What a cool version! Really raw and yet charming. Glad we have this track and the Blondie cover. There's a version I produced for an obscure band a few years ago on my website if you want to check it out.
@TheLostcarlos Trashed Pleaseeeeee! , it was a failed song that never did anything. She recognized its potential and contacted them about re-cutting it. they were rapped for her to do it and they made some money from it. I like both versions.
Shades of the ventures. Just Less adventureous. Too fast and caffenated. Slow it down, add Some soul and you have a good song. This song was written in less than one hour i bet.
@tmsibusinessphones Shades of another lackluster critique. Poor punctuation, a lack of sentence structure, and an off-kilter reference contribute to this poor analysis. @0:59: Ladies, don't you just hate it when you're busy running errands and have your arms full and your skirt gets caught in a phone booth door and, comically, your underwear just falls down around your ankles, out of the blue? I'd hate it if that happened to me!
The Nerves version, this recording in particular, is better. I like Blondie and always loved their version, A LOT. Then I recently discovered this version. Man, The Nerves were doing something weird, because this original version is, for lack of a better word, brilliant. I'm surprised to hear something this good. Wow. I love the small amount of instruments, it sounds so, damn. I'm glad I found this.
the people saying that blondie did this song better are insane. just as silly as the people who think aerosmith's version of come together is better than the beatles. suckers for production. blondie completely lost the vibe of this song and turned it into some kind of weird hipster shit.
@fucktheneck I like Blondie's version, but this original version, which I just discovered, blows Blondie's right out of the water. These guys sound way good. Man, I dig this into the ground. So exciting to get turned on to a song like this, usually when I hear the cover tune 1st, it remains prefered. Not this time. The Nerves are great, there's something magnificent about them, just can't put my finger on it. That's a good sign.
@Brandonedge - they wrote it, so assuming they maintained the rights to the song, it was a big hit for them. I don't think it ever would have been so big if not for Blondie; though the song is undeniably contagious. I think Blondie does a good job, plus she's just effing hot!
@sleazyearlray I had my arm around her once for a photo back in '77 on their first UK tour supporting Television. Chris took the photo. Hot indeed. I recount this to my wife but she just suppresses a smirk.
@minutegongcoughs You fuckin lucky bastard! Sorry, but im just SOOoooooo fuckin Jealous and envious of you! She's the only person besides Elvis, man or woman that ive REALLY even wanted to meet and still do!!! What did you think of DH when you saw her in person? Sorry for asking but " IY'S GOTZ TA KNOW!" P.s tell your wife only about @ billion or so guys world wide envy you and im one of them Ha! Ha! But seriously im not joking.
@boltonox Well we were aged between 18 & 19 and it was just lucky as we were returning from the Hammersmith Odeon on foot, taking the backstreets up to Paddington area and lo and behold they were staying in the Bayswater/Porchester area. It was a warm night and if I remember (well I,m not gonna forget this the windows were open and we saw Debbie & Chris in the bar area.
@minutegongcoughs We didn't pester them too much but this was as good as getting a stare from John Lydon in the upstair bar at the Roxy a few months earlier. Him being two years older is like that playground hierarchy. You can't catch up so you are a bit in awe. As for Debbie and Chris we all loved the first Blondie LP which was on import. The infamous "Jesus" with his integral tambourine was at the gig. It's just a stroke of luck or Kismet or a planned accident but you just never forget.
@minutegongcoughs Thanks for the reply. She's playing out hear in Australia next month so i hope to go see her then. If i get the chance im gonna go for it because i want to meet her. Thats a Good memory to have mate!
This one is good, but Blondie's version has more energy and the song just flows better (the guitar solo they added is a nice touch too).
But since The Nerves actually wrote the song, I'll have to listen to more of their music because Hanging On The Telephone is a well put together tune.
@neheah No way! The Nerves version is jaw-dropping(I couldn't think of anything better to say, LAME!) Blondie is great, totally. I love the bare bones sound of the Nerves, and what a voice. Cheers!
@jeffdeanable I can't agree. I've been a Blondie fan for a long time, but I have to agree the Nerves really crossed a barrier originally. But I can't get into that much. But I do thank the Nerves for writing the song, part of history.
i wish there were NO covers of this song. this should've been a big hit for them and they should've been a big band and not broken up and all that and blahblah
I like this version but for 1976 it sounds a tad like a 60's oldies song not mid 70's new wave. Blondie modernized it and added more production to it and I like Blondie's version more but this original version is good too. This is one of the rare times that I like the original less.
@doetim Original on Bomp and what a label it was. This was an import in the UK in 1976. Blondie had more quality studio time. That's all relative in the music industry.
@Donjjo I guess it could go either way. I listened to both so many times to figure out the difference in the vocals and I have to say that Debbie Harry's voice has more punch and sounds more frantic to me so I think there's more emotions in her delivery plus her vocals has more variety, she does some growling and sneering in her voice, voice volume goes soft and then she takes it up, this version he keeps it at one level with the same sound the entire song.
Hoosier - Its (acid reign's) a cliched, done by numbers cover that would have been given better treatment by me first and the gimmes if thats the sound youre after.
Like i said though, its all individual. Its a song that wasnt meant to be given a heavy treatment. The progressions and melodies demad too much attention.
For the record, the Nerves original STILL lays waste to the Blondie version, especially on vinyl.
