  • i was soooo in love with michelle

  • was their ever a more beautiful rocker then michelle phillips?????.......I think not!

  • I love this song!!! The dancing looks kinda painful though :)

  • dig michelle and cass white "go go boots". sign of the times.

  • whats a hullabaloo?

  • The bathtub props remind me of a Cialis commercial

  • It s pretty funny watching them, they don't really know what to do with themselves. Doherty looking around and laughing is great

  • Is there anything better on YouTube than 1:49 - 1:52 ?

  • 1:18

  • That blonde dancer in the foreground is hot. Great video.

  • I'm just grateful nobody does such horrendous choreography like this anymore -- Doherty not only stares, he is LAUGHING!

  • the skinny blonde girl has an ass on her dont she?

  • @z7TravisGT500 That would be Michelle Phillips. I think she would have looked hotter if she wore a better firtting shirt. Almost fits her like if she wore a guys shirt. Awesome that these videos are still available. Thanks to Aguz221 for posting it.

  • Satanists.

  • the blonde is sexy. ;)

  • @cruzgonzalez182 ...Michelle Phillips. Married to John, then started banging Denny. When this group hit, almost every girl in my school bleached and straightened their hair.

  • The bathtubs were a visual reference to the cover art of their debut album "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears." They worked very hard to be able to replicate their complicated recorded sound live without the aid of backup singers and for the most part succeeded. Their first three albums were nothing short of brilliant but success proved a rough road for all four of them emotionally.

  • i can see lada edmund jr dancing

  • they played this in forest gump

  • good on them not caring about anything but good music.

  • how did the dancers not break their necks?

  • the world made sense up to 1:19...

  • @apv0713--what kind of asinine statement is that ?Easily triple the competition? You obviously don't understand the sixties enough to appreciate the sound. One can only hope your pay is in line with your "discerning" ear!

  • "I'd like to take a pair of scissors to those goofy bastards"...................................... I was just remembering what my dad would say back then when one of the cool singing groups was on Ed Sullivan, The Smothers Brothers, Dick Cavett, etc etc. Haha those were good times, very very good times.

  • 2:19 - 2:26 she looks fuckin retarded lol

  • The reason why this looks like an "old mm8 home movie", 'mary', is because the original color videotape of this performance was filmed in black and white from a TV monitor (that's how most videotaped and "live" TV shows were preserved back then, and seen, via delayed broadcast, on smaller NBC stations unable to carry "HULLABALOO" at its scheduled time- Mondays, 7:30pm(et)- and didn't have videotape playback units; they showed it on a 16mm projector).

  • Someone in Hollywood has to do a biopic on this group. I could see Marissa Jaret Winokur as Cass and perhaps Scarlett Johannsen as Michelle. Any suggestions for John and Denny? Nicholas Cage is too old and Jack Black's too heavy.

  • @jfab64 I would put Tim McGraw as Denny, no ideas on who could be John though.

  • The instrumental is not live; no one is claiming it is. It is the vocals over the instrumental that are live. The fact that the mics aren't plugged in is moot. There may be mics overhead that aren't seen, but regardless, the Ms&Ps had enough power not to need mics, especially in this early stage of their career when they were so revved up that their voices nearly exploded off the set. The differences between the studio vocal and this vocal are self-evident and speak for themselves.

  • Ugh, Michelle. Whore was f-cking Sharon Tate's husband--supposedly her best friend!

  • i love this I have never in my life seen som many people these days that are in the music industry need to have soul. I love the mamas and the papas

  • Not live of course. I don't think they ever went on TV singing live, that i can see anywhere on the tube.

  • The vocals are indeed live. They are singing over the studio instrumental. Many other of their TV appearances were lip-synched, as so many singers' were then. But this is live. There are many subtle differences throughout: in terms of pitch or length a note is held; in the slight splitting of Cass and Michelle's harmonies; in the entries or re-entries being off by a split second; in some syllables being given more urgency. It's to their credit that so many think it's lip-synched. But it's live.

  • @jjulian49 Course it's not live. Hullabaloo rarely was. If you want proof-physicale, no leads from the mics.

  • That's about as 'live' as John Lennon.....

  • Mama Cass rocked!

  • Michelle is so Hott. And I'm a girl.

