  • geez the those were the good times even the 50s as well

  • All the better for being imperfect..nowadays most people dont get it. Clinical and pitch perfect is not always what it is all about.

The vibes, the feel ..but it is impossible to explain but for me listening to this film was great, never mind the discordant, the messing up..just the snatch of when the harmony blends, this is (for me)magic.

Reminds me of the festivals in the sixties...A'hh..anyone remember Watchfield? Passed out and woke up with slug and snail trails all over me .

  • fuck i love these guys their songs are so great i pretty much know every word to all of their songs

  • Terrible video/sound-see Robin giving soundman dirty looks? Heron's Psyche/folk String Band mystical, magical, whimsical at times, and well, incredible. Here, the band-clearly frustrated, blustery acoustic sound-check and yes, probably enjoying powerful psychedelics; it was in the water! 21st century youth, weaned on manufactured rap/pop, can't possibly fathom 60's peripheral music/art/Woodstock. Psychedelics not banned by the Fed until 1970. Genuinely sorry you missed it, kids!

  • They're good looking and all but their pitch problems mixed with their positively inane lyrics make me want to gouge out my eyeballs. Is this ok with everyone?

  • @minwav You don't need anyone's permission, but why don't you rest content with your figurative blindness?

  • search nicolas and the iceni rowan. they write beautiful folk music which has echoes of the string band and the early folk revival of the sixties.

  • Is she missing some teeths?

  • this is raw hippie history footage ... prescious little of it exists ...everything today is so slick and polished and digitally perfect with little courage to do anything different ... if you try to be creative, not everything you do is going to work ...1969 was the end of an incredible distinct creative decade .... ..iii would trade the times we are in for the sixties without hesitation ... give me a damm time machine and iii would go back there and never come back here ..

  • If anyone doubts the harmful effects of Licorice Allsort abuse, they need look no further than this girl, teeth fallen out with too much sugar and brain addled with too many E numbers.......be smart, stay off the Allsorts.

  • HUZZAH!

  • WOW....HIPPIEshit....bloaph....kick thar chick, all offff the stage!!!!!

  • La chimoltrufia sings

  • My pal Phil "Phibber" Munchausen says the girls name was Licorice Allsort...she was off her face on Licorice sweets.

  • Beautiful song. As Allen Ginsberg said "they were higher beings". Such a treat to see Licorice singing. I really hope they uncover some lost footage of them performing live. They played on so many tv show that something new has to show up.

  • wow... such a special performance of that song. thanks

  • Jackasses! the first thing out of a square's mouth is 'she's stoned' as if they could get up in front of 200,000 people and squeak out one note themselves.. or Jimi play the guitar like he did 'stoned' what losers/Squares also prided themselves on calling the Beatles 'The Bathless Boys' (as if there was something 'dirty' t about them therefore easy dismiss) well they lost that contest didn't they. Don't get fooled again....we were lucky Woodstock wasn't bombed...mk no mstke/it wld be today...

  • i fell in love.

  • all true, indeed, but if you were there in the 60s and met them and saw them and heard them - ah, quite a different matter!

  • I'm sorry I love the guitar but the girl sings horrible..... :P

  • Beutifull people with out ego problems like nowdays.

  • The "chick" is Liquorice". The "stringband" not to be confused with a canadian band; was a hippy family commune from Edinburgh. The picture on the cover of "A hangman's beautiful daughter", is the family. ...... "amoebas are very small"! Thanks Liquorice for some great music. Your backing vocals gave great depth to it! Culminating with, Little Dan and the Big Huge. ...... Cheers!

  • @hirundine ..... duh! "Wee Tam and the Big Huge". .... Time for another Prozac!

  • All the "wow she's stoned" comments amuse me. It was Woodstock, if you weren't wasted, you weren't in the right field lol

  • That chick is blown out of her mind lol

  • As the years go by, the antics and posturings of these attention-seeking and smug little twits just gets more and more embarrasing.

