Well, you can hold circle to slide down rapidly, which staggers and does minor damage to enemies in your path. You can also hit r1 to punch an enemy above you (note that most enemies that can climb can do that too). Also, don't worry, I'm sure your fondness of snakes will dissipate later in the game.