  • @idlefonzo201

I completely agree. And stayed hot till she was 40. And I'm a guy ;)

  • Does someone know of a genuine live performance of this song somewhere on YT? I'm pretty sure this is the studio vocal (and it's certainly the studio instrumental track).

  • @Tsugaheterophylla

you're right. Most Hullaballo shows were lip synched. And most Mamas and Papas TV appearances were lip synched because of all the layers in the song.

They did do this live at Monterey and there is video of it on YouTube. But they hadn't been together in months, didn't rehearse and were tired... so not the best performance.

  • @LittleDragon2000 Be fair, though- even "not their best performance" is far better than just about anything out these days! (God, I sound old...)

    8o)

  • @goatboy420

You're absolutely right - on both counts ;)

  • @LittleDragon2000 XP

    8o)

(Sadly, though, I do sound old. Mind you, can I help it if I happen to like music that's played by actual musicians, and enjoy listening to singers that can actually sing? There aren't all that many of them left these days, are there...)

  • @goatboy420

"There aren't all that many of them left these days, are there?"

NONE that I can think of.

  • great song, but the bathtub dancers are just scary lmao

  • Wasn't Michelle Phillips a babe? I must go and watch "Valentino" now.. :-)

  • @sambda

She was great in "The Man with Bogart's Face" aka "Sam Marlowe, Private Eye"

  • How truly wonderful, Terry Hall Blair And Anouchka were so influenced....beautiful!

  • they are better in person, its insanity.... bring back these golden days

  • AAAH YES, I REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS TOO. When you didn't have to plug in your ele. guitars, or sing into the mic. And they could still get a good sound.

these days with all the technology they have to plug the guitars in, I don't get it? There's always a wise guy HUH?

  • I used to watch this show back then. My mom hated it cuz she didn't like the go-go dancers int he cages. I remember her fussing about me wathcing that show with those imorral go-go dancers lol. Those were the days when the music was good. Love Mama Cass outfit.

  • HAHAHA WHITE BOOTS! DISLIKE!

  • 1:19 If that is the acceptable way to dance in the 70's I wanna go back to that time! I have no idea how to dance at like my school dances! It's all "jerkin" and fist pumping! But I can so do what the dancers are doing!

  • @OneBroadwayDay yeah! totally agree (but its the 60's)

  • bathtub dancer at 1:25 is Goldie Hawn

  • Does amyone, besides me, recognize the bathtub dancer at 1:25?

  • @youtootube99

I thought she looked like mitzy gaynor at first...

  • LOL. when the dancers come up, doherty stops dancing and just staressss. haha

  • @blacksheep136 hahah i dont think the show told any of them they would have dancers.. or else he's trippin

  • @blacksheep136

lol, no wonder. I fucking shit myself

  • before people danced so rare

  • @abrahamserven12 jaja but it's funny :E!

  • This movie takes me back to Vietnam War.

  • I would so do Denny Doherty back then.

    His voice is amazing.

  • completely spoilt by those freakin' tub dancers

  • @MrBrooke66 I so agree. I always thought this song had like a deep meaning to it and it sounds quite creepy. I don't think the over the top, lively dancing actually reflects what this song is about.

  • Classic forever

  • geniales lejos lo mejor

  • I wish I could go back to the 60s and snatch up Michelle Phillips from those corny white boys who couldnt give it 2 her right & id give her a reason to stop fuckin w/ them or the magic mushrooms & acid she was wasted off of

  • dancin in the tub? Why? Why not? I am always dreamin in the tub:)))

  • everybody got their pills already

  • I'm a boomer form way back. We all need to realize we're just a blip in time. Just watch a Jeopardy Teen tournament where the brightest don't have a clue what went on then. I know it will burst your bubble, but hey that's history.

  • @Martyc176 That's sad. When I was a teenager (I'm a 29 now) I knew more about history than the so-called brightest who came on Jeopardy then, and now. It's not that history is meant to be forgotten, it's that people are ignorant.

  • is this really live?

    fucking doubt it

  • leftists are simply people ignorant of economics

  • Ahhhh........ A time before Auto-Tune ... when singers actually had to be able to sing.

  • These Americans are better than us 2010 Americans:/

  • it is so sad to see how people lack in talent these days. why can artists create music like this anymore?