  • TEETH. MISSING. COULDN'T FOCUS ON ANYTHING ELSE

  • Teeth!!! Teeth!!! Teeth!!! Thats all im reading here, are you people that post comment like this listening to the music or considering carears in dentistry!!!

  • What fucking care if she had or had no teeth? She was cute.

  • Licky lives.

  • I suppose you had to be there . . . .

  • she lost her tooth

  • How did she lose that front tooth? They were all so flower power.

I read that they were going to go electric but when it rained they got scared.

  • I wonder would they have been on better form if they'd played on the Friday. Is that the footage there is of their Woodstock set? Would you mind if I leave a link for my own ISB song/video - 'Back In The 1960s' - please? :)

  • This is horrid.

The chic trying to sing makes me ill.

What a screach owl she is.

  • This is a nice snapshot of a moment which will sadly never be repeated. Admittedly the recording is a little dodgy but it's all the more charming because of it.

    And Licorice looks lovely.

  • @NewWaver80014 licorice always looked lovely

  • @Fugly58 Good point!

  • Sometimes i feel bad that i'm grouped in with this generation and it's awful music, when i listen to music like this.

The horrors of having good music taste at 17.

  • This band and this song is underrated, this video does no judgement for the band.

  • This is truly awful. Me and my buddies jamming sound better... and we don't even know 3 chords between us.

  • I*'m sure they are much better than this performance as well!

  • That girl is Christina 'Licorice' McKechnie (born 2 October 1945 in Edinburgh, Scotland) and as far as I can see from message boards and such has disappeared and is no where to be found

  • @turnersage Did she start dissapearing with the frontal teeth?

  • wow, quite a special moment indeed !

captivating video, thanks for sharing it

  • Right! Art and individuality used to be more important... and musicians were open enough to inspire each other. Nowadays, people would rather have the attention and fame without any effort and substance. It's sad, but, we let it happen.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

  • According to Wikipedia, ISB was supposed to play the Friday set that was mainly accoustic and folk acts (Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, etc), but did not want to play in the rain. Instead they played Saturday, following Canned Heat.

  • @RayNDeere I've just finished a book called white bicycles by joe boyd who managed them during the 60s, he mentions this in the book, ISB are the last thing you want to hear after the mighty heat

  • @oldfilikin Anybody that got ahold of the brown acid probably was freaking, going from "The Bear" to the ISB. Would put me on the wagon, that for sure.

  • Wow..this is rare footage..not even shown in the movie I believe. All this great stuff from an era in which I was present throughout. If anyone like's the ISB..then also have a listen to Principal Edwards Magic Theatre

  • wow, didn't even know TISB was at Woodstock...

  • That woman is missing a tooth. She can sing well though.

  • also a lot of crap is made in those days!

  • We are what we are man, beautiful. It disgusts me that people would think that our physical appearance matters. We must accept people for themselves, that what this great festival was all about.

  • @StealthKiller123 i wish i was alive back then :(

  • God help us! Check out Licorice's cakehole! You'd think Joe Boyd could have sprung for a fake tooth for her. Just think....whilst in the dentist's chair, the world would have been spared from her singing, at least for 45 minutes...right?

  • they were not "out of their trolly" the were simply right

  • @jeffas100 True

  • No wonder why they weren't in the movie.

  • Why isn't rose simpson in this video ?

  • @vonroon23 Rose is the grinning lady at the very end. She appears a little more in their other Woodstock video, The Letter.

  • they really were out of their trolly

  • lol the drugs did a good job on her! she look beautiful with out teeth hahahahahahahaha

  • dam son

  • Thanks for posting this. I've always heard these guys mentioned but never heard them til now.

  • 10,000 stars

  • Licorice can hit some really high notes! It's a cool pop-structured song. of course is art!

  • @toddma1221

    Ethereally high notes.

You're right about the pop structure- though everything the band does is delightfully off-kilter.

This is a band that's really timeless. I mean, their songs have such a warmth as well as whimsy.

