I was 9 years old when I attended the dedication of Glad Tidings Temple, Vancouver, BC when Doris Akers directed the Choir and I have never been the same since~!
Doug Moody was the music director I grew up with and he impacted an entire generation. I took piano lessons from his brother Dave. He went home to be with the Lord last December. He will be missed, but his legacy is still played and sung everywhere.
@crd411 I have a feeling that Doug Moody accompanied Doris on the Hammond Organ at our church, Glad Tidings Temple--this album was produced for the express purpose of benefiting our church's missions program
Doris was an awesome-ly anointed singer. She worked with a command few artists ever have. I knew her and treasure her memory...."Aunt Doe" ..Min. Gene Viale James Cleveland Singer 64/65
When you hear such a clear and precise voice and such a wonderful gift it blows your mind. This is a wonderful that could have crossed over like to many other but her deciation was truly to the lord. What blessing to be able to hear such a wonderful gift to the body of Christ. Amen
It must be so wonderful for you to have all those precious memories--and that's something no one can ever take from you:-) Thank you for all your delightful comments:-)
Doris wrote this ong while directing the Sky Pilot Choir. It was first performed by the choir and one of the Sutton Sisters doing the lead. Funny thing, she had asked PAstor Aubrey Lee to shout and get alll excited during the song, but he said no. Doris was upset, but after he heard the song he really cut up!! Just one of those memories I have from attending the church in the 60's. I will never forget those days, Doris and the choir. I still enjoy the music, it's is such a blessing.
@promo6p Reading your comments posted 8 months ago brought back such wonderful memories of when I sang with the Sky Pilot Choir. I "re-visit" doris' music often. So much water under the bridge since then. I'm an old man (73) living in Palm Springs now. I was one who would hear absend/late singers' excuses in a small room off the lobby.
That must have been awesome being a part of this choir under Doris. Do you know whatever happened to Shirley Mays and her two sisters? I have the only recording they made when Shirley directed the choir and Danny Raculia was the Pastor. I am in the process of transfering all my lp's to cd's so my kids can enjoy this priceless music. God bless!!
Well, it was Doris and the music of that church that kept me there. To me, it's always the music. I was gone from the Sky Pilot Church prior to Aubrey Lee's death and Doris Akers' departure. Not aware of any history. I've carried and always will - a soft spot in my heart for Doris. Her music speaks to me often.
Shirley Mays died of a heart attack back in the late l960's I happen to sing in the Sky Pilot Chior for many years. With Doris Akers "Aunt Doe" . I don't know what happened to Darlene Sutton and her sister after Aubry Lee Died. God Bless You Charleen
@ErickaHanger Hello, My name is Don, and my family attended Buena Park Community Church from 1972 to late '75. Joseph was Pastor Raculia's first name. He passed away Dec. 26, 2006. I found his Obit. in the OC Register. Shirley was a wonderful, talented person. She passed away during the time we attended in the '70's, not the late '60's as was noted elsewhere. It was very sad. I will tell you of it if you wish.
@CannTankerous P.S. My family has several copies of the last two Sky Pilot Choir albums with Shirley Mays in vinyl, and disc. Someone was asking about them in another post.
@CannTankerous Oops, I forgot the last album was after Shirley Mays had passed. They changed the name to "The Day Of Rejoicing Choir". Pastor Raculia's daughter, Joann had taken over the choir, and her husband, Jerry played keyboards. My sister and both parents were in the choir, as well as my brother-in-laws and their parent's. Shirley was my sister Debbie's mother-in-laws (Betty Croley) niece. It was never the same after Shirley left us though.
I also sang with the Sky Pilot Choir and loved Aunt Doe very myuch.. She wrote the song Sweet Holy Spirit when we were all praying in the little room and we could not go in and sing because she felt we were not ready. Finally she said Babies I think you are ready now. We loved her and I have many memories even with Billy Preston and
Danny Marona, Ethel Waters, Ertha Kitt. Those memories will never leave me and her songs are always with me. Charleen
@gospelthang I was fortunate enough to attend the dedication service of Glad Tidings Temple, Vancouver, BC Canada, in 1962, when I was first introduced to this supremely blessed-by-God musician for His Glory--her music rings in my ears and in my heart...always~! see you over Jordan, Doris~! I cannot wait to meet you~!
Karma342...sorry for what must have felt abandonment to you--have had computer issues which have been solved--I would LOVE to hear from you, Linda !