  • @msclassicrock1969 because today media got more interest on how "artist" looks instead of how they sound. i suggest you invest sometime looking for good music in myspace, you will amazing that there's a lot of talent in an indie label.

  • @msclassicrock1969 Because artists who make good music now aren't even recognized. Talentless sells now for some reason and the people with talent now are left in the dark.

  • @madahpesojnothgual , i know man. i live in nashville and see so much unrecognized talent everyday. these people deserve more than a gig at a local bar. they are born with talent, not brought up to think they have it.

  • @msclassicrock1969 , NO SOUL MAN< NO-ONE HAS ANY SOUL ANYMORE, WE'RE ALL PUSSIES NOW!! Follow the establishment type society, not willing to push for FREEDOM or PEACE!!

  • @msclassicrock1969 - The talent hasn't degraded, it's changed... do you actually want to hear 2010 music that sounds like the '60's? The stars of today easily outperform the stars of yesteryear in many aspects. You name any star performing act from the '60's and i'll easily triple the competition put forth by todays acts. I'm not a youngster either, but I am a DJ and i'm paid to know what makes people move.

  • @msclassicrock1969 There's plenty of new bands that are making music that's incredible. Check out Mumford and Sons, Givers or Beach House. If you expect radio to find the great bands for you, then that explains your problem. Pop/rock Radio exists for one reason: to young men listening long enough to get to the next beer commercial. There's always been lots of crap on the radio. Classic Rock only plays a tiny sliver of what was once played on Pop/Rock stations.

  • @msclassicrock1969 i wonder that everyday?!? music these day's just strait up suck's!!!

  • @msclassicrock1969 LSD helped!

  • @Dave897456 ...and DRUGS today don't help bands? LOL :)

  • @msclassicrock1969 Hi,I have seen comments like yours on so many music videos from way back when, have to I agree with them, Compared to past talent today's has very little to offer

  • @msclassicrock1969 I agree.everything is the copy of something nowadays and it all sounds robot like. Can't stand it.

  • @msclassicrock1969 it's a very subjective thing. while something might not sound appealing to the ear, there is talent involved. you've obviously set your 60's benchmark, but you can always find modern music you like. if you look hard enough.

  • @muddwell yeah, i know there is still talent like this out there, it just doesn't get the recognition and respect that it deserves. i live in nashville and see many unbelievably talented people every day, but i know the chances of them becoming big are slim because the majority of people don't want to listen to what they put out, which are raw lyrics and beautiful music compositions, they want the popularized, computerized pop and hip-hop that anybody off the street can do.

  • Thank You So Much!! Bless You, Its People Like You That Keep Music Alive... Great Job... BRAVO!!! Peace and Love From .... California.. USA....

  • q feos eran xd

  • Like Dennis Hopper once said in a movie,"The 90's will make the 60's look like the 50's".

    great times,great people!

  • So "normal looking" people! Nowdays if you want to appear in TV or be a musician you have to be goodlooking and to have all the marketing layer behind

  • Back when music was good..

  • Been surfing through the sixties music.

    Feels so good.

Its one in the morning, guess I better go to bed.

Thank Youtube and aguz2211 for good music and good dreams.

  • By the way, Denny Dougherty (not sure of the spelling) had an amazing voice and was considered among the best singers of his - or any other - generation. His range was astounding. Again, for those who don't like the sixties, why the hell are you even here? You weren't even around in the sixties and as children, those of us who were consider you a bunch of little bores.

  • Will you brats and other degenerates please stop arguing here. If you didn't like the sixties, then fine (I doubt you were even on the planet at that point) but stop with the arguing, profanity, and all the other garbage you post. If you don't like the music then DON'T listen, but otherwise, shut the hell up! Your comments are a total waste of time and effort and don't belong here. These groups like the Mama's and the Papa's were classic and they ranked up there with the best of their era.

  • i lold at the dancers

  • @NitraicAcid

Oh yeah, who thought up that shit?

  • @SHMUJEW... if the sixties were all that bad and the fact that we like this music (and this song) and we are all leftist nazis... WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU WATCHINGTHE FUCKING VIDEO???