  • The girl with no teeth is Christina "Licorice" McKechnie.

  • haha i think she"s realy gone

and i think some of her teeths too

  • yuck

  • im not sure americans got the isb

  • @ramron333 Wha? Being a geezer I can tell you that we "got" them at the time. Joe Sixpack -- no. But the hip and the Woodstocky did. I assure you, that even back in those "dark ages" there were many who were fans.

  • hehe that girl is really stoned

  • hahahahahaha

  • @readytoliveagain how couldnt she? it was 69!

  • This song should have been added onto the new 6 cd box set too, instead you get a whole lot of songs you already have, it's not the worst Woodstock song iv'e heard.

  • Oh My God. She is out of her mind. its unbelievable how gone she is.

  • Qué espantoso !! Totalmente desafinado. Debe ser porque al piano le faltaban las teclas del medio.

  • Because in the '60's ART was more important then the way you looked . How far we have dropped.

  • @professorLorca sorry, would you call this nice folk song ART!?

  • now that's a tough question. put a gun to my head and i would say yes, i reckon music is either art or entertainment, but where i'd draw the line i have no idea. now i think about it i'll say this isn't art, but honestly i don't have a clue

  • @professorLorca Checkout Espers they are a progressive/folk/psychedelic group, and they came out in 2002, and they are very artistic with their music.

  • @professorLorca Is that right. And was ART also more important than not sucking, in the 60s?

  • Why does she have teeth missing?

  • Trends being what they are. The flower power thing went on much longer in the U.K. than here. By '69 it was days of rage. England had no war dividing the nation. By '69 Americans had had their fill of childlike hippieness. Compare ISB with CSN here. Still Robin, Mike & Licorice were real treasures. God Keep Them

  • This clip shows them falling appart a bit. Where's the footage of the rest of that set? Surely it wasn't all bad. This is slightly cringeworthy, I know, but I still think Likky's voice is amazing. Also I think she looks beautiful despite her toothless, tripped-out state, and I applaud her anti glam, ani fake, hair as god intended statement,

  • The Incredible String Band were, sort of, 'incredible'. They were breaking new ground with guitar riffs, harmonies and melodies, from a 'folk music' base.

They were as experimental as The Pink Floyd were at that time. The floyd were coming from a 'jazz and blues' base. Take a look at floyd pre 69 they were just as 'incredible' then.

  • I really like this band, but watching this made me feel uncomfortable. Then when that toothless woman hit that screeching high note, I shit myself a little bit.

  • This was almost painful to watch, considering how they sound on albums.. I am of the woodstock generation, and love their music today.

  • Well, that as embarrassing wasn't it. Never, never, never get ripped and try to sing out of your range. The feedback was slightly more in tune that that poor girl.

  • And what should we call you?

  • Have you even listened to their album The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter?

  • I have.

An album out of place and out of time!

These guys were not the next generation after the Beatles, where all things were now possible.

They were the same age,and had taken a different and equally ground breaking and thrilling direction.

ISB were true innovators, and there music still stands up ( and is not hippy by numbers!!) over 40 years later.

Otherwise we wouldn't be here watching talking about it now, would we?.

  • Yes, one of my favorite albums of all time!

  • Comment removed

  • may the pure light within you guide your way on

  • Wow, where were her teeth?

Saw them at WS but dont remember them being THIS bad....

    jofo

  • This song, This Moment, is quite charming. If you can't smile through it, then go fuck yourself.

  • Check out....

  • Dearly beloved...forgive them for they dont know what they say. The Incredible String Band were the most utterly unique pioneers of a most eclectic form of psychedelia, incorporating styles beyond anyones wildest dreams (except Davey Graham perhaps), performed with the most astonishing virtuosity, and songwriters and lyricist of the most visionary kind. Huge influence on early Zeppelin and admired by Syd Barrett, Beatles, Stones etc...Not their finest hour, true, but not in their heyday...

  • You are slightly overselling it.

Apart from your preacher like zeal, you are entirely correct.

