  • Carl Sagan was an amazing man.

  • Outstanding. I don't know how many times I've listened to people spout nonsense on this subject. "Columbus proved the earth was round" is a common one. When you tell them that the circumference of the earth was calculated over 2000 years ago they look at you like you're crazy. Its a face palm moment.

  • A Muslim chap was feverishly listing off the contributions to science that Islam has provided for humanity over the years, before any other civilization/nation/etc..

I am almost too embarassed that a fellow human would say this but he said that it was Islam which revealed the notion of a round Earth ;)

*Please spay or neuter your human pets*

  • That doesn't prove anything other than something existed in parallel with certain information in the Qur'an, not that one necessarily derived from the other or vice versa. This is a Fallacy Known as Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc (it came after it, so this must have caused it. )

  • Correct but it also proves that the scientific notion of a round earth did not come from the qur'an like the muslim argued.