  • BULLSHIT THE SIXTIES WERE THE AGE OF SLOTH , ARROGANCE AND HATE .....SO QUIT BULLSHITTING YOU LEFTIST NAZI dummy

  • it would be cool to live in that era!! maybe i could spastic dance like the people in the bathtubs!! I'D BE THE GREATEST DANCER EVER!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! btw...i love this song!! its an unbelievably great song!!

  • Cool Vid, Thanks For posting.

  • Damals haben sich die ,,Stars,, ganz natürlich dargestellt...ob dün oder dick...mit ungeradem gebiss ..usw...es hat nur die musik gezählt..und das war und ist immer noch das wichtigste !!!SUPER !

  • These guys are fucking incredible...

  • why are they dancing in bathtubs that is the question

  • @bojanks15 Becasue on the "California Dreaming" album cover - 3 of the Mamas and Pappas were sitting in a bathtub - and Michelle (the 4th) was laying across all of them!!!!!!! So a bathtub became sort of a monkier for the somg "California Dreaming"!!!! WAY TOO MANY drugs in those days!!!!!!!

  • Great video until the bath tub dancers come in. I wonder whose dumb idea that was???

  • @nofortunatesonII - The "California Dreaming" album cover - 3 of the Mamas and Pappas were sitting in a bathtub - and Michelle (the 4th) was laying across all of them!!!!!!! So a bathtub became sort of a monkier for the somg "California Dreaming"!!!! Prolly some record exec's idea!!! WAY TOO MANY drugs in those days!!!!!!!

  • 3 of the 4 are dead.... a good reason to stay away from booze, drugs and ham sandwiches!

  • This isnt LIVE live

  • classic.

  • Music great... their liberal attitudes suck and now we have entered the age of obama.

How ya lovin that changy thing.

  • ขอบคุณมากๆๆ ครับ

  • 60s dancer womans... soooo sexy

  • BAM outta nowhere, women in tubs jerking around.

  • cue the random bath-tub dancers!! Love the song tho!

  • Great group..If they ditched ol' Pork Chops in the beginning they could have been really famous. Oh well

  • I just realized that one Bathtub Guy is the guy who played Ho-Jong on M*A*S*H.

  • Get down with your funky self in the bathtub! One of my favorite songs.

  • The go-go girlz doin the jerk... Ummm, standing in the tubz?

  • is this really live? or lipsynched?

  • I can't look at John Phillips anymore that creep

  • 1:46 When Michelle starts imitating the dancers in the bathtubs and Cass laughs, LOL.

  • @Minnexyz I caught that too! Hilarious :)

  • Yes yes yes.I love them.Its a time and a culture.They are living forever.

  • I dont now f you can ca this ve relly, The gutiar isnt plugged in,, Mics arent. But then TV studios are never live, just trying to make it look like it.

  • The dancer with the long hair lookslike Sharon Tate...spooky.

  • All the times I've heard the songs and I never once envisioned bathtubs. What's wrong with me?

  • I love how all the Girls dance, in the tube ...but that guy is just GAY...LOL

  • That dance is called "The Jerk"

  • @DMZweber I swear that looks like Goldie Hawn, like she was a go go dancer on "Laugh In", too.

  • the 2 guys look like doug benson and geraldo rivera. one could also look like bill engvall

  • What the dance moves? They look cool...Anyone knows the names?

  • i love the surpsise dancing bath girls. rofl

  • @deathmetalbitch666 Must have been a bit surreal lying in a bath for the first half of the song!

  • "The tall girl" is Michelle Philips.

  • @stankoop Yes, that's her, Michelle Philips, the mother-in-law of William Baldwin. She's the only one who is still alive.

  • yo you got to be blitz to watch this hahaha

  • the tall girl should have been on VOGUE. supermodel much

  • TUB DANCERS !!!!! lol

  • I LOVE that Denny, during the interlude, walks away to look at the dacers more closley. I laughed so hard. I love him so much!

  • This is so cool.

I actually remember watching this VERY show at the time it was aired!

I musta been about 8 and thought they were so HIP!

    Thank you for this memory...

    most grateful

  • denny was a great singer....this is one of the best songs ever written...and the arrangements and the recording is one of the best ever....great production...using the wrecking crew band as well...

and they tell me today in todays newspaper that rapper lil' wayne is..and i quote "a brilliant musician and artist"...oy!!