A dj in Stockholm played the original 45 (yes) about a week ago in the bar SNOTTY'S, and I had forgotten how incredibly good it was. The ORIGINAL version of this song. The b-side is even better. Just listen... why spending endless time on commenting on everything on here. Isn't it obvious from the start? Which song is A, a Good Song Is Still A Good Song. Gawd almight
Had no idea Blondie's was a cover until a few minutes ago when it was linked by a friend on Facebook. Usually, the original is always best. Not in this case tho.
@jeffdeanable What do you mean Used to? Debbie Still sings Great! Any Way, For Me Hanging is My Favorite Blondie Song while I do Still Enjoy The Nerves Version. hey, Both are Great! LOVE DEBORAH HARRY AND BLONDIE!!!!!!!
@jamierourketen I just really love the way there seem to be minimal tracks, but it is so well balanced. Like and engine. The bass guitar is simple, yet very, very good-real good. The guitar, unique, drums also unique. I just think it's an outstanding piece of work. I don't care, not yet, anyway, for the other songs on the record, but sometimes stuff will grow on you. Like moss. lol I'm kind of surprised that I just discovered this. I would think it would be talked about more, or whatever. Anyway
Really awesome song , too bad it is so short. I love the Blondie version also, and some cover bands can perform it pretty decent too. I recorded both versions and use them as my phone ringtones !
The Nerves were SUCH a great band. Years ahead of their time! The EP that Hangin On the Telephone came from was a real classic, featuring When You Find Out and other classics. Some people thought Blondie wrote this song, and sure, they did a great cover, but Jack Lees The Nerves were real new wave innovators of the early 70s. Listen to this track and the heart and soul in Jacks vocals.
Jack Lee is an excellent song writer. He also wrote "Will Anything Happen?" for Blondie after The Nerves had broken up. I don't get into the whole "which version is better" routine with covers. (Imagine trying that for "Hey Joe", covered by Hendrix and every band in the known universe). Blondie did a good version of it and turned it into a hit, and it just presents better with Debbie singing it. If Blondie didn't cover it would we ever have heard of it?
wow this is amazing.. usualy im schooling people on music.. but wow i didnt know blondie werent the originols to do this song.. its funny im 20 and i only like music ahead of my time.. my mom being an ex glam rocker and my mom being an old punk/goth girl.. u know thats one odd classification i fall into haha.. but i grew up on all kinds of mixed genres.... as i got older though i started looking into music for myself though..
incredible that as they split two of the members formed two underrated bands: Paul Collins'The Beat and Peter Case's The Plimsouls and Jack Lee disaooeared ...
I say, bsznm. Your head must swell up and get awfully big when you go on YT and you can't help but topple over and end up on the floor. Then I suppose when you are eventually able to leave the room your head cannot get through the door. How do you cope with this? It must seem like a locked room mystery.
Alright Mom! I'll be there in a minute! Gawd! I'm writing a YouTube comment.... I thought when I moved down here to the basement I'd get some privacy! Gawd!
No one should be put down for liking this original version more or Blondie's version. There's no right or wrong, it's art and purely subjective and every reason everyone gives for liking this version more or less is correct in its own right.
Jack Lee of the Nerves who wrote this must be happy as hell about the Blondie cover -- undoubtedly the is still receiving royalty checks off that one cover version that are far bigger than they get for anything they played themselves. Debbie Harry also covered another Lee tune on Parallel Lines.
Since Blondie released this song (I still have my vinyl copy) it has been my all time favorite Blondie tune. I had no idea that it was not a Blondie original, I did'nt check the credits 'till now. I don't know if the Nerves version sounds better by virtue of being either the freasher or the original version, but to me it does sound better.
Blondie's version is great. However, The Nerves created this masterpiece from scratch. The vocal melodies, the instrumental hooks, the lyrics -- it's all their work, not Blondie's. All the credit should therefore go to The Nerves, and Blondie should be commended for bringing to the world's attention (and in an attractive fashion at that) a song that non-scenesters might not have gotten wind of otherwise.
At least Jack Lee made money out of Blondie having success with it. Sounds like a demo version that just needed a good production behind it and a bit of luck to make it a hit....then along came Blondie!
At least Debbie asked Jack's permission to re-record the song.
Blondie didn't even change the beginning. Blondie did simply lift it. Shame the Nerves don't get the credit they deserve but that's how blondes & boobs sell, if blokes would just buy music with their brains instead of hteir balls!
You need to listen to this some more. This is so much more intense, direct and immediate than Blondie's. The dynamics are perfect. This may be the quintessential power pop recording.
It's great to finally hear this--thanks for posting. I always wondered what it sounded like. Debbie said it was so well presented they just had to do it. As comparisons go, and with consideration given to the fact that you usually like things best the first way you heard them, I still rule in favor of Blondie's version--the arrangement is more exciting and Debbie's vocals kick ass!
Yeah, part of what makes it good. Raw, a bit sloppy, intense. What rock should be. Love the Blondie version too, but much prefer this one. Yes Debbie's vocals were better in a technical sense, but Jack just sounds more genuine singing it.
I'm not too familiar with Blondie's version of this but I love them so and this is my first time hearing this and of this group. I really do like this though. Wouldn't Joe have something like this too? Or was everyone doing the same sentiment about lost loves, etc. just different variations?
love this song! so hard to listen to it though with the skips and little lags. was this a vinyl rip you made, cd rip, mp3 you found, etc?

