I will be trying this recipe because i just love love love bisquick you can do so much with it. Any chicken and dumpling recipes? Oh hehe, and thank you for posting.
I want to thank you for your great videos. I've been canning fruits and vegetables but meat made me nervous because I thought it would be harder to do. You make it simple. As I type this, I just came back from checking my broth, which I started after watching your video on soups. (It's 5:40 in the morning so you can guess how much your video impacted me.) I also wrote down your recipe on the "bisquick type" mix which I will be preparing after I watch your video on the biscuits. Thanks again.
@ceh333 Lard is found in the baking aisle near Crisco or other generic "vegetable shortenings" you will usually find one choice of "Lard" alongside them on the shelf. If your supermarket has a Latin section it can usually be located there as well.
I love your cooking videos and watch them when I make them. when we tried to switch our internet to dish network we went a week with no internet and I had never written down anything to refer back to. It was the worst week of eating here ever. All the good stuff we eat I could not make b/c I did not a recipe to refer to. I am now printing it all out so I can update my recipe binder. Funny thing is I did that for our oldest daughter as a gift when she went away to school. lesson learned. :)
@glitterflying So sorry for the late reply. YT doesn't always send me the comments. We go through it pretty quick here. But I would say it would last on the shelf for at least 6 months, if your using white flour and lard. Whole wheat flour will go bad in a few weeks though. You could store it longer by keeping it in the fridge, freezer or vac sealing it.
Have you ever made ready soup mixes? I have found those to be very helpful in a pinch and they make wonderful gifts! I came across an old shoe box full of old papers. I was gonna toss them out but giving them a quick glance I joyfully discovered they were my Great-Grandmothers soup recipes along with other goodies! I love your videos!
Just premixed many dry ingredients for different recipes over the weekend. I vacuum seal mine in both jars and bags (with oxygen absorbers). I highly prefer to do my own mixes because I am then fully aware of what my family and I are eating. Thanks for putting this up.
@tootnbarb I've never had a problem with it. :-) Lard and Shortening are stored unrefrigerated in the stores here. If I made it with butter, I'd keep it in the fridge though.
@dapuma71 Actually if you research real traditional foods, you'll find lard is much healthier then refined veggie oils. the Weston A Price Foundation has a lot of good info as a place to start. :-)
@HomesteadAcres ditto on that. A long time ago, we stopped using lard because everyone said it was unhealthy. We sacrificed the quality of our pies, etc, to go to Crisco and it looks now like all we did was make things more unhealthy for us. Old is new again. Can't see the lard replace the shortening on the store shelves fast enough now. Great video - enjoy the pace that you go through your videos, and through the gardening videos. Just the right pace and detail level.
@HomesteadAcres So many "sheeples" think fat is bad period. Fat is brain food. :-) Seriously... l
"The membranes of neurons – the specialized brain cells that communicate with each other – are composed of a thin double-layer of fatty acid molecules. Fatty acids are what dietary fats are composed of. "
excellent thank you ! big money saver and what if I can't get to the store?(because it is looted and empty) If you have more like this it would be great. thanks
Very cool! I do the same thing with whole wheat. I throw in the flour, baking powder, powdered milk, powdered eggs. Then when it's pancake time I add water and olive oil. I think I'll try your shortening idea next time. That would make it super simple and perfect for camping. Thanks for the idea.
I recently started making my own mixes, too. I vacuum seal them in family serving sizes in glass canning jars. I got most of the recipes from "Make-A-Mix" cookbooks from the library. I also print out labels with instructions on completing the mix. For the Bisquick mix, I like to use powdered buttermilk instead of regular powdered milk. Gives more flavor.
Ohh this will come in handy because my husband and kids loooveee pancakes...I am not crazy about them... :-(...I would rather have a piece of fruit.....Yum..hahha
When you used the powdered skim milk, does it have to be powderd or can i just use regular milk? By the way, awsome video.

@ceh333 Were you able to find the lard? It's normally in the baking isles up here. If not you could use butter, but store it in the fridge.
