Look how these cheap miserable junks try to manipulate people. Why the Volvo is without engine!????? I don't know who pays for this vomit, but I will send this to volvo!!!
People can't you get it! on the the road you can't choose what car you are going to have an accident with! this just to change the stereotype that says the old cars is better in safety , it's just not that simple :)
I would like to see a headon collision with two volvos of the same sort. its ridiculus to compare whit new shitty cars. 940 vs 940 nothing would happened.
The engine of this Volvo weighs approximately twice the weight of the renault's tiny ridiculous engine. The important difference is in the engine layout. If you drive such turbobrick (as I do), hitting things in full-frontal-center-against-center does the trick. I would love to see this test done that way ;) Just to see if there is at least ANYTHING left of the dwarf wannabe car(t).
@ylegend5 can't you just accept the fact that it isn't a tank?? Yes, it was probably a very safe car compared to the competition in 1990, but compared with today's standards it's not a safe and strong car
To all you guys who say "baaah but the Volvo was old!"
YES, it was OLD! But that was the point of this test: NEW small car VS OLD big car. It has nothing to do with the brands, it was only to show the progress of safety measures, doh!
its not about size its about the weight and speed of the car. in this case, since both car traveling at the same speed. now the important factor we car about is the weight of the car.
the volvo has a longitudinal positioned engine, unlike the modus and newer cars, so it's normal for it to crumple a more since the engine is pushed away rather than taking the impact. if the crash was head on the results would have been better for the 940.
makes people believe they are safer in a modern car than they realy are it all depends on the circumstances of the crash, people have had major accidents in older cars and walked away and some havent be so lucky same with modern cars.
The Volvo's nose was engineered to crumple, it's used to absorb the energy of a crash. I'm surprised that the 940 didn't have an airbag, as my 1992 940, the 2nd year it was made, does have an airbag, and my 1991 740 did as well. Don't trust fifth gear, they skew their results to fit their agenda. In "Volvo vs BMW" they, falsely, claimed that nobody could have survived such a crash. I'm living proof that crashes worse than that one ware survivable in a Volvo.
@aether020685 The volvos nose is indeed ment to crumple. But as a whole, not just one side as happened here. Roughly speaking the more area/volume the energy transmits through the better. The volvo localised the energy into a small point essentially just infront of the driver!
This was an awesome tests and there are NO reasons to believe it is "skewed" at all. For entertainment purposes there is no advantage in having the new car win over the old. Either result would have been interesting.
@aether020685 I suspect you have an emotional attachment to the Volvo brand after your crash. This is understandable but it wont do anyone any favours for you to tell others to "not trust fifth gear". The fact that you survived a crash doesn't make you a crash expert. Thats why your opinion regarding Volvo vs BMW is worth very little compared to the experts on the program.
Its OK to have the Volvo loose. Just accept it. Volvos do have a great reputation but 20 years of progress are just that.
@IKNOWALLABOUTALL The "experts" to whom you are referring are the same ones who snickered at a Volvo because it's engine had sub-ducted. I may not be an "expert" but I grew up in a Volvo dealership. I know a great deal more about these cars than a television personality. He's giving his opinion based on what he sees. By the way. Notice that he says that the Modus's nose kept its shape. That's a disadvantage you want the nose, even just half of it, to crumple. The crumple effect absorbs impact.
The excellent euroncap 5 star renault modus(and it's just as safe spaciously bigger brother the grand modus) is the one to go for if you value your family's safety over style and substance which the volvo has. True,in its day the 740 was good but things have massively moved enormously and it just isnt good enough to do little in way of car crash safety these days.
btw- any car can win one of these tests by having a ridiculusly strong steel skeleton, but this just crushes the person in the other car, and is the lazy way out of building in proper crumble zones.
I find it hard to believe a professional tv presenter would misrepresent these cars so badly... obviously biased.
@Benjimindle I totally agree. The reason the Volvo's damage was so extensive is because of how safe the Renault is for it's own occupants, not because of its own "lack" of safety. This is seriously a point to consider when designing cars are they being made "too" safe that its more danagerous for people that drive older cars? A large proportion of people drive old cars becuase it's all they can afford.
stupid boys......even if that volvo is old doesen't mean its so unsafe.its a commercial to bring renault in front.the most safest brand and its taken by renault....that volvo was choped underneath.....his deformation is too bad.....and i agree with the tehnological progres but not in that way
@Sylw3g yeah, BUT now new volvo's... still have their Head Office in Göteborg(Gothenburg) and will still make all their research and development there so..... yea....
@hnd4me my volvo 740 GL 1988, 42,000 miles, heated seats, aircon, electric windows, airbag, electric mirrors/heated mirrors, traction control ABS brakes fuel injection 4 WHEEL Disc brakes all round (modus has rear drums).....a front impact occurs 5 foot away from drivers and passengers seats with a long bonnett...i prefer an older volvo than french plastic crap.
this is not a question of "go this" or "go that" brand, but a question of technological progress since the modus hase been realesed almost 20 years after the Volvo : what about a test between such Volvo and the first Clio, or a Super5 ? ;-)