No one should be put down for liking this original version more or Blondie's version. There's no right or wrong, it's art and purely subjective and every reason everyone gives for liking this version more or less is correct in its own right.
guyinsf 2 years ago 3
Jack Lee of the Nerves who wrote this must be happy as hell about the Blondie cover -- undoubtedly the is still receiving royalty checks off that one cover version that are far bigger than they get for anything they played themselves. Debbie Harry also covered another Lee tune on Parallel Lines.

bomagosh ~
that would be "will anything happen".
didn't know that 'till very recently, despite remembering 'parallel lines' from the very beginning.

Very cool to hear the original! I love the version Def Leppard does of this song. Check it out.

Also "Will Anything Happen ?" from the same Blondie LP is a Jack Lee composition.

Since Blondie released this song (I still have my vinyl copy) it has been my all time favorite Blondie tune. I had no idea that it was not a Blondie original, I did'nt check the credits 'till now. I don't know if the Nerves version sounds better by virtue of being either the freasher or the original version, but to me it does sound better.
industrial458 2 years ago 3
Blondie's version is great. However, The Nerves created this masterpiece from scratch. The vocal melodies, the instrumental hooks, the lyrics -- it's all their work, not Blondie's. All the credit should therefore go to The Nerves, and Blondie should be commended for bringing to the world's attention (and in an attractive fashion at that) a song that non-scenesters might not have gotten wind of otherwise.

What's all this production crap? This is pure rock and roll, just crank the mother and jam!
pepsipoptarts 2 years ago
At least Jack Lee made money out of Blondie having success with it. Sounds like a demo version that just needed a good production behind it and a bit of luck to make it a hit....then along came Blondie!
At least Debbie asked Jack's permission to re-record the song.

i much prefer blondies version. its way more exciting.

yup i agree but cnt go wrong with the classics neither lol

Blondie didn't even change the beginning. Blondie did simply lift it. Shame the Nerves don't get the credit they deserve but that's how blondes & boobs sell, if blokes would just buy music with their brains instead of hteir balls!
ednuttah 2 years ago 2
You need to listen to this some more. This is so much more intense, direct and immediate than Blondie's. The dynamics are perfect. This may be the quintessential power pop recording.
pepsipoptarts 2 years ago 8
It's great to finally hear this--thanks for posting. I always wondered what it sounded like. Debbie said it was so well presented they just had to do it. As comparisons go, and with consideration given to the fact that you usually like things best the first way you heard them, I still rule in favor of Blondie's version--the arrangement is more exciting and Debbie's vocals kick ass!

yeah i like it too but i stilol love my blondie version sorry ....
johnnyparis1981 2 years ago 2
this is a good song but the recording sounds like a demo they did in a garage or something
shamanofsexy90 2 years ago 2
Yeah, part of what makes it good. Raw, a bit sloppy, intense. What rock should be. Love the Blondie version too, but much prefer this one. Yes Debbie's vocals were better in a technical sense, but Jack just sounds more genuine singing it.
SouthPhillyHooligan 2 years ago
I'm not too familiar with Blondie's version of this but I love them so and this is my first time hearing this and of this group. I really do like this though. Wouldn't Joe have something like this too? Or was everyone doing the same sentiment about lost loves, etc. just different variations?

Nice...but a rare case when the cover is better?

no way dude this version is so much better
mikey1771 2 years ago 2
i really can't understand people thinking the blonde cover is better then this ... maybe i can't just relate to the jack lee vocals better ...
also you can barely hear the guitar in the blondie version and the guitar is fanstastic in this song.

The guitar in this version sounds sloppy.