To a certain modern ear, they sound like Proto Hippies.

To others,we realise they were successfully expeimenting with world music, and indeed music made thousands of years before they were born.

Not sure about the Stones reference

Jagger was asked about them a few years ago,and couldn't remember a thing about them. And you omittited Billy Connolly. He knew and still loves them!.

  • Cheers, yup i guess this clip could be seen as flower power at its worst but post Wee Tam their decline was sharp imho. Forgive the preacher like zeal, as you say, but the ISB had that most extraordinary ability to take you off to another world...i feel like i lived in the setting of The Waltz of the New Moon for many years! In the BBC documentary Marianne Faithful recalled spending many happy times with Mick listening to the ISB.

  • I never saw that,I'm sure it's true,and I'm sure Mick has "forgotten"!

  • The BBC doc is on here in 3 parts, check it out, nice to see the ISB getting some recognition at last...if you like the ISB youd definitely like the US group Kaleidoscope, kinda similar but more a mix of garage and arabic stuff...odd but great! search for "kaleidoscope lie to me" for some ultra rare footage!

  • I would add that the Beatles were admirers as well. Just about everyone in the musical scene during that period loved them and many of the greats were infuenced by them in one fashion or another.

Robert Plant is still a huge fan.

  • think i included the Beatles :) Yep that Tolkien-esque world that inspired Plants lyrics was definitely inspired by the ISB and particularly Robin Williamson. There was some problem with the schedule at Woodstock, and i can imagine the ISB live prefered small, intimate venues.Anyway im sure they werent the worst at WS, ppl keep banging on about the Grateful Dead but there must be a reason why their set hasnt seen the light of day, not even in the 4 hr epic i watched last weekend!

  • Yes, I see now that you did. Interesting that Joe Boyd was Syd Barrett's producer as well, at least for Pink Floyd's breakthough single, "Arnold Layne". You can certainly see the infuence on Barrett's first album with Pink Floyd.

Regarding Woodstock, they wer supposed to go the first evening along with Ravi Shanker, Joan Baez and other folk artists. That Friday night was truely magical and they would have had a much more receptive audience and performed better.

  • a ha, thanks for the info. In the Barrett book Lost in the Woods theres a list of albums Syd was listening to, tho how the writer could substantiate the list is questionable...

  • Who were they? Somebody's relatives? No wonder this was left out of the movie.

  • here is another band jimmy page is shittin himself over, wonder how this guy is working that chord progession!! this i bet inspired jimmy page to write bron-y-aur-stomp huh!!! jimmy could never figure this song out!!! and whats with the chick and her front teeth missing? how about losing some of that monster pubic bush instead baby!!! this is really bad!!!

  • my god in heaven the star land vocal band is better than this crap!!!! oh man altamont rocked!!!! i loved grace saying we need people like the angles!!! yes they are needed like a scorpion in my shoe, fuck the angles but that guy did pull a gun!!! i know when i go to a concert the first thing on my mind is to pack my loaded gun!!!

  • That is yoko after John knocked out her teeth!

  • what a bizarre howling,,, Oh no!

  • You mean Altamont Speedway. The Monterey Po p Festival was held in 1967. I don't know that the Rolling Stones were there

  • Altamont was in December of 1969. Monterey was in June of 1967

  • when you say monterey pop festival you mean that was held in California?

  • uh, yes - Monterey speedway CA, where one of the Hells Angels stabbed a kid to death during the Stones set - see the movie.

  • I'm not someone who goes around saying how terrible this and that videos are..not at all.. but after watching this one I have to say... this is awful. And YOU know this :) Looking forward to listen more of their music, I'm sure they couldn't be so bad like that all the time.

  • I really like the Incredible String Band.

  • this was not the best song at woodstock, but it was a happening, actually this was the worst song.

  • Robin Williams - the brother of Roy - who wrote the new Scottish National Anthem (check out The Corries) was a musical gem!