  • Great song, great times

  • i love listening to this song when im blown.

  • role one up. put this song on repeat.. so wonderful.

  • simon cowell has killed everything. =-\

  • I think it's a reflection of our whole culture, Gyphia. Many of us in that era had grand dreams; many a song offered hopes of peace, harmony, a new way of life - an Age of Aquarius optimism. Now, we have passed through the Age of Cheney, emerging into something like an Age of the Greedy and Short-sighted. Our contemporary music reflects the outcome - either cookie-cutter vapid or angry and dangerous-sounding. I ache for things to turn again.

  • @Tigerpaws9097826 Oh blow me.

  • @Tigerpaws9097826 I understand what you are saying BUT you need to look around. There is a great music out there. Folk music is still alive and well. Is this folk, not sure it's close. I do not know where you live but NY public radio has some great music WFUV. you can get it on the internet but you do have to be a member. Take care ...............................

  • @atlcbox1 Thanks for the advice, Aticbox1. While the Mamas and the Papas bordered on folk and rock I think, I do have a love for folk music, and you're correct - it's still being played, and just has to be sought out.

  • @Tigerpaws9097826 I read your comments and understand what you mean. I'm 58, so I was in high school/college during the late 60's and early 70's. We had hopes and dreams to change the world. Although I too often think about what a privilege it was to be a kid at that time, I also know how important it is that we continue the message of the 60;s today. Treating others the way we would most want to be treated, providing service and help to those who need it, and tolerance for differences.

  • @craigaa52 I'd like to see the brighter points of the 60's culture still talked about and sung about too. The virtues and hopes you gave voice to here are why I once in awhile contemplate Buddhism. Though I am not a Buddhist, I still admire the vision common among many of them of an enlightened society that will emerge, however many moments or eons it may take. Thanks for the response.

  • @Tigerpaws9097826

Of course, the Age of Aquarius stuff was all part of the plan.

First you have to preach unlimited freedom, no boundaries, etc in order to destroy the old order, it's traditions, values, morals, etc. Then when it's collapsed you can institute something far more tyrannical. Things didn't go wrong at some point. On the contrary, everything went entirely according to plan.

  • Go-go dancers emerging from bathtubs -- now, that's something you don't see every day! P.S. (Love the vid; gave it a 5! Thanks for putting it up!)

  • I love how Mama Cass and Michell dance... so simple, but so cool. :)

  • Ah, what wonderful memories these videos conjure up. A time of innocence and pure fun. Life had such a slow pace back then.

  • a classic indeed! and i LOVE those crazy dancers =D

  • Wow! The blond dancer in the back tub on the right is a dead wringer for my high school prom date... 1966!

  • I remember Hullabaloo back in the 60's. The stuff was really cool for us kids. I thank God for the hippies and pop culture.

  • Mama Cass was from DC

  • Are the chicks that jump out of the tubs on Cialis?!!

  • The dancers were crazy no offence

but i still like this song ! <3

  • I agree. 60's sounds and feelings are forever-the best.

  • I remember watching this show back in the 60's....on a black and white TV. We wouldn't miss this or Shindig or Where The Action Is, for anything. What a great time the 60's were.

  • Those were the best of times, there will never be another decade like the 60's sunday nights Ed Sullivan, Saturdays the Hollywood palace.

  • I cannot agree with you more! there will never be another decade like the 60's. So much went on yet there was something in the air, peace and open spaces! Kids played as kids and stayed as kids for a long long time!

  • @Aloofbear I totally agree with you guys. The 60s and 70s can never be recaptured again. Being a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s were great. We had to make our own fun. Hide and seek, Kickball, Batmitten etc.. No video games or computers. I'm not knocking them, I love YouTube. Lol. But we had to use our imaginations and that was PRICELESS. Thanks for posting.

  • @Aloofbear not compared to the 1930s they didn;t. Each generation looks back to halcyon days. Enjoy and appreciate the present

  • @Aloofbear The 60's was great because the deaths in Vietnam were so far away and there was no Google. Get real man. Nothing changes.

  • Bocachita, There was also Shebang and Soul Train. A kid from my school won the dance contest dancing with her brother on one of those shows. Yes, here never was or will be a time like the 60's.