  • they are very talented, too bad they had electrical problem

  • well all i have to say is that anybody who does not like this can go fuck themself

  • They are beautiful, (although they are obviously having technical problems at this nightmare gig). It's the hateful cretins online that are ugly.

  • im sure some of the neanderthals slamming the band would have done much better

  • This first day of woodstock was mostly paying customers. To bad they had to put up with this. Ouch!

  • ISB watching this now--if they can bear to--is probably like you or me looking at that one really, really bad driver's license photo we once had taken.

  • I.S.B could never work in a stadium rock situation, they worked very well in smaller venues,I remember seeing them in Oxford about ayear after this and thy where brilliant

  • The girl voice is so topy

  • this is why some bands were left out of the movie this was like listening to a cat being stepped on

  • it's true that this is a crap perfortmance of "this moment" - it's not perfect on the record - but there were enormous problems at woodstock - still, liquorice looks wonderful - martin

  • i love ISB but this is the type of show they give you would only dig if you were high

  • after watching incredible string band, peer into the most beautiful kaleidoscope on youtube. Wikipedia calls this kaleidoscope "spectacular" and with good reason.

    youtube ** Blue Siberia **

  • charming and entertaining i will say.

  • ISB is a great band... but this is terrible! Jesus!

  • hahahahahahahaha

  • Ouch - I understand why these guys ened up on the editing floor ... once again ... ouch :(

  • I can dig a hairy bush.I fail to see why you would have a woman to look like a 10 y.o. down there.

Anyway a bit out of context perhaps..?

  • And now we are pleased to welcome to this week's folk club, husband and wife team Peter and Fiona.......

  • I have to disagree, It has a lot of heart.

  • why does eveyone thing this is so bad? Not like the album version, I know, but still...

  • I love ISB. But ooh dat's bad

  • The Incredibly Aweful Band. I'm surprised they weren't stoned (that is, stones hurled at them) after this performance. Or perhaps the audience themselves were so stoned, they weren't listening.

  • its pretty bush league shit but that's the whole point is it not? ITS FREE! meaning if you have something to express or say what better way. So although I pity the ears of the audience, I really don't have to. They were there for reason so unless you lived it there's really no point in commenting if you don't like it or don't care. You watched it right? Lol Eat a hot-dog Newb!

  • Actually, sir, or ma'am, it would be a lot better if hippies took over the world.

You probably don't know anything about playing music or even writing a song, Bubba Jay or Fanny Mae.

  • This is great! They should release their full performance on a deluxe DVD with EVERY OTHER filmed ISB performance available!!! NOW!!!

  • This sucked....no wonder they didn't put it into the released version of the film. Poop

  • this is how our world could be if we were hippies

  • Wow! Incredible String Band at Woodstock absolutely amazing. I wish I was there.

  • Man, people are harping on The Incredible String band. Sure, it might not be that good of a performance, but watch something else if you hate it so much.

  • hippie sissy music, pretty cool though.

  • Well jimmyboy8005, I don't know about hippos at Woodstock. Yes this performance does suck but they were better than this. Technical problems are plauging their performance obviously....however your comment is freakin' funny! LMAO! "Water logged edition of the Manhattan Yellow Pages"

  • 400,000 HIPPIES at Woodstock, and you know what, this is a VERY good band, just because you are a fucking dumbass doesn't mean its bad, go listen toy our fall out boy now and stop posting ridiculous comments on vids you don't like

in fact, why did you watch this if you hate it?

if you did it just to post some ignorant comment then you must have no life whatsoever

  • LOL

  • Or burying you at birth...

  • I'm sorry for you mein Freund but I cannae sink to your level. The message of love and negro cumshots dealt by the ISB has conferred upon me, immunity from such hate and ignorance as you display.

  • whatever....

  • They are still playing! In backwater venues though

  • Actually they were really big in the late 60's. I went to see them at the Royal Albert Hall in about 1970 and thought they were excellent. This performance does suck though - she's totally out of tune!

  • if u take LSD

ull understand everyword of this song
